ABC sends romance into sci-fi orbit, and it goes where no show has gone before.

Many noble professions get the television treatment; it's impossible to flip through the channels without finding shows about cops, lawyers, doctors, firemen, and even guys who make cakes. So why not astronauts?

That's exactly what ABC is doing with Defying Gravity, a new drama that premieres Sunday. Here's the gist: The show takes place in the future, circa 2050. Eight astronauts are manning a six-year space mission to explore planets in the galaxy. (Conveniently, there are four males and four females -- check that -- four HOT females.) And along the way, they struggle with interpersonal relationships and eerie space happenings. (...)

First what me thinks: Virtuality by ABC.
Will it be good?

Re: Defying Gravity

Strange name as they are not defying anything, they just don't have any.!
Virtuality looked promising, we'll have to see how this goes.

okay, so far...

Re: Defying Gravity

They have this superb spaceship and the grapple hook for the suits has to be manually drawn back?

I like some aspects of the show but don't know if it will make it to my watchlist. But it can get potential but it feels
like they are going for the Apollo 13 movies drama and I dont know if that will suit this show.

Re: Defying Gravity

I liked this. Wizard mentioned Virtuality. The cameras in Virtuality resembled HAL in 2001 - and, I'm getting a slight Kubrickish feeling from this as well. The unidentified presence that is "choosing" the team members - whatever it is... is a bit dark and mysterious, and to me, a bit similar to HAL.

Looks like this could be a good show, unless I've magically managed to (once again) skip the post above saying that it's already cancelled - I will be watching this one. I also think it looked far more promising than Virtuality. It had some parts that were similar - the streaming of confessionals and that stuff, but that didn't seem to be by far as important to the concept of the show here compared to in Virtuality. I really hate reality shows with a vengeance, so to me that's a good thing.

Re: Defying Gravity

Ron Linvingston is the man and ABC is doing quite an excellent job on this show... a lot better then expected.

this show is Poncherello Approved smile

Re: Defying Gravity

So.... what the fuck is Beta?

Re: Defying Gravity

I was thinking either a HAL-like "creature" somewhere - or something like the monolith of 2001. Who knows. Intriguing concept, though. Mystifistisk!

(edit)
Perhaps in a few episodes Beta will go on to be RC1?

...and we're out of beta, we're releasing on time... lalala...

The cake is a lie!

(edit2)

Also - the name of the show sounds like a bra commercial...

Re: Defying Gravity

first ep was interesting, i also would like it a bit more if they went in sci fi direction but not too much as this doesnt need to be another star trek/stargate show

Re: Defying Gravity

Actually quite a few fairly well known names. Ron Livingston- Office Space, Band of Brothers, Sex in the City..Andrew Airlie -Reaper, 4400..Laura Harris - Dead Like Me, 24..Christina Cox - Earth-Final Conflict, Blood Ties, guest spots on both Stargates ..  Most of the rest of the crew have been in episodes of Smallville, Stargate , Eureka and some soap operas, but I don't recognize them.

You're right. ABC has spent a little cash on the show, but it's actually a good play. Not much out there in the way of SciFi these days. Pretty sure they're banking on a good cross section of viewing audience, so I'm guessing romantic drama/scifi/story arc. I'm gonna give it a shot. First episode was ok.
