Topic: Black Summer
Black Summer is a white-knuckle horror-drama set at the beginning of a zombie outbreak. The story follows a group of disparate and desperate characters struggling to come to grips with the reality of their situation, while also struggling to survive their increasingly violent circumstances, as society and the rule of law crumbles around them in real time. Check it out here Those that have already seen Black Summer say it's by far one of the most original takes on zombie fiction since 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead —which is perfectly fine by me— and since the season is only eight episodes, it feels longer than it needs to be, but still doesn’t feel like its overstaying its welcome. In short, it's a small-screen exercise that's rooted in looking at what a potential zombie apocalypse would actually look like for civilians during those first panic-filled weeks. There are few acts of valiant heroism and just a whole lot of desperation, jump scares and brutal deaths. I was going to put this on hold until I finished up a few shows currently on my plate, but after reading some more into Black Summer, I think I'm going to bump it up in my queue and give it a spin some time over the weekend. Re: Black Summer
Just finished E01 - interesting setup, just one minor goof, good acting. Curious to see how it'll develop from there!

Watched E02:
▼Spoiler More progress at a nice pace, but why does it feel like their budget limited them to a restricted neighborhood? More driving in circles than what seemed logical. And why having an actress that virtually speaks no English? Didn't add anything so far IMHO.
Curious how the show will go on.

Re: Black Summer
Well wait until you get to the 4th episode; definitely was the most hilarious out of the eight for me. I like Black Summer for the fact that its all about survival and not much else, nothing is ever what it seems, and no one is ever as important as you may think. Jaime King is the most notable name in the show, but it's difficult to pinpoint her as the star. It's an interesting approach to taking the world falling apart at face value. As for the zombies themselves, they're a menace that is omnipresent, deadly, and aggressive. Even a lone zombie can be more than a handful. Almost reminds me of the ones portrayed in World War Z —aggressive PoV—, [REC], and Dawn of the Dead (2004) to name a few. At times Black Summer almost feels like a war movie. It's bare bones and brutal, no-frills zombie carnage impressively executed IMO. I'm curious to see peoples reactions about the way it all ended though. ▼Spoiler I read somewhere that they wanted to add another layer of terror being in an apocalyptic zombie situation and not being able to communicate with others, as with Sun only speaking Korean. They also showed it in a similar-but-different manner with Ryan (Mustafa Alabssi), a hearing-impaired character; didn't really "add another layer of terror" for me tbh. The part that got me scratching my head at times is that most of the characters in the show don't seem to understand the concept of closing/locking doors behind them while being chased by ravenous zombies!?!

Re: Black Summer
this show was really good, alot better than z nation, no clumsy jokes and so on, first eps were a bit slow kinda but very entertaing show, i like the fast zombies and how its hard to kill em. and no unnecessary dialogue and drama like in the walking dead. edit. ▼Spoiler I also kept wonderinng why they didn't close the fuckin doors behind them this so deserves 5/7

Comment from Stephen King @StephenKing
BLACK SUMMER (Netflix): Just when you think there's no more scare left in zombies, THIS comes along. Existential hell in the suburbs, stripped to the bone. No long, fraught discussions. No endless flashbacks, because there's no back story. No grouchy teens. Dialogue is spare. Much shot with a single handheld camera, very fluid. Showrunners could learn a lot from this. If they could work, that is.

Hahaha... after finding and posting that quote, I started to watch E04... and when the actor is in the public library, sitting down next to the books, most of the few books visible are from... Stephen King!

Re: Black Summer
Ok ending. I feel like the whole series should have had a budget at least 20% bigger. I'd watch S02. ▼Spoiler Was there a logical reason for so many survivors coming out of hiding at the same moment? Or were they just all trying to get to the stadium for the planned evacuation? And really weird: for 7 episodes it looked like there were hardly any weapons around, and then, in the last episode, it suddenly looks like everyone is armed. Remember to rate the show @ https://next-episode.net/black-summer and https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8923854/ !

Re: Black Summer
Watched 2x1. DAMN! One of the most-intense season starts ever! Later on there's more, intense, "being in the middle of things" action. Well done! Also, the non-linear narrative style is pretty unique. The show is more ruthless than any other show (that I can recall right now) when it comes to introducing new characters and then killing them off quickly. Anyone else watching this? P.S.: That guy in the tree looked soooo familiar... where did I see him before?

Re: Black Summer
Watched all season, it was quite good, not counting that one moment they are capable to do perfect headshots and the next moment manage to miss from 10 metres

Currently watching 2x4. Damn, season 2 is so good! ▼Spoiler While watching 2x3 I thought "Ah, so they rented this nice big house overlooking the valley to shoot a few scenes... taking good care of it." How wrong I was!

Re: Black Summer
While I like Black Summer, the one thing I find infuriating is that all they seem to do is to kill each other and therefore create more zombies. How stupid are these poeple? Surely the whole idea would be to kill as few as people as possible?

Wellllll... it's not "all they seem to do"... I also wondered why they don't 'destroy' more zombies, like they did in The Walking Dead. But then in that show it's almost a peaceful activity. Here, with the instant-human-to-zombie changes, it's way more intense - maybe that leads to stupid decisions. The whole world seems to be more hostile here. Anyway, great show, probably the most gripping of 2021 so far!

The way they intercut and go back and forth in the timeline will leave you lost in a daze if you're not paying attention. The action and carnage is indeed relentless, and I would say it's fairly accurate in a society dependent on an every man for himself state of mind just for sheer survival. Don't sleep! lighton wrote:P.S.: That guy in the tree looked soooo familiar... where did I see him before?
Fantastic Four? Fringe?

Hehe... I did pay attention, and still this is one out of maybe 2 or 3 shows EVER where I had another peak into episodes I already watched to make sure I caught every connection. Soooo many people! This must be the worst show for people with prosopagnosia (aka face blindness). scorpius074 wrote:lighton wrote:P.S.: That guy in the tree looked soooo familiar... where did I see him before?

Too much time has passed, I don't really remember... but you seem to know who it is, so please share!

Re: Black Summer
I remembered seeing him in Fringe and in Supernatural. I did a quick IMDb search to help stimulate the noggin because I also remembered him in something else but couldn't call it. That's when I saw he was credited in Fantastic Four (2005). I had made every effort to wipe any memories of that movie from my mind. Oops...

Re: Black Summer
Having finished season 2 of Black Summer, I thought I'd watch Z Nation as I haven't seen that before. Not sure how, it just seemed to have hidden itself from me. But seeing as it's a kind of prequel, I had high hopes for it. Oh dear, what a let down. Totally different vibe, like some piss-poor SyFy channel TV show, which is exactly what it is, I know. But Black Summer is sooo much better. I hope it improves, but Black Summer was great from the start.
2020. Meh.
