Ya I'm so in.  Great season opener.  I went from not all that interested for the first 30 minutes because I don't really care about the Penguin's backstory, but by the end I was hooked.  Very smart writing.  Colin Farrell at his best, after this ends he might end up being known for this role.

Yes! Enjoyed almost all of 1x1, just the car chase felt a bit too fake for my taste.

Re: The Penguin

I loved it. A gritty, modern take as opposed to a silly, "comic book" costume thing. I was a little bummed at the last name change (shorten) but I guess I get it after reading their reasons.

Looking forward to continuing.

Re: The Penguin

Needed some time to get into it but second half of the first episode, I was sold! If they continue this way, it will be awesome!

Re: The Penguin

Agreed... After expecting capes and powers, halfway through the first episode I re-realized this was an HBO show, appreciated the quality of the sets, acting.... everything... And was able to really enjoy the rest of it as the high end show it was.

I always go into a new HBO series with very high hopes/expectations...This one is living up to them so far.

Excellent first Ep... I hope they can keep it up.

Re: The Penguin

After so many good reviews here, decided to give this one a shot as well. Never bothered much with The Penguin as a DC villain, but damn this is one hell of an adaption.

The most interesting thing is how real they make it feel. Gotham as a City usually felt pretty unrealistic in most on-screen adaptions, but here it looks like it could really exist.

For the first ~10 mins I couldn't have told that it was Collin Farrell without knowing it. Then his gestures became more and more familiar. Amazing performance - equals Heath Ledger as the Joker.
Same goes for Cristin Milioti. Only seen her in comedies so far so wasn't sure at first but she really pulls off th role.

Could not agree more about the car chase. I actually watched the scene twices just to make sure the CGI was actually as bad as I thought. Felt just wrong.

Shows that deserved more runtime:
Abbys | Dead Like Me | Devs | Firefly | Gangsta. | Jack of all Trades | Kevin (probably) saves the World | Lodge 49 | Mrs. Davis | NYC 22 | Powerless | Roadkill | Special Unit 2 | Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi | Stumptown | Surface | The Brave | The Company You Keep | The Crazy Ones | The Finder | The Middleman | Truth Seekers | Two Weeks to Live | Whiskey Cavalier

Yes! Cheaper shows often don't (can't?) get this right, but this one does... Reminds me of https://next-episode.net/the-deuce - they also made the city feel very authentic/ they aged everything properly.

I really wonder how a show with a budget like this can get it so wrong...

Probably went all towards the make-up department for Colin Farrell's transformation smile.

Re: The Penguin

Episode 2 keeps the show going strong.

As good as Colin Farrell is playing his role, I think Cristin Milioti matches him evenly.
It's more subtle but her expressions alone are so impactful.

I don't think we will be seeing a superhero appear in this show, which will be absolutely OK.
But I do wanna see at least some easter eggs or a reporter on the tv mentioning Batman or something.

Spoiler

That line from his mother "If my son is a nothing, what am i?" - damn that must hurt. Y
ou can't even be angry about something like that with a person who has dimentia.

While I think she's good, he's next level.  Or maybe even a few levels above that.  His performance is superb, it really is.

2020.  Meh.

Re: The Penguin

I liked 1x2 a little bit less than 1x1, but the suspense was engineered very nicely!
