Topic: Why Do You Like Doctor Who?
I was looking for discussion that the episode this happened in but since it seems to be a little bit before the first episode discussion happened I figure I would create a new one to talk about it, and the general theme behind it. The purpose of this post was because I'm re-watching The Girl in the Fireplace, and am at one of the first scenes of the show that really made me love it. It's the part were The Doctor first arrives threw the fireplace to the little girl and notices a broken clock and his immediately alarmed because of the ticking in the room. Another scene that comes to mind is when he knows what's wrong with Rose in the first episode of season 2, and largely the scene in the Silence in the Library when he knows the Vastha Nerada have taken over the one explorer based on them only having one shadow. What I like about this show is The Doctor is actually smart and clever and does clever things at a moments notice. I enjoy tv programs were the characters are bright and intelligent and aren't easily fooled or there not displayed as being dumb and easily fooled. TV shows like this, Luther (the first encounter of Luther and Alice in the integration room sold me on that show), and Sherlock (greatest detective every created) is what makes television fun for me. So what is it about this show that you find enjoyable?

Re: Why Do You Like Doctor Who?
I've been a fan ever since I was a little boy and got into it right at the end of the Jon Pertwee era. My favourite Doctor has to be Tom Baker. But what do I like about it? It's a very British take on sci-fi, that's a plus for me, but I think it's the little touches that make it so special. Even down to the sound of the TARDIS taking off/landing. I like the way the Doctor is a very private person, you know there's a lot going on in his head and a lot of stuff in his past that we'll never know about. There's so much history to the show, so much background, it feels like some enormous multi-layered thing that I'll never fully understand. He's also very ballsy and eccentric, he often does crazy things for no apparent reason, just because he fancies it. He's just not your typical hero. Oh, plus there's often hot women in it.
2020. Meh.

Re: Why Do You Like Doctor Who?
Rwings, you pretty much summed it up - and also name-checked most of Steven Moffat's episodes. I enjoy the quirkiness of the show and the fact that it is completely different than any other sci-fi I know. And the Moffat episodes (The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in the Fireplace, Blink, The Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead) were always a highlight for me for the same reason you said - smart characters acting intelligently, knowing or deducing something I could have, but didn't, etc. That terrific writing is something I look forward to each time and now that Moffat is the showrunner I am getting it in almost every episode (as opposed to two, maybe three episodes a season previously).

Re: Why Do You Like Doctor Who?
I didn't realize that Moffat was the writer of all those episodes that I enjoy of the show. He also the man behind the Sherlock series, so really I guess he became my favorite writer out there. I wish that there were more writers and shows out there that was written with clever people. The only reality show I enjoyed was The Mole and that was because it dealt people having to be smart.

Rwings, if you haven't yet, you should watch Jekyll (6 episode re-telling of Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde story, written completely by Moffat and starring the superb James Nesbitt) and Coupling (4 seasons of 6 episode half-hour comedy, also completely written by Steven Moffat). I am in awe of Moffat's writing skills, because no matter how far into the past I go, I always find that anything he's written is simply brilliant. Smart, funny and extremely entertaining.

I do have Jekyll in my list of shows to get to, I been putting it off since it only lasted Six episodes and don't like getting into shows that are cut off before there time, but I might check it out once I finish my re-watching of Doctor Who...up to season 3 I'm always on the hunt for new shows that are written like Luther, Sherlock, Doctor Who, and in some regard The Glades

Uhm, it wasn't cut off before it's time. It was always meant to be just a mini-series (or specifically half of a normal UK season). The show was finished the way it was conceived, nothing was cut off. Now I don't know if more seasons were planned - the ending isn't a cliffhanger, but it certainly is open to continuation - and the seasons just didn't get greenlit before of low ratings. But the first (and only) season is as full as you can hope for.

Well I was basing that on tv.com comments mainly when I was trying to figure out something to watch and it sounded like it was cancelled leaving stuff open

Yes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAw0NBF1nEo (This was the moment I fell in love with Doctor Who. The show had my mind ever since The Empty Child ("I sent it to it's room. This is it's room!"), but my heart belongs to it ever since The Girl in the Fireplace.)

Re: Why Do You Like Doctor Who?
DT really needs to be on tv again he's kind a wide range of acting ability. I wish there was one full episode were we got to see the Fury of a Timelord, he can really be the greatest villain if he wanted to. I really enjoy the episodes after Rose left simply because we see just what the doctor is capable of

Re: Why Do You Like Doctor Who?
Sally Sparrow the best written female character on tv sadly she's only in the one episode. The character wasn't whiny and was very clever with a cute face. Needless to say I just re-watched Blink and that episode was truly amazing and was of course written by Moffat

Re: Why Do You Like Doctor Who?
I am not a total fan of Dr. Who but what i do like about it is that there are no limits of the possible storylines. Its not only "scifi" or "timetravel" or "fantasy" or "stuck in one place" it is all genres at once which makes imagination the only limit. I like that. In no other show you can travel anywhere, "anywhen" (?) and meet both werewolves and robots at the same time. Thats fun. Sure, they usually try to explain the fantasy-themes with some sci-fi-techie background but it still is fantasy while watching.
