Re: Shameless (US)Newest episode was good but kind of a let down after such a great episode last week Re: Shameless (US)Rwings wrote:
I agree, the resolution was nice, but nowhere near as poignant as the end of the episode before. Don't know if it's because this episode was adapted from the UK original or simply because questions and unresolved issues are inherently more interesting than resolutions. Still a good episode and it makes sense to do away with Monica and the issues she brings so the show can concentrate on Fiona finding out the truth about Steve/Jimmy now that we have only two episodes left. Thank god the show has been picked up for season 2. Re: Shameless (US)GodZionu wrote:
Not sure what is so funny. After all, your final argument was the show picturing underaged children in what is, in your opinion, immoral or unwanted acts. Clearly, you do not accept homosexuality and think you can protect underaged from drinking and smoking. And you use that as arguments for not liking this show, though you will be happy to watch Spartacus and other shows which depict gross immorality - somehow they don't seem to bother you. So what is the problem with this one? You think children does not take after grown-ups? really? Pretty sure you're Christian, based on your obvious problem with homosexuality. Just an assumption though. Assumptions being the mother of all mistakes, I'll leave it as just that. When it comes to lying, drinking and smoking; In most other tv-shows, grown-ups are lying. They're killing. Having sex. Smoking. Drinking. Doing drugs. This is ok though, right? Actually, most shows try to make smoking look cool, this one doesn't really. When it comes down to it, the only ones who can really influence children's perspective of that is right and what is wrong, is their parents and their environment, teachers, authority figures etc. They are the ones who teach the children what's right and what's wrong. They are the ones responsible of being present, behaving correctly in front of the kids, protecting them from whatever they don't want them to see, etc. The children will be exposed to sex, alcohol, drugs, theft, lies and violence either from their parents and/or from their environment. Pretending these elements doesn't exist in their real life environment is just naive. Pretending these are not elements of their world already is not possible, unless you're living in a bubble. It's not a matter of what you let the kids know exist, the real objective should be trying to impose on them how to react to such elements. Don't blame T.V, that is just a weak way to blame someone other than their authority figures and their environment for their behavior. Enough digression. To get back on track, I like the show. I'm at ep07 right now, and can't wait to watch the development. William H. Macy, one of my all-time favorite actors, is really the reason why I wanted to watch this, I haven't seen the UK version. However, I think the cast has got lots of talent in general. Re: Shameless (US)your text is way too long to read, but please do not comment about my morals. unfortunately you are too far from truth. one thing is to whine (like it do) what they show on tv, the other thing is my true morals. you are very far from truth my friend. I've never seen the British version so I didn't realize the episode was copying it. I did read up on some of the stuff of what the UK version is doing after I watched the pilot and I hope they don't follow it to much since I don't see how this show would work without Fiona. The show seems to thrive the most on chaos and conflict, I think that's when the writing and the acting are at the best which is why this episode faulted since I think it was the least angst episode of the season. What I did enjoy about the episode is that creepy clown guy looks to finally be gone from that one house. For all that crazy lady's faults one thing you can't fault her for his how much she cares for her daughter. It sucks there's only two episodes left this show is a breath of fresh air compared to what networks are airing most of the time. And after reading the episode description for the last two episodes it does seem like there writing towards the way the British show went in season 2, I just hope it's a misdirection for those who watch. I didn't see the UK version either, I just happened to notice the titles at the beginning said something along the lines of "Screenplay adapted from the UK original by ..." I didn't notice anything to that effect before, but I could have just missed it. Rwings wrote:
Dude, now you're scaring me! I'm not sure I want to read up on the plot lines of the UK original, but no Emmy Rossum would kill the show for me. Whose boobs would we look at then? Seriously though, the nudity is not why I watch, even though it is a nice bonus, and I like the rest of the cast a lot, but Emmy Rossum's Fiona is the heart of the show and I can't imagine the show without her ... Re: Shameless (US)Sorry I guess I should have wrote that with spoilers, but I have no idea how closely US is following UK, and I don't see it happening which is why I didn't. ▼Spoiler The rest of the sentence ▼Spoiler Re: Shameless (US)Rwings, thanks, I appreciate the Spoiler tags. Too bad that stupid "Show" button looks so damn appealing. But I managed to reveal just the first spoiler and could refrain from revealing the second. Phew Re: Shameless (US)Spyder23 wrote:

Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves. Re: Shameless (US)It was an interesting episode, I will have more to say on it if I rewatch it a second time or have more time to think on the episode. Sad to see the season finale is next week. Re: Shameless (US)I wasn't completely sure what the leverage Tom the cop had over Steve/Jimmy. I mean obviously he could take Steve/Jimmy down to the police station and arrest him for trying to steal the Porsche, but it was established that that isn't in Tommy's interest, because he would lose his shot with Fiona. So choice number one doesn't make much sense - what would motivate Steve/Jimmy to turn himself in? Why make it easy for Tommy? Tommy even said that when Steve/Jimmy would get out Tommy and Fiona would already be married. If the arrest was Tommy's leverage this choice doesn't make sense. The only alternative leverage I see is Tommy telling Fiona that Steve/Jimmy is a car thief. This might work from Tommy's perspective, because Tommy doesn't know that Fiona is quite aware of Steve/Jimmy's career. But even so Tommy tried telling Fiona that already and it didn't go well, so I'm not really seeing his upside there. Also I am unclear on whether it was Steve/Jimmy's doing that manipulated Tommy into arresting Lip and Ian, or whether that was pure happenstance. In any case it seems that Tommy has nothing to lose going into the finale (Fiona will already hate him for arresting her brothers) so things should get interesting. (As an aside, I really hope this was all part of Steve/Jimmy's plan to get rid of Tommy, because keeping a girlfriend who has a jealous cop that is in love with her is just asking for trouble and not really smart. As is not watching for tailing cars.) Re: Shameless (US)That part of the episode did in fact lose me. Steve was caught way to easily by the cop, and after beating Steve he had no play to arrest him so the two options he gave weren't really options since theirs no logical reason for Steve to take either of them. The cop just to me comes off as a crazy stalker person more so then someone I could actually see Fiona with, so I hope it's all part of some master plan for the finale since I don't really buy any of the stuff going on with the cop and Steve. Also the stuff with Karen in the episode was off for me, I liked her character up to this episode at which point it kind of threw me. I can see how it would make sense what she was doing, but I don't know something about it just felt kind of wrong. It makes sense in a realistic kind of way, but to me something was lost in how it was shown in the episode. Re: Shameless (US)I agree. I liked Karen and I don't mind her going down that path, but she did seem like a more balanced person. But then again, her character was set up to have these giant mood swings. She threatened to stab her Dad in one episode and in the next she completely changed her mind when he promised her the car. At that time I thought that her plan was to embarrass him at that Church thing, but her reaction has proven that she really did make a 180 degree turn ... The amateur psychiatrist in me says she's bi-polar. Re: Shameless (US)First reaction...didn't seem like a season finale to me I feel like there should be more, maybe I'm just bummed it's done for the year. Re: Shameless (US)For me it actually was like a season finale. Overall, a great great season, hope they will keep it up. Gonna check the UK version some time soon. 73 2011-03-29 02:39:52 (edited by marco1475 2011-03-29 02:42:37)Re: Shameless (US)It felt like a season finale, but it was very weird. Not resolving issues the show plans on picking up is fine, but it feels like they decided to forgo some key payoff elements. I am fine with them not resolving the Karen + her Dad + Frank + Lip issue. For starters it's a fucked up situation that really can't be resolved. I can't really see how having Karen deal with her Dad's (gruesome) suicide is going to provide for entertaining drama - she was going heavily off the rails for quite a few episodes now and I don't understand why the writers felt the need to dump even more on her, but so be it. I am certain this topic will be revisited in the second season. What I am not fine with is the complete and utter lack of payoff on the Steve/Jimmy storyline. I enjoyed Fiona's indecision, on the one hand I did not want her to go because even though she's in love with him, she doesn't know him (doesn't know the secret), and yet I wanted her to go at the same time because she deserves it. But for the past three or four episodes the writers have been setting up this epic confrontation when Fiona finds out about Steve's real name and family and they even upped the ante with Debbie spilling the beans to Steve's family and ... nothing. Not only did the big confrontation not happen, the episode's end even suggested that maybe Steve was a one-season character since he left the country. I understand that maybe he didn't really leave, he turned around before the boarded the plane, etc. and he will be back in the second season, so there will be potential future pay off. But from the perspective of this episode, of this season as a whole, of this finale, all that work has been for naught. All that drama, the build up, the storylines, were completely wasted time. And as much as I can appreciate going against the established rules of TV drama by doing something unexpected like this, I still feel that the finale simply didn't deliver. During most of the episode I didn't know where the story was going and that by itself is a plus. Yes, Shameless is a show like no other. But that also meant that nothing got resolved, nothing got revealed, and the storyline ended with people going their separate ways without knowing most of the relevant information, without any drama that we were promised. Is it realistic (as in does this happen in real life)? Yes. Is it fulfilling? Hell no! Re: Shameless (US)The reason it didn't feel like a season finale was because there was no resolution to the Jimmy storyline and with the back half of the season focusing on that it felt like more needed for this season. I guess if there going for a realistic way of story telling for the show it's something I will have to get used to with no payoff at the end of a season, I just don't know feel like something should have happened. Re: Shameless (US)I just saw the entire show and I LOVED it.
