Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

The earth has a different intergalactic address... So I presume that in Ida (Asgard galaxy), it is a different address again, or it might not be but (if I remember rightly from that episode where O'Neill goes to the Asgard homeworld) the gates in Ida are the same as the ones in the Milky Way, so it might be the same as the normal Milky Way Earth address, but with a different symbol.

So the Earth can be dialled from any galaxy with maybe a different address each time.

Regarding the Peagasus galaxy, Altantis gate (or the DHD at least) is the only gate in the Pegasus galaxy that can dial the Earth (or any Milky Way (maybe any other galaxy)) gate.

What I was just wondering was the intergalactic gate bridge between Pegasus and the Milky Way. From what I understand they moved the two closest gates in the Pegasus and Milky Way galaxy together. So you could dial (from any Pegasus gate) the Pegasus side gate, walk through it. Then you'd be in the "bridge bit". So somewhere there you'd basically walk between two galaxies, thn you could use the Milky Way gate to dial any other Milky Way gate.
But wouldn't the coordinates of either gate change when you moved them? How would you find the new coordinates of either gate? And would moving a Pegasus gate (maybe a few yards) past the galactic boundary stop it working, as it's now a Pegasus gate in the Milky Way?

Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

I don't think that the distance would matter if it's just a few yards. When trying to connect to another gate, it probably searches a large area and then connects to the main gate in this area... When dialing from the peagasus galaxy the peagasus gate would be the main gate and when dialing from milky way, that gate would be the main gate in the vicinity...
The bridge is after all, not located in either the milky way nor in the peagasus... it's located between the galaxies....

If they would move the gates further, some kind of modification would have to be made...

No, sorry, I didn't mean connecting to them when moved a few yards (although it would matter when uprooting them from there original location to using them in the 17 gate sequence). I meant is there a point between those two gates (in the void they are in) where one of the gates doesn't work. Or if this is not the case, do all stargates (no matter there galactic origin) work in the void between galaxies?

Aren't all gates pretty much the same? It shouldn't matter where the gate comes from... I mean, it's not the actual gate that your dialing for, but the place where it's located.

Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

That's the thing, not all gates are the same, I mean look at the Pegasus gates compared to the Milky Way ones... Most (if not all) the symbols are different, and there are less of them (and they (Pegasus gates) also cannot be manually dialled). Unless there is a way to translate one set of symbols into another (I don't see how there is, if there are different numbers), you cannot dial between gates of a different galaxy (well at least in the case of Pegasus and the Milky Way anyway) if they are put in the same network.
Obviously we already know you can dial between galaxies of different gate networks, they each have their own address.

Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

The Pegasus gates and Milky Way gates are not necessary in the same system in bridge sequence. There is a midway station used for quarantine halfway between the galaxies, so there are probably Pegasus gates on the side towards Pegasus galaxy and Milky Way gates on the other. That eliminates the problem with different symbols...

Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

Yeah, I know that... But no the gates are in the same place in the bridge, they are both in the void between the galaxies.
But how do they connect to their appropriate gate network if they are not in their appropriate galaxy? Or is it the case like I said that all gates connect to their original network in the "void". I've always thought that a gate work only work in it's network, and if you took it out of it's galaxy you would sever it's connection to it's network.

Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

Well they modified them to forward a "call" to the next gate in sequence, maybe they also modified the "targeting software". So the gate, instead of targeting at specific destination inside the "home" galaxy otherwise marked by first 6 symbols in gate address, are aiming at relative position towards the gate, say 50 light years (or something like that...) in desired direction (in our case somewhere on trajectory Pegasus - Milky Way). So if there are another gate at that position you have a lock! Now if each gate in line are following the same routine you have working bridge.

Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

I'm wondering why the gates in the 2 galaxies are so different in both looks and functionality. It seems the ancients gave the Pegasus galaxy the nice looking gates and gave the milky way the rubbish looking ones. Doesn't look like the Ancients liked the milky way very much.

I'm also wondering how long it would have taken to put all these gates where they are.

I'm also wondering why i'm wondering these things when I have other things i need to do.

Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

Now I'm totally bamboozel'd, but that was a darn good read tongue

@thatguy2001: the atlantis Gates are the newer model
they's just gotta look better, be slicker, faster more..........you know big_smile

daluwe - that must make me a semi-nerd ( to lazy to research it myself, but greatful someone else did the hardyard )

I sleep through most or all of these tongue

Re: Goof or am I misunderstanding?

So basically the Atlantis gates are like the Rolls Royce, it's slick, powerful and nice looking, while the milky way gates are more like the Volvo, it just works....:P
