Topic: Nine Free HD DVDs with Toshiba HD DVD Player at Best Buy
Upping the ante for high-disc bundles, Best Buy is offering a total of nine free HD DVD discs with purchase of Toshiba's new $399 HD-A3 player.
The new deal was first unveiled in Best Buy's weekly newspaper insert this past Sunday (click to view). It builds on the retailer's existing bundle deal, which provides a total of seven free HD DVDs with purchase of any 2nd-Gen Toshiba HD DVD Player.
As we've previously reported, the first five movies are available by mail from a selection of 15 titles, while the second two ('300' and 'The Bourne Identity') come in the HD-A3 box. The remaining two titles are being made available directly from Best Buy at the point of purchase (excluding TV DVD and box set releases).
"It’s a good start to a [HD DVD] collection," Best Buy spokesperson Brian Lucas told Home Media Magazine.
Lucas added that despite an ongoing lack of widespread consumer adoption, interest in high-definition packaged media remains constant at Best Buy, saying "we wouldn’t devote insert space every week to formats nobody is interested in."

Not a bad haul if you ask me and a great way to get your next-gen collection jump started for just the price of the player. Or you can save even more money by purchasing any other of the lower costing Toshiba HD DVD players from Best Buy and only getting seven free HD DVDs.
And don't forget, a similar deal is currently in affect for anyone looking to jump start a blu-ray collection.

So thats:
5 FREE blu-ray discs of your choice via Mail-In Rebate
5 FREE blu-ray discs (300 and The Bourne Identity) included in the box with the purchase of Panasonic's DMP-BD10A ($599.99) 1st Generation blu-ray player
FOR A TOTAL OF 10 BLU-RAY DISCS + PLAYER @ $600
If there is one thing that I can say that I do like about the fictional "format war" , is that it is really driving prices down on the technology fast. Despite have much faster adoption rate, it took the original DVDs the better part of a decade before prices started getting this low. HD DVD and blu-ray have only been out for less than two years, and we are already looking at HD DVD players which will cost less than $200 by this Christmas. It took regular DVDs from 1995 until 2000/2001 for prices to come down this far. It has taken HD DVD ~18 months to do the same thing - plus it's bound to be bundled with a ton of free discs.
Impressive.
