Topic: Philosophy Q
I was thinking a bit about Tamara (the chick in the game that can't die there). Let's say that you had the opportunity to live as an immortal in that kind if virtual world, and still interact with real people. You would be the only one that could not die from this world. However, you would die in real life, like Tamara did. Would you do it? Would you take the opportunity, and die? I'm thinking that there are upsides and downsides. Upsides: Immortality, which would lead to much power in that kind of a community, with anarchy. Exciting life Downsides: People will always die around you. There is a chance that people will stop using the virtual reality, which would mean boredom for you What are your thoughts?

I think that colonization of other planets is inevitable.. if we keep having sex.. In a few hundred years, there will just not be enough room here. I have a basic belief, that humanity will always survive... what ever happens, we will find a way to survive and evolve from it... But what the hell to I know?

uh agree and disagree at the same time .... their will be forever enough room for humans on earth just because we are humans and we love to kill each other in stupid wars.... i agree with you if we ever achive a united peaceful world.... witch we only achive if we got an enemy witch wants to destroy us all.... War is the normal evolution of humanity as sad as this is... if we don`t get some allienenemy mankind will never be united and never evolve to something better then we are now anyway.... like 6 said in BSG "a live without ending is meaningless" if i would stuck in a situation like tamara is i would try the same thing cylons did .... find some people who could clone some body and download my mind into one of them

Re: Philosophy Q
This is a tough one - but interesting Virtual Life: I actually don't think it's possible. What we see in Caprica is a extremely simplified version of "what-if". You simply can't create an original person out of data, like credit card receipts or any other digital trace you leave in the internet, you could create an extremely detailed profile at most but that has no thinking capacity. BUT if you could clone your (living) brain into a digital version this situation would change. But the brain is nothing without the continuous input from your senses combined with a biochemical cocktail of many hormones and other stuff they even haven't figured out completely. So if this virtual brain would be started the reference system would be completely different. ATM nobody could predict what would happen. My theory however is that you're stuck at that specific point in your life when it was cloned. Learning and interacting could be difficult or not possible at all. Never Ending Life: This question is as old as humanity. Life and the conciousness is a tricky thing. If you think back at your childhood you never would have asked yourself this question. You were immortal in the way that there is always a next day after today where it basically goes on as today. And if tomorrow is always as today you live forever. When you get slightly older as a teenager you realize that tomorrow is not always as today and someday you have to find a way to build your future. When you are later - maybe late twenties to late thirties - you have this future - maybe with a family and a job - and you thinking about retirering to enjoy the remaining of the ending life. When you are retired you are happy if you're healthy and the the life you had was good. At some point in the near or distant future it's totally ok for you to die because you had your life. So at which point do you want to enter the never ending life. Obviously you can't get any older phisically. Mentally your brain is also not an ever expanding hdd. After your brain reaches it's adult stage. The framework is fixed. It really forgets the most things and only keeps memories - which are far from data. So what would you become if your brain forgets your past slowly? The person of your last 50-80 years? You will certainly not be like a vampire who can remember the good years of 1543... No - I think humanity is not made for everlasting life - it needs to regenerate through death and birth. Extraterrestrial Life: While I believe there is alien life in the universe somewhere I also believe that it's almost impossible to find or even travel to it. BUT colonizing other planets is just a matter of money now. All the problems "where and how" are basically solved. The only and biggest problem is how to fund it. Because this is not a matter of a single country but humanity this will be far far in the future. Just keep in mind how long it took to create the ISS and how expensive this is. Terrestrial Life: I guess the most accurate description for human life was given by agent Smith in The Matrix. He described humanity not as an animal but as a virus. Humans tend to colonize new land much faster than any other animal and find a way to survive anywhere. Normal species get extincted if big events happen, but the humans tend to survive. And it doesn't matter if 'some' are killed during genocide, tsunami, earthquakes or even an atomic world war. There will be always enough survivers around to start all over again. sorry for the tl;dr

There is a HUGE difference between immortality and just living a really long time. I'm with you - I'm fascinated by what the future could bring, but true immortality... I think that could make a pretty good definition of hell. I mean really think about it - millions upon millions of years, never being able to die, constantly losing the people around you - eventually forgetting everybody you knew after a few thousand years. And while the universe is possibly infinite, eventually there would be very few new things to see and experience, and you'd be praying to die from the boredom.

Living in this way would not exactly be immortality... I mean, you could always destroy the computer(s). But yes, i understand that if you had true immortality, at some point, you would probably be pretty damn bored.. Has anyone of you seen The man from earth? It's about a man that has lived for 10000 years, and he tells his story.

what do you base this on? true, the human population is increasing, but the increase is at the same time decelerating. the reason for the increase of the latest 50 years is not because we're procreating like rabbits, it's because we've stopped dying like flies. i could go on, but.. this is better: http://www.ted.com/talks/hans_rosling_s … _seen.html (if statistics make you yawn, check out the animation at 4:00 )

10 000 years is nothing. i'm atm 435 years old and i like it so far. i'd say if you would have lived 1 billion years only on earth then it would have been boring.

I'm basing it on the opening scene in the movie "Pandorum" where they say: "year 2153, world population 24,6 billion" I suspect that the number will keep rising.

Pandorum was a nice movie, but i seriously think there will soon be war and a huge one when population will continue growing as it is doing. Asia and Africa will double their population in next 30-50 years. and even now they are very short in food and fresh water.

Re: Philosophy Q
I would die to live in the virtual world without a doubt. As long as I get to decide when. The whole concept reminds me of a star trek transporter. It always seemed to me that using the transporter was like dieing by disintegration, but with a perfect copy emerging at the new location. The copy thinks it's you and seems like you to everyone else. Only the original would know the difference and it's been disintegrated.
