Topic: 1x04
This ep was rather slow but strong on the character building. The series will focus on family drama more than I expected. I also have problems with the time set. Despite the fancy electronic paper they still have CRTs. The cars look more like in the 50's and the racial reference more from the 80's. Did you also notice the BSG original theme that played during the radio zapping

I don't know, I kind of like the anachronisms. Just like the religions, everything past and future is mixed and changed. You get the feeling that civilization has cycled a few times to get where they are, and that feels real. Not to mention that some of our richest sci-fi comes from the 50s and 60s and this feels like a link to it. I guess my only problem is that Joe Adama seems to be on some sort of journey to the darkside and I don't think it is being told that well. Though I must say, I can't wait to meet Barnaby(James Marsters) I don't feel like he's had a great role since Spike and I am keeping my fingers crossed for this one. We'll see.

The "original" BSG theme from the 70's is the "Colonial Anthem" of the new BSG-series. However, should they have an anthem yet, if the colonies don't get united until 6 years after the Maglev Bombing and the creation of the first Cylon? I dunno, maybe there's a colonial anthem regardless, like some sort of Colonial Unity anthem, that gets adopted as the Colonial "national" anthem, later? Or maybe they just had the song on the radio. But it did get played as the "colonial anthem" in the BSG mini-series, before Adama's speech.

It's slow paced, it's not at all space-placed so far, looks more like lots of references to our cultural and historical past, all mixed from our different periods, like infotropic said, it gives the feel of reality, a little bit like in Dark City. And BB, you've forgot our modern day cellphones! And it introduces that hi-tech equipment in much more natural way than in many other futuristic shows, it plays well, just like in Classic Star Wars Trilogy, Farscape, FireFly or Babylon 5.

Oh I didn't forget the modern things - there are many of them - I just find the mixture of new and old ones weird. As I said - the electronic paper and CRTs don't fit. And yes - it feels real - like every episode of the last 60 decades happen at once

Marvelous episode. Loved the talk-show scene, it's disgusting how the media act like vultures. And I also love the modern/50's mix, 'specially the cars I think that the colonial anthem was just a wink towards the fans, nothing more. And Zoe dancing

Re: 1x04
I think that when a show inspires wildly divergent opinions, it's a mark of a show with a lot of potential. Now I don't think Caprica is a great show. But I do think it could be. There are kinks to work out. I don't think they've really settled on what kind of people some of these characters are going to be. I don't think they're developing their motives very well as of yet. I find Avatar Zoe to be kind of opaque except for when she's with the young programmer guy. That part is fascinating. The rest of the time is kind of blah. I find Joe Adama to be just a mess of ideas. I know he's supposed to be conflicted, but if they want to develop him, they have to start with something. So far, I don't see it. They aren't making me care much about these characters. Sister Clarice also seems like a bunch of half-formed ideas. Quite frankly, I can't stand her. That group family could be a whole show on it's own, the complete opposite of Big Love, but it almost seems like a throwaway gag. I also want to see just what a Tauron is. It's sort of a grab bag of subcultures and racial identities. I feel like the writing crew didn't throw up enough deep background before starting to write these people. Of course, I've had a lot of tea tonight and I'm most likely reading (and writing) way too much into this. I need more TV shows to think about. I don't even DL anything much from Friday to Tuesday. Little bummed out by the offerings these days. I'll shut up now.

Re: 1x04
I watched 2 episodes so far and dont like it too much, coz it's abit too slow paced for my likiing. They have good character development but i miss the battles from BSG.
