Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

You can't really compare them as the types of magic are totally different. And as it has been said, they're each the most powerful of their fictional world.

For example, Dumbledore would be able to kill/petrify/etc Gandalf with a single spell, whereas Gandalf's spells don't work like that... At least not on the movies, I haven't read the books yet.

Re: Dumbledore vs. Gandalf

I've read all the posts above and have to agree that Gandaf is the more powerful wizard, BUT the poll is not who is the more powerful, but who would win in a fight. And yes there is a difference. Gandaf is a wizard in the Norse God style, way more powerful than Dumbledore, however the magic available to Dumbledore is better for a straight out fight.
Dumbledore is able to appriate (sp), Gandaf can't, Dumbledore can become invisible, Gandaf can't and finally Dumbledore is able to quickly cast a spell, in the LoTR's books Gandaf can't cast a spell anywhere near as quickly as Dumbledore can.
Imagine what Fredos trek would be like if he had access to Dumbledores magic instead of Gandafs. Side by Side appriation to Mt Doom, a quick invisiblely spell and a nice stroll up the mountain :-)

There are a few who could give Gandalf a decent fight as Gandalf the Grey.  (Elrond, Sauron, Saruman, Galadriel, and some really ancient beasts like the Balrog)  As Gandalf the White, I'm thinking he wins all of those fights, most without a decent battle.  I do like your "most powerful in his own fictional universe" argument, though we do have to imagine some sort of Superfriends scenario for this fight to happen.  (like how I pulled in your example?)

What about Mr. Tom Bombadill? Somehow I have got the impression that he is pretty much a supreme being, even too awesome for the films.

edit: but maybe he is just too much of a hippie to even want to put up a fight...
