Topic: Early Development News
If anyone is interested in fantasy shows here's some delicious news: In October 2009 HBO will start shooting the pilot episode for the adaptation of The Game of Thrones novel by George R.R. Martin. We already know the cast: * Sean Bean as Eddard Stark — The honorable Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell. * Jennifer Ehle as Catelyn Stark — The wife of Eddard Stark of Winterfell and mother of their five children. * Richard Madden as Robb Stark — The eldest son of Eddard and Catelyn Stark, heir to Winterfell. * Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark — The eldest daughter of Eddard and Catelyn Stark. * Maisie Williams as Arya Stark — The third child of Eddard and Catelyn Stark, a tomboy. * Kit Harington[23] as Jon Snow — The bastard son of Lord Eddard Stark. * Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy — The son of the Lord of the Iron Islands, a hostage and ward of Winterfell. * Mark Addy as Robert Baratheon — The King of the Seven Kingdoms, who took the Iron Throne after he crushed the reigning House of the Targaryens in a bloody civil war. * Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister — The Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and twin sister to Jaime Lannister. * Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister — A knight of the Kingsguard and twin brother to Queen Cersei Lannister. * Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister — A sarcastic and cynical dwarf, younger brother to the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Cersei Lannister. * Jack Gleeson as Joffrey Baratheon — The eldest son of Robert Baratheon and heir to the Iron Throne. * Tamzin Merchant as Daenerys Targaryen — The exiled princess of Westeros, one of the last members of the ancient Targaryen Dynasty. * Harry Lloyd as Viserys Targaryen — The exiled and bitter heir of the royal dynasty that once ruled the Seven Kingdoms, brother to Daenerys. * Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont — An exiled knight who was once the head of House Mormont and Lord of Bear Island. Also fans of Sarah Connor Chronicles and New Amsterdam should notice some familiar faces

only two books to go! unless some of those books will need to split again into two books and one is coming out this year, hopefully!

Re: Early Development News
I hope this will be done more "Rome", "Deadwood" way and not "Legend of the Seeker" way. Not that I have anything against Legend of the Seeker - I like this show, but The Song of Ice and Fire is something totally different.

Re: Early Development News
yeah, if it would be made like Rome, then this show will be just too good to be true. and yes, there is no way they could make Game of Thrones like Legend of the Seeker aka like good old Hercules and Xena.

Re: Early Development News
I like blood and gore if it is to make the series more believable (like Rome and Deadwood as mentioned by pablo-pancho), not if its blood and gore just for the sake of blood and gore - then its just a total turn-off for me. I've not read the books, only fantasy I ever read was JRR, I might pick them up I think...since I *really* like reading the book(s) before seeing the movie/series.

Re: Early Development News
Sex and violence is what makes these books more realistic, even if it is fantasy. There are no magical solutions (there is almost no magic, at least in the first 3 books I read). The brutes often win, the evil often prevails, the good guys often die. On the other hand the good guys have dark sides, the bad guys often have reasons to be bad or do something good sometimes, it is not so black and white...

Re: Early Development News
and about black and white, there are like couple of different sides in the book, and because Martin is writing from different point of views then i even don't know which side i want to win at the end. (for example: i bet, everyone want Lannisters dead, but Tyron is also Lannister and i really don't want him dead and i hope he will come out as winner at the end. and little spoiler: even Jaime seems like a good guy in last books and i really starting to like him). damn.. i want to read dance of the dragons.. and of course what a cliffhanger last book(Feast of Crows, or was it Feast for Crows..) was just when Martin told, that next book don't talk about characters in last book, but other characters. it means at least few years to wait before we can read what happened next to the character in that book.

Re: Early Development News
the 5th book is set to appear this year though i'll be surprised if i see it before christmas, if that. i must admit that i am completely hooked to the series. though there are some boring characters (like sam tarly, davos and bran, at least so far), the series as a whole is a masterpiece. i seriously doubt that the series can match the books but it should be a thriller... if they don't muck it up by throwing too much pg rated stuff in it, that is. the book is cruel and the show should be as well. it's not fun and games, it's a book where your favorite good guys get slaugthered on a daily basis without much warning. also, there's so much material that this show could run for twice as long as stargate

Re: Early Development News
HBO Greenlights Game of Thrones HBO has greenlighted highly anticipated fantasy series "Game of Thrones." The premium network has picked up the project for a first-season debut next spring. Nine episodes plus the pilot have been ordered. Production will begin in Belfast this June. The pickup comes on the heels of another HBO big ticket series order, for Terence Winter and Martin Scorsese's drama "Boardwalk Empire." From the moment "Thrones" was first announced in development, the series based on the George R.R. Martin novels has generated enormous, perhaps unprecedented, online interest for a series at such an early stage. The sprawling tale set in the mythical land of Westeros tells the story of the noble Stark family who become caught up in high court intrigue when patriarch Eddard (played by Sean Bean) becomes the king's new right-hand man. The four-and-counting books in the series would each be used as one season of the series. Also cast in leading roles are Lena Headey, Peter Dinklage and Jennifer Ehle. Unlike many fantasy novels, the "Thrones" series largely avoids relying on magical elements and instead goes for brutal realism -- think "Sopranos" with swords. Martin, a former TV writer ("Beauty and the Beast"), writes each chapter as a cliffhanger, which should lend itself well to series translation. Source: Hollywood Reporter

Re: Early Development News
uhh. 10 episodes per book. this certanly does not sound very good. the books are packed with so much things going on that i can't really imagine them telling it all.

yeah, i thought they said only that there will be 10 episodes. so that's just count for first season. they didn't say 1 book per season.

Re: Early Development News
no, seems that i missed that line. that line seems to say that in fact there truly can be book per season, but at least there's "would" in it, so it wouldn't mean, that it "is".
