The BBC today revealed that the companion for the forthcoming series of Doctor Who will be Karen Gillan.

Twenty-one-year-old Gillan will star alongside new Time Lord, Matt Smith, when the smash hit drama returns to BBC One in spring 2010.

With filming due to begin this summer, Gillan beat off dozens of hopefuls to land one of television's most coveted roles.

Gillan said: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, added: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales, Piers Wenger, said: "We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special. It is a partnership that is ready to take on the universe!"

The new series of Doctor Who comes to BBC One, Spring 2010.

I wonder if they'll bring this up? Or just ignore it.

(Or maybe mention, like they did with Gwen, that she looks familiar, etc.)

they'll ignore it... 1... their interaction with her was minimal [whereas gwen was a major part of the story] and the pace generally hectic...2 she was wearing that goofy make up, so recognizing, or finding some familiarity with her would seemed forced, and i like to think that Team Cardiff is better than that...

Re: Doctor Who unveils new companion for 11th Time Lord

They seem to have a thing with using previous actors in the series as companions...  Martha, Donna, and now her... whatever works I guess!..  though it would have been nice for them to actually do some work and find someone outside the "WHO" ring.

Man... I really want to see how Tennant's going to go... it's to long between these bloody specials!

Re: Doctor Who unveils new companion for 11th Time Lord

Just as long as having 2 such young actors in the primary roles doesn't make it more of a "kids" show.

I realise that Dr Who is kind of a kids show, well traditionally at least but  I think the fact that the revamp (especially series 1 with christopher ecelston) had more of a mature feel was what made it so great.

Tenet could get away with it being a little less dark, I actually think the show struggled a bit when they tried to make Tenets Dr face some darker issues. I have no idea what the new kid is capable of, I've never seen him in anything, but I hope they try to take the show back more in line with Ecelstons darker themed universe.

1... RTD has said that it needs to be accessible for kids... those who didn't grow up with the classic series... in order to ensure it's longevity....

2... the show has recently come under criticism for being too scary for it's timeslot...

i think it's safe to say your fears are more than justified.... which is shit, because it's not like they don't have the Sarah Jane show to cover that demographic... what they need to do is make more of that animated version for the kids and take the live action back to what it was in series 1...

You mean the mature feel of farting aliens (three episodes) or the cat people in the hospital, etc.? Eccleston was a more "scary" Doctor just because of how alien he looked and acted, Tennant was more of a "normal" looking guy. I wouldn't be too worried about the new series being too kid friendly. Remember, Moffat is the show runner and he has consistently given us the best episodes of every season not because they were so mature, but because they had something for everybody. Like a Pixar film, his episodes were so layered and rich that they worked on a low level for the kids and had plenty to offer to a mature audience. (Not to mention that they were always the scariest episodes of the season - "Mommy", Clockwork Men, Statues, Vashta Nerada were all very scary concepts, i.e. something that doesn't scare the kids so much as it does the adults.)

Are you implying that being mature means you never get to have fun?

Yes there were some lighter moments but on the whole, Ecelstons Drs Universe was much darker than Tenents..well I  felt it was anyway.

I believe the feeling stems from the two different takes on the Doctor - Tennant's Doctor has a child-like wonder and enthusiasm to him that Eccleston didn't have. Eccleston played the Doctor more grown up and more alien, simply darker than Tennant. And while Tennant had his dark moments they were overshadowed by the goofier ones by far.

I think that when you look at the stories themselves, we've got more mature/adult material with Tennant (The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, the implied cobblestone BJ in Love and Monsters, The Human Nature/Family of Blood, Blink, The Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Midnight). Now of course a lot of it is due to the fact that we had Tennant longer as the Doctor, but still. I think story-wise, if anything, the show got more adult.

Now there might be pressure for Moffat to tone it back down, but like I said - I think he's a phenomenal writer exactly because he creates several layers in his episodes where the kids just don't get some parts which can be truly unsettling for adults. But all we can do now is wait and see smile

I wonder if they allowed the stories for Tenent to be darker BECAUSE he played the Doctor in a lighter manner and thus evened it out a bit... and it wasnt too scary for the kids??

Could very well be. I think Doctor Who is definitely a strange show, because it is supposed to be a "scary kids show." When you have people talking about the "good old Doctor Who days of their youth," invariably you get stories about hiding behind the sofa as a kid, because the show was scary. I think everyone expects the show to be scaring the kids, the question is only how much ... and if theConundrumm is right then RTD might have crossed some kind of line. But then again, his stories were always the more infantile and silly ones, so who knows.

Well, it started as a way for kids to learn about history and such... but than they noticed that the aliens were more popular smile
