Barrington J Bayley is a goodun for both novels and short stories

I read "Soul of the Robot" many yrs back.

         Jasperodus is a young robot with a goal - to discover whether or not he has a soul.
    2 : Rod of Light, the (1985) by Barrington J Bayley
         continuation of Jasperodus

The Fall of Chronopolis and Collision with Chronos. 1989
these two are good for time travel story lines
