Topic: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

its been a while since i watched sg1.

so i have been watching season one again.

great sci-fi.
you can see where stargate influenced so many other shows after it.

but i forgot just how preachey it was about so many things.
and how campy much of what they did was.

writing was pretty good for the dialog. better then many shows today.

or maybe i just pay more attention to the subtext.
which is hard to believe that anything is "subtext" as its pretty obvious
the view points it.... well preaches.

preaching is not a bad thing, but its not a good thing either when done poorly.

20/20 hindsight
or maybe
100/20 hindsight.

you can never go home again.

( the wide screen and upscaling is amazing, but also lacks a lot)

Same thing happened with Mash once the actors started directing the episodes.

this is season 1 and season 2..LOL

and considering how the world has been going,
everything the show was preaching was mostly ignored.

I've been meaning to rewatch it, what is it preachy about?

the usual 90's stuff
all the things that we were so hopeful for
all the change the world thought was happening.
presented bluntly
like a hammer to a nail.

looking at the world today it sure shows how
arrogant with our superior society of social advancement we were back then
all the promise we had just went to hell in such a short time.

you are sure to see it and remember.

Re: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

Because shows like Star Trek Discovery and Star Fleet Academy aren't force feeding us their agenda with every scene?

At least SG1 was blunt about its hopefullyness like classic Trek, about maintaining our way of life, being patriotic etc.

When did being strongly patriotic become evil to these last couple generations?  Its sad

when we have justified genocide. censorship and  anything to make a profit.

maybe you are proud of killing children but no one else is.

the previous post i had here

went into detail of the sgc commuting war crimes

among other things.

i am not going to bother  going to detail just to be censored again.
but i am not going to shut up about genocide or other war crimes
either on tv or supported by tv

Re: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

It fairly obvious now that the Stargate program should never be in the hands of the US military or anything important ever again. They are now AmeriCANT not ameriCAN.

Re: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

SG1 preachy ?? WTF

Re: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

Preachy?  Not even close, strongly disagree with your opinion.

Genocide? War Crimes? lol...

Re: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

it is a war crime to kill a unarmed person
it is a war crime to desecrate a dead body

the zat gun kills with a second shot.  a person who is already stunned becomes dead
the zat gun was used by sg1 to disintegrate bodies

i could go on
like the general who wiped out an entire planet with a naqua bomb
or the time the sgc sent a probe to a planet and killed thousands of its inhabitants then the sgc
threatened to do it over and over to escape justice for those deaths..

all things they were proud of.

war crimes.

It's a TV show used to escape from reality.

I agree, @piraterepublic your ramblings are getting a bit much.

Re: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

Science Fiction does not equal reality.

Comparing SG1 to real Nazis is crazy, and takes the horror away from what really happened. If you do not like a show to that extend, do not watch it. Unless you like to torture yourself.

You are confusing fantasy with reality. Apples and oranges.

fantasy or not, having characters depicted commiting war crimes

so if you can root for someone killing a unarmed person on a tv show

that makes you unhinged and in denial about yourself

if you want to pretend that its ok depending on the flag you are flying.. that is on you

the show had the "heroes" commit these types of crimes. multiple times.
end of story.

OMG its a 20+ year old show and the hero worship ignores all things that are not hero worthy.
that is just sad

Damn, you shouldnt watch anything then i guess.. what boring television you seem to be wanting. It's called entertainment.. jesus. Sadly there is still many in hollywood with your views, making entertainment bland and boring.

Re: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

just good clean entertainment

https://screenrant.com/starship-trooper … explained/

its amazing how many people just do not see what is in front of them.

Upon its release, Starship Troopers was written off as an action movie with little need for further analysis.

but that is ok, some people did learn to read in school..

I can watch mind numbing horror stuff, or even movies like Schindler's list. I know the difference between fantasy and reality. Are you going to equate this with kids playing Zombie killing games as well? Since both are considered entertainment. What about the up and coming GTA6?

The trick is to be able to enjoy a multitude of things.  Granted I understand your point of view. Mine is simply not as narrow.

There was a time where shows and movies were not allowed to let the bad guy win. But that is not very realistic. People do get away with crap. But just as time changed that, so did the entertainment sector.

Give me a good, House on the Prairie, or Highway to heaven, I will watch Carrie, or Alien, and enjoy them as well.

Have a great day. smile

Re: i have forrgotton just how preachy SG1 was

which one of those horror movies do they call the horror a hero?

when a shindlers list is made and people cheer shindler being put up against a wall and shot at the end.

you might have a point

until then. you are ignoring the issue.

bad guys win all the time, they are rarely called a hero in any movie.

im not the one getting all bent out of shape learning their hero was a criminal like Stalin.

( yes lots of people have fictional heroes, its a sad world, or maybe lots of sad people)

This is what I am talking about.

The United States officially stopped enforcing rules that forced bad people to be punished in movies in 1968, when the Hays Code was replaced by the modern age-based rating system.

That is what I meant. And why can you not have a bad guy who is a hero? How one sided can you be?

Anyway, I will not debate this any further. I thank you for giving me things to think about, but it is time to move on.
Thank you for keeping this civil, and I appreciate your point of view as well.

It's just how the Americans work internationally and SG1 is propaganda for American foreign policy. Case in point: You don't drop two nuclear bombs if you're worried about "war crimes".

i do not have a problem with a bad guy being the protagonist.

the good bad and ugly comes to mind as a very good example of this.
and a LOT of really poor examples.
no one ever called "blondie" a hero, gave him metals or congratulated him on his crimes.

or take Reservoir Dogs.. no heroes there ... and no gets an award.
usual suspects is another one where no one glorifies the bad guy protagonists.

it is one thing to have a "bad guy" as the protagonist, another to glorify horrible actions of criminals.
dirty harry never shoots a unarmed man. as much as he would like to.

in stargate sg1 there are plenty of "situational morals" wrapped up in "the flag"
the issue is that not one of those crimes is ever prosecuted. most are ignored.
and who know how many are swept away, since there was no legal over-site.
the SGC ( airforce) acted like they had a legal declared war.
congressional over-site and approval of their actions.

they did not.
the show portrays any number of war crimes, any number of crimes against humanity,
as the right thing to do.
