Thats why the minute I seen Anson Mounts reaction, I understood it, and I was saying the same thing. And oh look, it was a soap. I guess that means other people think so as well.
within the first minute of this episode i was questioning if it was a soap opera or making fun of TOS and shatner's acting. it could have been going either way. i would have preferred if everyone has been acting like shatner in tos. have i watched a soap opera? never an entire one. but i have had to sit, while long minutes of my life drift away, while visiting elderly family members and they seem to watch nothing but soap operas. at least most soap operas are bad because they cant do better, and not on purpose. ( i hear mexican tele novelas are even more over the top with crasy writers and crazy actors)

Not Trelane, the Soap... I never watched a soap opera and only have seen small clips of them - that is not something I would ever enjoy or associate with Star Trek. Story was ok and especially the last scene was good.
Yup, it proved Pinocchio was a real boy after all.

I made it through the first 10 minutes of this latest episode and gave up it was so painful. Binned it and now removed from my watch list.

Ya, I agree. 407 - Like Chronitons Through The Hourglass, this bad Q soap opera episode actually worked. I liked that Q made fun of everyone, hung a lantern on their own stupidity (I took it as the writers were making fun of their own writing), and unpacked how both humans and Q's stumble into truth through their own ineptitude. Pike's imagined backstory landed much like our enjoyment of TV, how stories can impress real emotion when they have a connection to our own life. Still not Star Trek though.

But season 5 is where we see how pike ends up in the blink once for yes twice for no chair. And the Kirk era begins. How can a true Trekkie not wish to see that?

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
Maybe they saw how poorly the last season was received, where they mostly tried to be all serious and dramatic, then remembered how popular the Lower Decks episode in season 2 had been and overcorrected in that direction? Why they decided to bring back the "don't mention he's obviously supposed to be a Q" guy is beyond me though. The episode was nowhere near as horrible as it should have been, mostly because they kept Pike sane. Would still be better if they hadn't made it at all.

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
I couldn't do it. I started this soap opera episode 3 times… made it maybe, MAYBE 5 minutes each time, and stopped it. I couldn't get out of sickbay. I know the OVER dramatic acting, side views to the camera all that was deliberate and part of the joke... but the cringe doubled with the Captain being aware of it... commenting on the lighting... hearing the accent music... the entire 'self aware' of it all. The first 10 mins of it all was enough for me to say "This is an hour of my life I'll never get back. I'd rather re-watch an episode of Halo... or some guy doing a 3d printer unboxing on YouTube"

#1 i am not a trekkie. i love sci-fi starwars over star trek , preferably grimdark, but not warhammer but other then stephen r donaldson i am starved for good sci-fi so i read fantasy, which has what i need right now. strange new worlds is the only game in town right now.. but it is making real hard to not abandon for now and come back to when my brain is half cooked from old age i may not mind then..

@SgtSaint I understand your problem, I just chose to look at it in a different way. To me the overacting, lighting etc made it more humorous. They pumped that up to 120. So I drank it in and enjoyed Anson Mounts hilarious take on looking confused, they guys is a terrific actor. @piraterepublic Sorry to hear you on the wrong side. I could see the appeal. But I feel I could enjoy either, with no favouritism to either. Don't know grimdark but have heard of the Warhammer game. There is other game in town if you don't mind re-runs, or you could simply search for what you like, you could be pleasantly surprised. I have seen many good full length Docs on youtube, along with full length movies. I must have a plugin that voids ads, I have yet to see a single ad.

anything worth seeing, i pretty much have seen it or walked away before it could finish. i pretty much have not seen an ad that was not on the news hour. i have access to most streaming services and fly the black flag when home or away from the famous bay.

Yeah, that's the actual problem - Is not supposed to be an extreme parody of itself. This is like watching an *actual* "Wormhole Extreme", and it not being the parody show within Stargate SG1

Oh man, I loved wormhole extreme. Stargate SG1 knew how to make funny episodes. But then they had a great cast. I also enjoyed "Window of Opportunity" from Season 4, Episode 6. Its the groundhog day of stargate. Funny as well.

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
I was so disappointed by Season 4 Episode 7 that I turned it off right in the middle. This season in general has been a disappointment.. it feels like they ran out of ideas and just started seeing what they could rehash from other Star Trek series. I mean "Puppets" and Soap Operas? Come on! This isn't Star Trek, its a spoof!

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
finally a goodish episode and what star trek should mostly be. good sci-fi with (almost) proper morality at its core ▼Spoiler yes it was still mostly poor writing overall. they telegraphed just about every plot point like a grade school essay. ( hey this drug makes people paranoid as a side effect) for all the time spent pushing the point of war crimes are wrong. in the end they still justify committing them. "the admiral was poisoned" other wise the crew should have murdered 5000 people for his revenge. was just a cop out any star trek pre 2010 would have had that admiral drummed out of starfleet and to say starfleet would have let a captain blackball his first officer after a successful engagement, fraudulently rewrite that engagement and promote that captain to admiral to continue to harass his ex first officer is obscene (but possible and likely realistic in a grimdark star trek) its a step in the right direction. but it is very weak overall in writing, mostly because someone is too scared to commit to their moral compass. be that moral compass leading to evil or good. accept what you are. i am sure some writers were pushing one direction for the story to go while others were justifying the need for revenge. in the end you have a just a bit better then "meh" episode. which is a lot better then soaps or half assed puppets. the side story was ok, if you accept a single ensign could over power a troop of ex military heavily armed mercs, and even beat their leader in hand to hand combat when her original squad quickly gave up to those same mercs.

Agreed. Decent episode. Characters were behaving weird though, just weird. And I mean despite the situation. Always good to see Joe Morton - one of my favorites ever since Eureka. ▼Spoiler His attendant could've at least gotten one line to speak, especially considering the situation. Even when they stopped him towards the end, she did nothing...shouldn't she know about his situation, either she is going along with it or blinded by his status - but anyway should've constituted a reaction from her. Also, did Scotty wear a woman's uniform?

i put down the lack of crew being the crew to the admiral super war hero in charge, and kirk put in charge over spock confusing /demoralizing them. IMOHO they were all looking at each other for direction and no one stepped forward to provide it. with kirk doing so, that should give him more respect with the crew in about a year or so. ( except for nurse chapel) ▼Spoiler is mbenga gone now or soon??? he did admit to poisoning an admiral. is a new chief medical officer coming this season or next Joe Morton was not looking healthy at all in this show IMHO

Nope, for the first time in the long history of Trek, I've dropped a Trek show. I've really liked it so far, but season 4 is just awful, and seeing there's a fifth one coming I can't stomach more of this. Meh. 8/10 down to 5/10.

Soooo, SNW 408 - Orders of Magnitude, is just Crimson Tide. Are you guys too young to have seen Crimson Tide? If you like this kind of story, you should go back and watch old Tony Scott movies, they're a lot like this, lolz, except Crimson Tide is really good, Denzel was amazing! This episode though, was bad, like the action scenes were slow and the writing was forced, and you could see the ending coming a mile away, and yes, Scotty was wearing a dress. Also, didn't Khan do something similar in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, hijack a ship because Kirk killed his family? A Few Good Men? It pulled from sources. @SgtSaint, I know it's your thing, but I went ahead and updated your list: 1. Valles Marineris - 65 / Land of the Lost / The End of Oak Street 2. The Griffin Incident - Event Horizon 3. Human Best Friend - The Hangover / Dude, where's my car? 4. A Case of Chiaroscuro - Casablanca / Maltese Falcon 5. Level-Five Transporter Accident - Muppets From Space / Pigs In Space 6. Off-Hour - 24 (The TV series) 7. Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass - Days of our Lives 8. Orders of Magnitude - Crimson Tide 9. Once La'an a Time 10. Yesterday's Enterprise All this episode did was make me miss Eureka and Henry's Garage:

Re: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
I enjoyed the last episode and for those who do not know here is some info on S5 Season 5 Details Episode Count: The final season will consist of six episodes instead of the usual ten. Production Status: Filming for the fifth season wrapped in late 2025. Release Window: Season 5 is expected to premiere on Paramount+ in 2027. Tone: Cast and crew have teased that the shortened final run will be a very serious, contained conclusion leading right up to the events of Star Trek: The Original Series.
