Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
Regarding predictions will see, this can go in many directions ▼Spoiler Depends on what actually silo 1 is - is it the descendants of the same management? Are there ppl outside of silos? What caused the nuke to go off? The current status is that with Bernard's suicidal distraction they took out "Vitamin D+" stuff, so silo 17 now has a fighting chance against silo 1 and probably about that will be the last season - a civil war between silos. Also after all this probably the hierarchy will disintegrate and nobody in silo 17 will follow The Pact anymore. Meaning, if the screen cannot kill them anymore or wipe their memory, what's the point to maintain that circus? To prevent somebody going outside? Go check it out, let know how it went - this never made sense, because it's not like thousand people will run out outside at once They were held inside essentially by a form of religion.

▼Spoiler Silo building there is happening around 2050, so they can have a theoretical tech we don't have today - meaning can assume that the boom was thermonuclear or something new (tho at this stage is no info what blew up there - can be anything from latest H-bomb to smuggled Russian old nukes stock pile). Fallout would be in any case. We don't know what, who, why. But that does not change the physics that if you can make a coffee while it gets to you, you won't be vaporized by it. To me this is the most interesting question how and with what they will excuse the need to stay in silos. Because one big boom is far from enough.

g371 wrote:▼Spoiler Will see in the next episode(s) - imo clearly confirmed is that knew the guy who sent the guard to get him. CEO etc. were on the stage last time we saw them (meaning, also would need to Usain Bolt to some silo, unless they started walking exact same moment as he left after getting that strange message). Meaning, imo, at the moment is not certain that between that mgmt/organizers are not different factions as well. Overall tho there was an impression that all that is staged to get them into silos - exact grouping by id cards rfid, facial recognition etc. And btw from here comes another cognitive dissonance - so far in silos was shown some ancient-ish tech, but here they have augmented reality, ability to do facial recognition on fly, The Pact written by some kind of "AI". On the other hand that supports that silo 1 is technologically more advanced.
▼Spoiler Well the senator and the CEO definitely seem on top of things; he clearly wants the engineer-congressman in the main silo, because he's useful, and the reporter not so much, probably because she opposed him. They also seem to have done something to the sister, who seems to be the wife of the senator's now mostly estranged daughter, so that the latter ends up in 1 and the former does not? Both is too convenient. Whatever the social experment is about, they are clearly trying to prevent scientific advancements from derailing it; the ban on strong magnifying lenses is one example. The fact that they put all "advanced" technology into storage instead of allowing even simple manufacturing or even just encouraging repairs is another. g371 wrote:▼Spoiler The point is that if it takes a minute for the shockwave to reach you some flying tree can kill you, but you won't be cooked alive or even start to glow in the dark. Radiation will come later when that mushroom with wind and rain will fall back to the ground. So, if they wanted to show with that a catastrophic event that you need to go underground and cannot leave anymore, it's not very believable. But all that was left with a cliffhanger and will see in next episodes. Plus, I expected something more fancy than nukes, like what was happening with those fighter jets before? ▼Spoiler But that does not change the physics that if you can make a coffee while it gets to you, you won't be vaporized by it. To me this is the most interesting question how and with what they will excuse the need to stay in silos. Because one big boom is far from enough.
▼Spoiler That's probably the trick though, isn't it? Set off a single nuke to scare everyone into the silos. Nukes are big and scary and everyone knows what they look like, unlike invisible nanites. But do it far enough away that it doesn't actually kill or irradiate anyone yet. Then you can keep them all inside for a good long while by threatening them with the fallout. And while you have them inside, they won't have any way to tell what is going on outside, so you can just spin a narrative of doomsday. At that point, introduce the memory drug while constantly repeating that outside is not safe, and you got yourself a population that will stay. Then just introduce a way to ensure that everyone who walks outside will die, visibly to everyone, and even the idea of leaving will mostly disappear. That's what the nanites or whatever it is are for.

▼Spoiler They probably did wipe out the world in one way or another, because otherwise somebody would have checked on the silos at that point, but they didn't necessarily do it with nukes alone. Silo 1 almost definitely never had their memories wiped. That would mean giving up control, and nobody who builds kill switches likes to do that.

▼Spoiler Yes, everything is about to not let them leave, not allow to communicate with other silos and to keep them under control by whoever are the overlords behind the screen. Not about solving the problem why they cannot leave. If they could research and manufacture, they could do a bunch of advances which could compromise that - from doing chemistry what's the status outside to building weapons and comms.

▼Spoiler All looked this way, except that it was not clearly shown that all organizers went into silos. Why I'm not fully convinced before it's confirmed - because that's one impressive party trick to probably level some city and then run for cover to sell the doomsday. Would be a bit more sane to do that speech inside. And, yes, likely that nano stuff is what is killing them outside. A major question is the explosion was just a motivator to get them in silos or there full scale war started with some nano weapons and whole planet is wiped out. Meaning, both are plausible - that nano stuff is used as a fence and also that it's a legit contamination that can linger for centuries. Also I think that magical nanobots will be riddled with logic holes - like for example before was shown that they can take out a fighter jet, meaning, pass metal. But some suit can stop them? Also was shown that if you are briefly exposed to whatever is outside, you can recover - that means human body somehow can metabolize that nano magic

Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
Season 3 all caught up for the final episode next week. Binging was definitely the right decision imho I did not appreciate the small inserts (Iran, Bunker-Buster, Snowden, etc.) into this story. The secondary plot-line in the Silo was interesting and felt a lot more pressing than the main story...unfortunately it fell very flat and was just another plot-device at the end. Daniel is by far my favorite character of the Season, great addition. I would've liked it if the Flashbacks were a Spin-Off Series that we got inbetween Season 2 and Season 3... And then there are the plot holes... (incl. EP09)
▼Spoiler The sister get's a flight mission...and then has time to arrange meetings with a reporter, talk to her brother and whatever else?? Is there really that much opportunity between getting a top secret assignment and going on the mission? What even made her so suspicious of the mission? The pills are by far the stupidest plot point and never properly explained. "They block of your memory and once you stop taking them you can pick and choose the memories you draw out"...absolute BS. If talking about the past and objects from the past are used to draw out the memories...than anything can trigger a "bad memory" (as we have seen in EP08). How are they going to bring Jimmy and the kids from 17 to 18? They didn't bring any spare suits with them and Juliette knows there aren't any left over there either.... Isn't the secret in supplies a much bigger threat to the Silo than the secret in IT? Why isn't "the voice" concerned about that? After all there are no cameras in the mines... So the elevator was to steal critical supplies from a vault specifically designed for them and put them in an arguably less safer location to keep them safe??? The biggest disappointment though is that we didn't learn anything new about the door on the bottom of the digger void... If the Silos are really just a wet-dream come true from a filthy rich prepper...meh. Three years?? Not possible. Also the layout of the Silos make it look like there are secrets in other Silos as well, not just Silo 1. Did Charlotte drop the nuke? Was her mind manipulated for that purpose?

Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
309 - Farewell - I enjoyed the first half of the show, really well done, excellent performances, and even Andy Dufresne was talking about redemption stories again, if anyone else caught that reference. ▼Spoiler The AI in the server room works with humans in Silo 1, but is still an AI.
I did not care at all about the second half flashbacks of this ep as it didn't unpack anything we didn't already assume in season 1. ▼Spoiler Clearly AI had already taken over Earths weapon control systems, much like the story in Horizon Zero Dawn, nukes launched, nanobots/nanites deployed, game over for Earth, Per Stensen was probably responsible for it, just like RobCo OS in Fallout.
I would've preferred a flashback story surrounding the design team and construction crew who worked with Per Stensen during the pre-construction design phase of the Silos, as that's far more interesting to me than a post construction journalist-congressman mysterybox story that wasn't really a mystery because we already knew what they would find. The only interesting question about them is 'whose descendants are from Daniel and Helen'?

Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
The mines themselves bug me. Just how much new raw iron ore does the silo really need? I mean, how are they going through TONS of steel annually? And ore processing is a MASSIVELY air polluting process in a closed silo. Its a closed biosphere: What's being done to clean the air? You can't tell me the farms are cleaning it all: The math doesn't hold up. What about 10,000 people's bodily excreted waste? Its not all going to fertilizer. And we know its not getting dumped in the void space water source. Are the mines really just to become land-fills?

Why aren't there machines for mining? Busy work for silo dwellers? It would be great if there were an episode on the interconnectedness of resources. There is a technology for everything in Silo, all cleanly explained away with a deus ex machina, a god machine. Every time you ask this question, how do they deal with the problem of (enter your problem), just answer with 'Per Stensen used a technology', which the company probably bought or stole. We might even get a season about Per Stensen's industrial espionage and exploitation needed to make the Silos operate.

IMDb 8.1@232k, IMDb #3 most popular at the moment, nominated and won a bunch of awards etc. That said, somebody for sure won't like it, not easy to follow sci-fi mystery drama. If dont' like to think, not recommended probably IMDb 1 start review, 19 ppl found it helpful It's all nonsensical. Nothing is explained. It's like every episode I'm waiting for something to click that just explains what is happening but it never comes. Why should I care about this person or that person being upset or doing a certain action when you don't know why they're doing it or what the purpose of anything is.

I'd still say though that there was a big drop from Season 1 to Season 2 + 3...Season 1 is something I can rewatch at any time (and already have). But I have no desire to do that with S2+3.

Yes, S03 is way worse, plus it's an AMC show, which can end up with 7 seasons and beating the same dead horse for 3 seasons straight

Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
310 - Troy. Woah! 😮 That's crazy. Looking forward to next season. ▼Spoiler Horrifying watching Daniel mercilessly kill off thousands of people using a compound inside drones, and insane that this is exactly the kind of psychological experiment you think it is! Controlling others leads to a need for freedom. We'll never learn. I was very wrong about it being AI, and very wrong about the importance of Daniel's backstory, relieved they weren't all for nothing like I presumed. To think they captured Daniel, drugged him with the forgetting drugs, brain washed him into believing the pact, forced him into working in Silo 1, somehow have the tech to cryogenically freeze him for years at a time (that's the part I dismissed existing in our day), and use him to exterminate thousands of people to keep the pact going over centuries, all for the purposes of keeping the cohesion and control of all Silo's under the thumb of Silo 1. He's WAY more important than the backstory would lead me to presume. We know he'd rather turn to grey goo than be in that Silo, so, Silo 18 will need the help of Daniel to defeat Silo 1, now that he remembers they separated him from Helen. Daniel and Helen's love for each other now becomes very important. Then somehow free the rest of the Silos, explain what happened to life outside, then determine whether it's possible to build a life outside. Who set off the nuke? Is Per Stensen in permanent cryostasis until life resumes outside or is he a worker too? What happened to him? What's up with the subterranean vault door? Is it a connection to the other silos? Who was smuggling goods out of critical supply? Did they ever answer that? Where did that many goods go, and who would need them? Is there already a mine connection to an adjacent Silo? Will Juliette tell the truth to the rest of Silo 18? Will they go into IT and start reading books again, and teach them the truth? Will they finally get rid of the Pact?

Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
3x10 For what it was, it's a great episode...but imho it didn't explain enough, just a ton more questions. Big setup and therefore very big expectations for Season 4 - they will have to pull out all the stops for that since it's apparently going to be the last Season. Right now I can't imagine how they will bring this to a satisfying end with only 10 more episodes...but I am happy to let them surprise me. This episode did not change my opinion that Daniel is my favorite character of the season. Looking forward to uncover how it all came to be. Juliette could've had more to do in this Season. They built her up as lead character and here she felt more like support. ▼Spoiler They make us like Daniel and Helen so much, give us a gigantic cliffhangar at the end of EP09 and than this... argh, wanna know what happened to her and maybe if she had any impact on the Silo 18 we see today. Who will be her descendent? That is a must for a story like that...at least I want it to be What I don't get is...with all the talk about AI in the last two episodes ...how do they don't have any? Instead of using Daniel as Troy, wouldn't an actual AI be better? Camille got off easy, seriously no repercussions? The door at the bottom of the digger void...meh, would've expected more there.
Overall I would give the Season a 7/10.

Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
Good episode. That all went roughly as expected, but wasn't sure
▼Spoiler whether they would have stasis technology. They kinda would have to, for the whole project to work like that. Having your descendants a dozen generations down the line carry on that kind of work without going into the weeds with it is basically impossible; that's where an AI would indeed have made sense. Bringing up that, but never mentioning stasis, was probably supporsed to be a red herring here. paisley1 wrote:▼Spoiler Who set off the nuke? ▼Spoiler Setting off the nuke right next to the silos suggests it's what I described last week. A big flashy light show to keep the people inside. Otherwise it would have simply been dropped directly on top, and not right after everyone already went inside. It was the "founders" who dropped it. Probably, yeah. He described how anxious he is about living in a world where anyone could have access to the kind of weapon he can't buy safety from. He wants to live in that new world. Maybe he takes one of the "shifts" as director every once in a while. The vault door leads to a tunnel that in turn leads to silo 1. Every silo has one of those, because they mention that 17 used to have one too until it got flooded. The smuggling was done by the mining chief guy and some of his folks. They basically just put the stuff somewhere else so that it wouldn't get lost during the rebellion. Seems that whole plotline was just a way to introduce the elevator into the story, and to show us that the silos were never meant to be able to run forever. There doesn't seem to be a mine connection yet, but they are planning to dig one towards silo 1 now, to go on the attack. Probably yes, yes and yes. Eventually.

▼Spoiler They showed him staring fairly intently at that still of Juliette's face from the door camera, so that might be a family resemblance thing. But one additional detail to notice here, is that the recording from the dead guy said "her name is", not "her name was".

Did I forget anything?
Only the rat poison this season! But then again, she did not get to do a lot of things at all, this time. Left most of the near misses to the other folks.

▼Spoiler If all that is in not so far future and those Directives and Pacts were written by more or less todays generative "AI" then it actually would be believable that they suck and no real decisions are made using them. At no point so far there was mentioned a definite AGI. Also a small question how to power it. Tho since it is based on some book, which probably was not written yesterday, there totally still is a chance of some AGI surfacing somewhere. Like, for example, we still don't know the whole food chain and how they talked about Directive, The Project + obviously also had memory resets, hints that we saw some middle management and that easy can take a direction that Silo 1 is controlled itself by some AGI. And that also would fit the theme that humans are on the way to obliterate themselves by definition. It's an objective fact, only humans have a problem with objective - AGI tho has math, probabilities calculations and no such problems. Keeping humans in silos as pets also is pretty likely AGI behavior. And there is some big sacred door Yep, AGI went wrong could tie together "all this makes no sense" beautifuly.

Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
btw ▼Spoiler With what silos can contaminate each other? Except information - to have parallel branches of evolution or alike? To me more and more feels like each silo is a lab - that also would explain why to wipe out 10k people is the right move. If you look at them as lab rats which broke out and risk to put in danger labs next to it, what would a scientist do? Save rats or the experiment?

Pretty much that, yeah. Depends on what the point of separating them in the first place was, and what the plan for eventual reintegration, if any, is. Maybe it's just for actual study of the way societies work in practice and to have enough control groups to validate any findings with.

Or ▼Spoiler ...if we go AGI master race route, to check if it is possible to breed/form human society which don't tend to gravitate towards a destruction. If yes, let them out, if not - well, the experiment failed, it happens

Re: Silo [Drama, Sci-Fi]
Another question I was wondering about
▼Spoiler Why didn't they kill Juliette when she went to Silo 17? What was so special about that situation that she is the only one that was allowed to go beyond the mound? I get that they couldn't take action when she was still in view of the screen for 18 but once she was no longer visible they could've taken her out. Silo 1 also didn't say anything to Bernard at that point (S02E02).
Deserved more runtime: Abbys | Dead Like Me | Devs | Firefly | Gangsta. | Jack of all Trades | Kevin (probably) saves the World | Lodge 49 | Mrs. Davis | NYC 22 | Powerless | Roadkill | Special Unit 2 | Stumptown | Surface | The Brave | The Crazy Ones | The Finder | The Middleman | Truth Seekers | Two Weeks to Live | Whiskey Cavalier https://next-episode.net/user/WilliamDrakeMcGregor/
