Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

lol canceled for season 3 after season 2 is shot but before it is aired...
but still stubbornly going to run season2..

maybe they will take some advice from the bachelorette
and not set back the franchise 20 years by airing season 2 of this show

if you ignore what your hard core fans want often enough, they stop being fans.
reboots, re imaginings, resets, whatever, if you mess with the tried and true history or story.
what you mess with is any chance anyone will be there next time..

I think this video and the comments below it, say what I felt for every episode I watched.

I don't agree with the title, since I am still not sure what woke is.

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

i would like to see the writers of this show bring out  "holy bible 2" or "Tanakh,2"
because honestly i think religious people are far more accepting
of having things more progressive now then ever before.

however starwars, startrek, marvel and DC fans are mostly HARD CORE in
their fandom. and messing with things really is bad....

i really feel bad for most reboots. few are very good or original.
there are a lot of big shoes to fill. and most writers dont seem to have
the vision to rerwrite a story of epic proportions, and everything
needs to be epic now.

It doesn't have to be epic. That is where most reboots or sequels / prequels nowadays go wrong.
They just need to realize that their new story is part of a big fantastic world that has been established by others.
Stay true to the original, pay respect and don't try to outshine it - that's it.

Best example: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
Simple story, good characters and a feeling of nostalgia for the fantasy world of George R.R. Martin.

Deserved more runtime:
Abbys | Dead Like Me | Devs | Firefly | Gangsta. | Jack of all Trades | Kevin (probably) saves the World | Lodge 49 | Mrs. Davis | NYC 22 | Powerless | Roadkill | Special Unit 2 | Stumptown | Surface | The Brave | The Crazy Ones | The Finder | The Middleman | Truth Seekers | Two Weeks to Live | Whiskey Cavalier

Ask 10 people and you'll get 10 answers.
To me: Its trying to make the 97% believe that the 3% are the future of the species.  Its defining "we want equality" as needing parades, banners, special laws, special protections, entire month of parades (that we don't even honor our soldiers with) and a dozen other things to set them apart and above.

Trek has always shown diversity in its truest form to me.  (DS9) Kor had zero issue with Dax changing to a woman. He wanted to know his old friend Kurzon was still in there.  When Dax started telling stories of their 'good old days' that was enough for him and let's get back to drinking.  Just one example of many throughout legacy Trek.  In post 2009 Trek its all about how the sexuality of the person is what makes them strong and special: Not that they were strong and special *as a person* with total disregard for their orientation.  Its their identity that makes them special and that is some pretty weak foundation for one's qualifications.

Its also how you can look at the cast of a show before it airs and know which box their character is going to be in.  The darker or gayer the person the more righteous their character.  The whiter and straighter the actor, the more of a jerk/villain they are.  Don't believe me: Look at the cast of Discovery on IMDB and you can see it.  Heck, Jason Isaac was so white and straight he's not even part of the primary cast on that page and you have to hunt down his inclusion even though "Lorca" was integral to the start of the show.  Burnham or Book: Good guys.  Stamets is gay but white so mostly ok.  Culber is gay but black and becomes a savior.  Georgio is asian so in the middle and thus redeemable bad: She's evil but has a redemption arc to become a force for good.

You see it in modern Doctor Who as well.  In the anniversary specials they tore down David Tennent's doctor with all this blatant "well if you were a woman you'd understand" lines. (really that's in there)  Donna Noble somehow went from being a ditz to a savior. Eventually the show died with Ncuti Gutzwi as a flaming doctor.  And its not that Doctor Who fans have a problem with gay people: They love Capt Jack Harkness etc.

Its the *way* in which those shows have shifted the focus from the person to their identity politics that I consider "wokeness".  They aren't shows or stories about people, in situations, and events and plots - and oh, as a side note they might be straight or they might not: But that's not the important bit.

They are shows about people of specific demographic and identities and they are heroes for it... that they then build a script around to showcase how that characteristic of the person is so lofty and makes them special, and here's a situation we've contrived to demonstrate that.

Does that make any sense?

Wow. That is like essay quality stuff there.

You're replies are beyond on point and uniquely placed.

Always enjoyed reading your posts. Quite informative in a non threatening manner.

But after a few joints, it kinda hurts to go that deep. I will re-read it again in a few hours. smile

Okay back.

-== 7 hours later ==-

Would love to answer you point for point, but not sure how to quote each section. So I will simplify give you my answer.

Never watched Dr. Who, old or new. And most of the points I agree with you. Especially #1. This usually happens when people are talking out of their ass, and are not sure what eg. Woke means. Like me. But I don't claim to know what it means.

Agree with the Trek, but its too damn early for me to delve into the finer points. But I get your drift.

As for the cast, I also know what you mean, but I had no clue with the exception of the Fat hologram girl that this character would be supper annoying. You could not tell the Klingon was gay. And I would have thought that a Klingon who does not fight and does nasty stuff with other male Klingon's would have been disappeared in the old ways.
Sort of like the myth of the Spartans. Baby born deformed, off the cliff it goes, kinda thing.

In the original Trek, I do not think I ever seen a Gay gentleman or Lesbian or gender this or that, forgive me if I forget the Alphabet that continues to change. I am sure they had them. But in the mid 60's, they stayed in the closet. With the exception of the Kelvin Timeline. But then true trekkies do not consider that timeline to be of any consequence.

On a personal level, I do not care about orientation, but to see them all come out at once ruins the entire mythology for me.Since I grew up with the original Trek.

And Star-fleet Academy was written for Gen - Z and millennial's. It is not the Gen-X Boomer version of Trek, and that is why you get the backlash.

Wow, I need a smoke now. Thanx again for your long answer. As always, very informative and fun to read. May we fence again. smile

Not really much to add to that... and this isn't meant to be the new woke thread...
Just wanted to say 'thanks for the kind words' regarding my posts and comments.  Its very much appreciated.

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

You know it's bad when the actors that were on the show (SF:A) are glad it's cancelled.  And I heard that Paramount won't be renewing Alex Kurtzman's contract either.  I mean, when you spend $8M on a single episode for a series where the episodes don't make it into the top 10 of Nielsen ratings on a consistent basis...just wow.

And to top it all off, the OG cast (Shatner, Frakes, Spiner, etc) went to Paramount and told them if they didn't drop the woke bull**** that they would tear down the franchise after 60 years on television.

Look, I enjoyed the show, because I could look past the "woke agenda" and enjoy the storylines, but at the same time, I watch science fiction to escape reality for a little bit, not to be made to feel a certain way about real life.

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

There is an article out there where the viewer numbers shave been leaked.

https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/s … ngs-2.html

400,000 view for the entire season on Paramount+. .... wow! That's a whole new level of terrible.

$8M per episode to get low end youtube channel viewing figures.

On the plus size, we now at least know how big the "modern audience" is lol

Wow. That article was harsh as F#@$. But if true, then a lot of money has been wasted. And the accusation of thousands of bots pumping it up, are troubling. Especially with A.I. on the horizon.

I fear we will see more of this behaviour in the future. And it makes me wonder when and if it was done in the past. That's why I no longer trust I.M.D.B reviews or ratings.

Re: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

i have to say those numbers sound just horrible.
but quickly looking at the top 100 videos shared by those flying the black flag
and star fleet academy is not even on the list. not one episode.

scrubs, fallout, the pitt and marshals all have some presence.
(or a lot in some cases)

but i think that if no one cares to share this show only a week or two after the season is over
there could not be much demand to watch it.
and even less people who want to suggest others to watch it.

that is a no nonsense, non commercial control, zero bot, honest to whatever top 100 list of what is popular.

I've said this before and is generally one of my 3 metrics for all shows' true audience appeal.

  • How bad must a show be that people won't even p1rate it?

  • Look at merchandise. Decades later you can see NEW Trek TNG merch like the new NERF phaser rifles.  But no toy maker even wants the license for all this post 2009 trek. Eaglemoss tried it early with the ships from Discovery and went bankrupt.

  • Cosplayers.  Go to a convention and see where the love is.  Decades later you see TOS-ENT cosplayers.  You see Firefly browncoats.  You see Stargate personnel.  You see Belters and MCRN from The Expanse. Halo guys in armor.  What you don't see is KurtzmanTrek cosplayers
