Re: Slow Horses

It would be helpful to edit your post to add which season or episode your spoiler is about.

Re: Slow Horses

Season final.

Storywise it was good, liked most of it.
But some characters were done bad at the end.

Spoiler

Roddy Ho, after the interview he was just standing around...doing nothing. And in the last half of the episode he basically didn't exist. I expected him either stealing back the 100mil or confronting Tara in the holding cell...something but not nothing... meh.

Shirley...apart from headshotting that one terrorist, also nothing. After they build up her PTSD and grief about Marcus so much in the end nothing...I said it before she deserved a win and that wasn't it...meh.

Really disappointed how they ended the season for those two characters.

On another note...what happened to Louisa? I expected her to show up at some point through all of this. Apart from that phone call she basically doesn't exist anymore in the show, not even the preview for next season showed her. Did the actress quit the show?

Deserved more runtime:
Abbys | Dead Like Me | Devs | Firefly | Gangsta. | Jack of all Trades | Kevin (probably) saves the World | Lodge 49 | Mrs. Davis | NYC 22 | Powerless | Roadkill | Special Unit 2 | Stumptown | Surface | The Brave | The Crazy Ones | The Finder | The Middleman | Truth Seekers | Two Weeks to Live | Whiskey Cavalier

Re: Slow Horses

What I like is they have only made a few dramatic changes from the books. In particulsr, the main Slough House characters are very much as written and the plots follow pretty much as Mick Herron wrote them.

Catherine Standish is the other stand-out character for me and the actor Saskia Reeves deserves all the praise for her work.

I felt there was a foreshadowing in one of the earlier eps this season. Do you think (your spoiler) might be an indication of

Spoiler

Lamb being sick? Remember the fuss Standish made about his smoking and how it will kill him someday?

Thank you! I was going to ask about this!

Re: Slow Horses

I f*****g HATE Roddy. He just laughed at everyone while shit was going down. And

Spoiler

there was no blame and no consequences for his involvement. Even if he was ignorant he should have had some punishment

. And as a woman...%^&**@@#%. And again. And once more.

I like Coe. An enigma wrapped in a mystery swaddled in sweats.

smile I looked that up for you:

Spoiler

"My understanding is that it was a scheduling conflict as she was cast as the lead for Netflix series Missing You. As for why she’d take that over Slow Horses, it’s the difference between being top billed for a Netflix show and being a co-star on Slow Horses, so I get it from her perspective. Apple also pays non-top stars poorly (as does Netflix for that matter) but she will be paid better as first billed than for Slow Horses. Plus material wise, she gets to be the Gary Oldman of her show. Since SH films back to back seasons, I’m guessing we don’t see her in S6 either. let’s hope she’s back for the next two after."

Thanks smile - That's too bad, but understandable. Yeah let's hope for S7.

I kind of thought she was a nothing character. I don't even remember if she did anything besides snarl and mope.
I hope River finds a reason to come back to life. Someone pointed out that he's got quite an attitude this season, but I understand. He has no one. No (real) parents, no partner, no friends because of his job, and the one person he loves and relied upon is no longer available as a sounding board. He knows he has more to offer the Park, but gets blocked by Taverner. And unlike some of the others, I don't think we've even seen his London flat (which cinematically isolates him even more from us).

Re: Slow Horses

Can someone explain how Claude Whelan got appointed to First Desk? He couldn't possibly have been an agent!

That's how governments are, it's way more realistic than somebody actually competent there.

no

Spoiler

no he told a story to entertain in a previous episode  whilst the gang were held in Slough House, after Roddy was taken, about an agent being caught and tortured whilst his girl friend was killed in front of him I believe, he saiid at the time it was just fiction, but that final shot of his feet tells us it was him!

I could understand it. Shirley, as a Slough Houser, nothing expected of her, did more than enough with that action. She aint no James I mean Jane Bond.

Roddy standing around like a hapless dipshit also perfectly suited his character.

Whelan, completely understandable how he got the job. You'd say it's completely unrealistic that such an inept twit could land such a plum job.... but you'd be underestimating the pull of the British class system. It boggled my mind when I was there. Open your mouth and whatever accent pops out pigeon holes you for life. There is no moving up or down from your assigned station. Can totally believe how mumsy or p'pa would have "had a word with the home secretary, we used to break wind at college together you know" and hey presto, posh berk is sorted, albeit now in a job wayyyyy over his head.

There is even a better example - Tulsi Gabbard, who parrots RU propaganda 1:1 and by some miracle also is Director of National Intelligence, haha

Re: Slow Horses

one little  tidbit.

Spoiler

Jaffrey = Sadiq Khan the hated ( by some) London mayor. Catherine shouted out "why do you hate motorists?" referring to the London ULEZ, to get him off the stage when he was was about to be killed by the sniper

So she has a far better grasp on reality and has far better knowledge of the situation than you do.. OK !

Re: Slow Horses

Please stop with the politics and get back to the topic.

I've started reading Slow Horses and, yeah, the show pretty much follows the book. There's a slow horse who, so far, is just a name in the book and was written out of the show (Kay White?) and there were only 3 kidnappers in the book instead of 4. For once, I'm glad I watched the adaptation before reading the book.
