Scavengers Reign is an American adult animated science fiction drama television series created by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner for Max, based on their 2016 short film Scavengers. HBO Max announced the series in June 2022, and its 12-episode first season premiered on October 19, 2023. The series follows the survivors of the damaged interstellar cargo ship Demeter 227 who are stranded on Vesta, an alien planet bustling with flora and fauna but filled with dangers. The survivors start off separated in three groups: Azi and her robot companion Levi, Sam and Ursula, and the isolated Kamen. Airs on HBO Max and Amazon Prime StackTV.

The animation and concepts are beautiful and original, and the story, while straight forward, was contemplative yet gripping, and really hit the spot for me, I loved it. 5/5. Worth owning a copy, just to support this type of effort and content. Let me know if any of you have been quietly enjoying this as well. Here's some of the artwork:

I added this to my watchlist after reading your post, paisley, and yesterday I started watching it. It's horrifying and fascinating and beautiful all at once, I love it. I will finish the last two episodes this evening. The animation and the nature/landscape (and so many other things, actually) remind me so much of an indie game I played earlier this year called Sable. If you enjoy this show, AND enjoy indie games, you should definitely check that game out.

@ellkay, LuC, Lighton Merry Christmas, glad you all checked it out. It's a highlight of 2023, for sure. I watched the trailer for Sable, very similar artistic style, looks like a deep story as well, cool, I'll put it down as a maybe.

Finished season 1/ the show. Kinda depressing at times, but it's a great show! I rate it 8.4/10. It's based on Scavengers (2019)

And let's hope this becomes reality: In chatting with co-executive producers Sean Buckelew and James Merrill, we here at ComicBook.com were able to talk with them about the possibility of a sequel. To start things off, we asked James if they could foresee a return to the universe of Scavengers Reign via a spin-off and/or sequel following the first season's arrival on MAX, "Oh absolutely. I do feel like we tried to tell a complete story, not a puzzle box that tries to lure people back. That being said, we do have some big ideas as to what could come next. I hope that we get to do it because we want to explore what comes next. We only saw a little bit of the planet."

If it was a 60 minute show I might have. But 12 shows at 30 minutes or less? Sounds more like an old Dominoes Pizza add I was not even moved by the trailer. I am glad you enjoyed it, but it is not my cup of tea. Main reason for me, is the style of animation.

The style used to be a criteria for me, now I just give it a try and see if it works for me. I found out that the style isn't really relevant if the story(-telling) is great.

@inkblot It's not for everyone. Scavengers Reign is to anime, what Tales from the Loop is to live action TV. They are incredibly similar in style, subject, pacing, and mood. It's a contemplative story unlike your typical crunchyroll anime filled with fight scenes, like you're not going to see Rock Lee drop the weights, but if you stick with it, it might terrify, horrify, and gross you out. A video game would be the best medium to expand this story and engage the right viewers, especially as the robot ▼Spoiler becoming humanized or planetized, so to speak, like you could go through levels that give you upgrades from the planet that teach you more about the planet... I'd play it, until it freaked the crap outta me, lolz.

It is not really a criteria for me. Certain cartoons give me headaches. Like
South Park, early Simpsons etc. So I avoid them.
