Season 1 spoilers. ▼Spoiler I've said it before and I'll say it again, the book was really short, so some of the biggest differences were the dialogue between the crew fleshing them out as characters more. Most of the changes were really minor. The sec unit that got stomped by the ship for example was actually shot by Mensa's team. They didn't get a random survivor either who ends up betraying them, so that character and that kill by Murderbot totally weren't in the story. Sadly that was a big character change for Murderbot too when he stated he said he enjoyed killing her. At no point in the books does Murderbot ever express anything other than disdain for killing outside of when it has to happen, then it's really more cold detachment. Anyways. At the end there were 2 more differences one major and the other minor. The minor is really minor so I'll skip it. The major is that Murderbot never had his mind erased, and Gorathan was never the hero. In fact in later books he's still kind of a dick to Murderbot. Which brings me to the conclusion that these changes were mostly actually really really good changes. The overall story is beat for beat what happens in the books with mostly minor deviations and a few huge ones that are, IMO really good choices for the story actually, it made for a much more dramatic wrap up than in the books for sure.

DisaPOOOIINNNTED! 2 eps in and this one seems to be some sort of box-ticking affirmative-action stock photo come to life. The crew = 2 black ones, the Indian, the 2 unattractive asian lesbians. They have their boring, boring conversations as the actual MurderBot stands in the corner like an ornament. NO MURDERS YET ffs. Not even a hint of intrigue or gravitas or dialogue repartee. I think this one might have been written by an AI and the whole show is some sort of ironic experiment as to how long it takes we the audience to work this facet out... Cutting bait here. I hope the MurderBot glitches out and murders the whole crew, one-by-one, Alien style. Each episode 1 painfully dull crew member is savagely hunted and murdered right in their bland stupid face. Now that's a goddamn TV drama.

I wasn't blown away by it either. I mean, it's ok, but here in the office at the moment I am listening to someone going on about it and recommending it to others, saying he's read all 7 books, listened to the audio books, yawn, yawn, yawn. Is it the best TV show I've ever watched? Nope. Best one this year? Nope. In the top 10 this year? Hmmm, possibly, possibly not. Top 20 though.

My son read all the books this show is based on. So when the show was avaible to us, we watched it.
It is great to see how a show can stay close to the book, and still invent through the choice of design, acting and editing in a good way without destroying the feeling of the source.
We enjoyed it a lot. THe dark comedy is there, the "I dont give a f..." attitude is refreshing for the people who hasnt read the book, and the acting of murderbot himself is just spot on.
But is it for everyone? Not at all. You have to love dark comedy. People who loved Good Omens the tvseries will be right at home, as long as the like a scifi setting. :-)

Art is more like HAL3000 than anything else. Hopefully he gets killed in Sanctuary Moon. Steve Buschemi has to be another Sanctuary Moon choice... I for the life of me can't think of what character from book 2 he'd even play.

Major book spoilers. ▼Spoiler Nah book 2 he was still checking newsfeeds and getting news on his old crew while investigating his mass murder mining incident, and posing as a security contractor and helping the people who contracted him giving him his work permit to be on the mining station. So it makes sense his old crew is still in this and I suspect they'll deviate from the books and show more of what's going on with them. He does rejoin his crew in book 4 though. Book 6 since the books are not in perfect chronological order is entirely him protecting Mensah from assassination attempts and helping Preservation security investigate a murder. Book 5 him and his original crew get kidnapped by ART to help rescue it's crew. Book 7 he helps his original crew convince an independent colony to NOT join the corporation that's trying to get them to give them a planet. Book 8 he's trying to help save a former Corporate defector and save their family as well, with his original crew and ART and ART's crew, and the freed sec unit from book 5 that goes by Three. I kind of wonder if they're going to attempt to condense book 2 and 3 into a single season to get him back to the crew faster. They could alternatively just expand and show more of what the crew was up to while separated from Murderbot. That would kind of be excellent for worldbuilding, as the books don't really show life inside the corporate rim too much, just talk about it. I also just now realized there's a member of the original crew who was written out of the show entirely because he retired from exploration entirely after book one and is only mentioned again briefly in book 4. Murderbot thought he was the only sensible human. Also, I just hate Patton Oswalt's voice. For some reason it just grates on me. As much as I liked Happy! him voicing the imaginary character just was... yeah. It's also just a complaint because he's done a lot of voicework and I don't think his voice would fit ART.

I think we all hope for more expansion of the universe. First season was 5 hours of content out of 3 hours of source material (going by the duration of the audio books) - and we all still wanted more more more. Combining stories that involve the same characters (old crew) makes sense from a production standpoint because you want to utilize those actors to their fullest while you're paying them.

That's how you know Murderbot is a good story though. My only complaints in the show/books is that I WANT MORE. Yeah... they already said they're going to condense book 2,3,4 into the next season, or elements of them. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Spoilers. ▼Spoiler Book 2 was him investigating what happened at the mining facility which happened at a mining planet. While there he helps a team that was developing methods to search for alien remnants. Which is what GreyCris is all about illegally mining. Instead of him going to a terraforming facility to uncover illegal mining, as he did in book 3 he could easily visit a GreyCris mining site on the same planet he's investigating his incident, and get the evidence that they were illegally mining alien elements there. You'd be either dropping Miki and Dr. Rho as characters, but since they only appear in book 3 and never again it's not a huge plot point. Or you could include them somehow, but given the casting announcement, I doubt it. I already can tell who the new team of humans are based on the cast. Then have Mensa getting kidnapped at the end of the season triggering Murderbot's return. I really really hope they don't condense all of book 4 into season 2, but it is very, very possible to condense books 2 and 3 and not lose anything narratively, because you're right, it's like 2-3 hours of audiobook in content. These are novellas, not full on books. They don't become books until book 5 and beyond. Again though you don't have to condense anything. You could show his original crew bumbling around the Corporate Rim, being watched/hunted by GreyCris agents, because that's literally what was happening in the books, they just kinda casually mention it when Murderbot meets back up with them. Their time apart could be used for some serious worldbuilding into the Corporate Rim that we never got in the books. Especially since Gorathin was such a nothing character in the books, have them help him with some meltdown or relapse into using drugs again, or being apart of some corporate intrigue from his past or something. That is kinda the main difference between the books and the show. The other characters are sooo much more fleshed out. Pin-Lee being the corporate lawyer becomes a much more prominent character in the books though.

To be honest that's a huge improvement on the books. He mentions and talks about all these shows (he starts branching out into shows like World Hoppers and... I forget the name of the medical show), but we never got to see them, just heard Sanctuary Moon described as slightly cheeseball and unrealistic, but good. I absolutely love that they're showing the show and are using such huge name actors to create a parody.

I read all the books some time ago. I absolutley loved them all.
Is the tv series better? No. Is the book series better? no. They come to us via radically different mediums. Trying to compare probably has more to do with the medium you prefer I loved the books, I loved the TV series. I enjoyed them both. Today most of the folks who are aware of Murderbot only watch TV, They never learned to read. I am glad they got the chance to get into murderbot. It is subtle and lovely. Maybe not enough explosions and multiverses to get through the fog but I feel lucky to have experienced them. Ok I put in that last part to tease a bit. (Just playen). It's a free world. Reading is an option. I urge you all to give it a try though it really cool! (Just playen) If you haven't tried it yet it's probably to late. Stick to TV. Hey amigo's I love tv also. (not playen)
