I agree I was not expecting that. An excellent episode.

Well, it's pretty closely following the game, so it had to.

2020.  Meh.

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

Episode 2 was overall really good, but the major plot point of the episode wasn't handled very well imho.

Spoiler

The best scene was probably when Abby was running from the mob and she was crawling behind/under that fence. It's a small scene but I thought it was perfectly done with the fence slowly giving in.

The mob itself...I don't know - that mob was basically on their lawn. I mean they are patrolling that area daily so I can't imagine such a massive force is burried underneath all of that snow so close to the town. They would've had to accumulate before the snow or slowly over time during the snow.

I never played the games but I knew that Joel was going to die since that sparked a lot of controversy in the gaming community.
I get that it had to happen and why - it was a passing of the torch for the show from Joel to Ellie and a great way to push her character development ahead.

But this also means that this was Joel's last episode...and it certainly didn't feel like a goodbye episode for him. We will probably see more in the next episode when they get back to town but still, but this will only be the reaction of the other characters to his death and maybe some flashbacks.

The focus of this Episode should've been on Joel.

At the beginning they could've shown Dina and Joel, with Dina trying to mend the rift between Ellie and Joel. That's why the both of them went on patrol together.

When they had him cornered in the Lodge, Joel didn't try anything at all to try and safe himself - I get that he felt guilty when Abby told him that he killed her father - but still, he does have people to live for so he should've at least tried to fight or talk his way out of there. But no, nothing at all.

And they didn't show the moment when Jesse came into the Lodge...the first person to come from the outside and see Joel dead - that is something that should not have happened off-screen.

So looking at it as the final episode for Joel, this was rather disappointing.

Shows that deserved more runtime:
Abbys | Dead Like Me | Devs | Firefly | Gangsta. | Jack of all Trades | Kevin (probably) saves the World | Lodge 49 | Mrs. Davis | NYC 22 | Powerless | Roadkill | Special Unit 2 | Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi | Stumptown | Surface | The Brave | The Company You Keep | The Crazy Ones | The Finder | The Middleman | Truth Seekers | Two Weeks to Live | Whiskey Cavalier

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

Yeah, pretty rough episode. As someone who didn’t play the games, kind of unexpected.

Anyway, was happy to see the series doesn’t develop into an obnoxious teen drama… I had my doubts in Ep1.

Spoiler

Yeah, the defenses against the mob was kind of laughable…. Why not spiked and oil filled moat? How come a single big beastly can crush the wall? Metal reinforcements no needed?

And by the way, what was the point now with the fungus in the pipe?

True, and, thinking about it some more, also

Spoiler

I would've used the Lodge as a manned Outpost, it would've given the town an early warning system for an approaching hoard - at least in summer times.

The flamethrowers were also a waist as they were used. Apart from the big guy, every regular infected can be taken down with a bullet to the head which is much faster and efficient than burning them to a crisp.

Speaking of the big guy, the moment Tommy saw him approaching he immediately went for "they are breaking through" instead of telling his people to focus fire on him?? If big guy would've been taken down or even weakened before hitting the wall there wouldn't have been a breach.

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

Ep3... filler episode. Not much happening... Somehow I feel, they could have just told all of that in 10 minutes.

Anyway,... while I liked Bella Ramsey/Ellie in season 1, somehow she doesn't work for me in season 2. Just annoying childish brat, which was appropriate for the first season. But she didn't grow up into the role in season 2. And it seems she only has one facial expression

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

For what they showed on screen it was a good episode, but they left out a lot of stuff which I think would've been important to see.

Spoiler

What they showed from the emotional impact on Ellie was not enough. And I wanted to see some regret in her for the way she acted towards Joel's the last days she had with him...

They should've also shown the reaction of people in town when they realized Ellie + Dina were gone.
Now that they are already in Seattle the next episode would be too late for that.

That group of people that got killed before Seattle...added nothing to the episode.

Considering the trip from Jackson, Wymoning to Seattle by horse is more than a month (according to google) they should've shown a lot more from their trip...at least some encounters with Infected...

This Episode made me actually think that they are done with the Infected and continue to pure human vs. human fights, this would be very disappointing.

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

S02E01 was a mind blower. It reminds me of Game of thrones. (spoiler alert) The last episode of S01, Ned Stark gets his Head chopped off!!!  How could it go on? But it did (albeit a lame ending episode). I think it's very cool to make us a bit uncomfortable because we can't be sure that we know what will happen next. It takes guts and skill to do it. Bravo to "The Last of Us"!

I agree but I also see signs of the change in E03, hopefully they will drop that nonsense. It that didn't make any sense anyway.

Video games have writers too who write the story, not just movies and tv shows. Sometimes video games have even the better writers and better stories.
So nothing to be disappointed about if you liked it, good writers wrote the story and it was faithfully adapted in this case smile

That's a good point. I stopped playing video games seriously about 1995. I was thinking that it was all about graphics, flashing lights, explosions just point and shoot stuff. But since I have no real experience my conclusion is suspect at the very least. I stand corrected.

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

This comment isn't specifically aimed at 'The Last of Us' but since i'm going off this series (as well as 'Andor') something occurred to me.
It's been in the news recently about tariffs on Movies/TV, and one reason behind this (as detailed by a US filmmaker on Sky news I think it was) is that a lot of content is now being made outside the US, simply because the US has become so expensive.
As a result of this, budgets are perhaps not stretching as far as they used to, and maybe cutbacks are playing a part too, but I get the sense that stuff just isn't as good as it used to be.
Maybe it's just me?

Some games (not all) have "proper" stories now, it's changed so much over the last 30 years.  Some have enough "meat" to be made into movies or TV shows but most don't.

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

Episode 4 was awesome, really enjoyed it.

The chemistry between the two characters was great in this one.
I also like that Seattle is a slow burner, you get to see bits and pieces before the whole shebang is going to be revealed.

Spoiler

Going inside the train instead of running on top if to begin with. Stupid but believable - in the heat of the moment.

I kinda missed a snarky comment about her being pregnant after they woke up.

And now I can't wait to find out who the "scars" are and who "she" is.

If you use this episode as basis for the entire season and tweak the beginning a little bit, the story could've been so much better:

Spoiler

- Abby and Joel have nothing to do with each other, she never came to Jackson.
- The attack of the infected is a lot worse than we got to see.
- Joel + Dina and Ellie + Jesse are still on patrol.
- Ellie + Jesse make it back to support the effort to safe the town.
- Jesse + everyone else dies.
- Ellie is the last survivor in Jackson
- In the nick of the time Joel + Dina make a heroic rescue and Joel dies while saving Ellie.
- With everything gone Ellie + Dina decide to leave Jackson and head out
- They come across Seattle and stark exploring.
- Episode 4 happens

Not quite imho, but still a great episode smile

Spoiler

I didn't like that they somehow felt like they needed to wait for Ellie to shine until the end. Up until they split up she was rather useless. I wanted to see her go wild in that warehouse, but she went down far too quickly. In short, the balance between her and Dina could've been better.

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

Episode 6 would've made a great Episode 3, but as 2x6 it felt completely out of place. Especially since we have only one Episode left in the Season.

Other than that, the first half of the episode was probably what many people were waiting for (including me). The second half was, in a specific way, completely unnecessary.

Spoiler

Seriously, was it necessary to make Joel look homophobic when he caught Ellie with the other girl?

The broken promise also felt unnecessary, I think in a situation like that you would be able to tell when he is beyond the point of saving.

And then the waterworks at the end...why did they have to do Joel like that...they should've shown him resolut in his decision, he even said he would do it all over again - why not show that...

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

Yeah... 2x6 was the weakest episode for me.

Re: The Last of Us [Drama, Adventure, Thriller, Horror]

That is what I have been saying all along. When seasons are this short, filler episodes suck.
