Spoiler alert, Russians call a viking a viking, not varyag, which is some ancient term used by linguists and a dictionary. Especially some mercenaries group like Wagner. Plus no American would have such nickname. Starting with the fact that "varyag" is another word no American can pronounce properly And ending with the fact that they there in their white power circles are sensitive to cultural appropriations - such nickname probably would have somebody with Scandinavian roots

Edit: by ep5 it's already hilarious facepalm squared, "son of dark blue", lmao. Not counting that it's a total nonsense, even the meaning is wrong, that word means just blue, not dark blue. Also again sprinkled "comrades" on top, nobody is calling anybody "a comrade". The only place where you can hear that, is American fantasies, lol. I have followed a lot of these mercenaries online activity irl, have not seen a single time that they would use "comrade". Also searched old articles to check how Russians called that computer and of course they did not even translate it - either used English name or simply wrote English name in Cyrillic So, no matter how hard you would try to explain this word play to some mercenary, it would not make sense to anybody except this show writers - not counting that change a shade of that blue a bit and you risk calling Viking a gay in slang, lol. But in current form I can bet that first association with that name would not be chess, but that you want to call his father an alcoholic, because "синя" (first part of his nickname) means a drunk in RU slang Blue is not the color you want to mess with in Russian lang
