Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

I think I am done, I just find this show ... boring? I am just not into it.

I found myself skipping through half of it anyway in the last couple of episodes.

GoT vs LotR , I choose GoT, it keeps me engaged at least.

well you will be glad there is season 2 to wait for.

It is a show to watch if you have nothing else that day?

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

so the show is now over.

Spoiler

Am I right in thinking the 3 silvery people thought that the big hairy guy was Sauron but in fact he is Gandalf? And that the pretend king is in fact Sauron?

A better end than I thought there would be

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

108, quite a subversive end, mildly engaging.  I would've edited out more of the harfoot story though, it dragged on needlessly.

@Nightcrow, did you marathon this yet?

My question is who are they?

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

My guess is they may be elves who betrayed their kind by serving Sauron, some kind of early dark elf.

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Brilliant! What an excellent series. Me and the wife thoroughly enjoyed it. No unneccecary ridiculous gory violence (like GOT-House of the Donkey), just good storytelling, as it should be.

I'm glad they renewed it for another season. For all the nay-saysers, if you don't like it, stop watching it, like i did with House of the Donkey after Ep 3 or 4.

Simples!

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

I love it! I like a good story build up and character development. this first season is setting the stage. I, too, enjoy that it isn't full of gratuitous sex and violence and is letting a story unfold.

As long as they don't screw up the story for Tom Bombadill, I can handle everything they are going to make.
Always loved the mystery around him, if they are gonna create a story around him it has to be Tolkien-level good.

Shows that deserved more runtime:
Abbys | Dead Like Me | Devs | Firefly | Gangsta. | Jack of all Trades | Kevin (probably) saves the World | Lodge 49 | Mrs. Davis | NYC 22 | Powerless | Roadkill | Special Unit 2 | Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi | Stumptown | Surface | The Brave | The Company You Keep | The Crazy Ones | The Finder | The Middleman | Truth Seekers | Two Weeks to Live | Whiskey Cavalier

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Season 2, Episode 1....it was OK. Certainly, better than I expected.

Spoiler

I didn't like Gil'Galad in the first season, but in this Episode he was a lot closer to my expectations for the High King of the Noldor.
Nori & Gandalfs journey is good, gives me a bit of a Mandalorian Season 1-vibe. I loved that the song played into their journey - great decision.
Galadriel has imho improved over Season 1 in this episode.
Cirdan indeed gives off the vibe of someone old & wise.
Sauron is acting too much like a human and not a Maia.
Didn't like Elrond in Season 1 and hasn't changed so far for season 2.

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

Decided to go ahead and watch Episode 2 right away...some good parts, some less so.

Spoiler

When someone like Gil'galad uses words like "It is said that the deceiver (Sauron)...blah blah" my cringe-meter goes to an 11/10.
The people talking here are two of the oldest elves in middle-earth, who were born and raised among the Valar and Maiar. If at all, they are the people who "say things"...not the other way around.
Minor detail, but dialogue like that pisses me off...

With Galadriel I think the creators listened too much to the critics and toned her down too much. She is way to subordinate which doesn't compare to her in Season 1 at all.
I get that some fans weren't happy with her demeanor but changing her in Season 2 like that is just making it worse.

The dwarves story...I don't get it. So their light tunnels collapse and they are worried about crops. Fair enough. But they still have communication and travel to the surface available? So whats the problem?

The Dark Wizard (according to imdb) calls Gandalf an Istar...either they are suggesting this isn't the first time someone from Valinor was sent to intervene or that dude came up with the phrase himself.
Then Sauron tells Celebrimbor that he practically is an Istar...but without using the word. So neither Sauron nor Celebrimbor know the term.

Galadriel and Elrond...this relationship just gets worse and worse storywise. Don't forget that at some point he will marry her daughter...

So far, my favorite part of Season 2 is still Gandalf and the Hobbits(!) journeying across the desert. Absolutely love them.

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

S2x1,2,3 - Great music and sets, but the story has never convinced me that this is the fantasy of Tolkien.  Not immersed.  Still a 6/10 for me.

The bit I hated were the munchkins

Re: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

I agree with all of you.

But the scenery is to die for. And I love the Dwarves.

And the Elves are really hard on the R's.

Couldn't agree more.
Bear McCreary is a top-notch composer. Is use the scores for both Black Sails and The Rings of Power as relaxation music smile

I gave up on this coming close to Tolkien-level storytelling with this show. It's ok-ish fantasy and it won't get any better. As I said before, for me, they just can't screw up Tom Bombadill, that's where I'm gonna draw the line.

Episode 3 - was boring..nothing of real significance happened here.

Spoiler

Isildur escaping the spiders was boring...we all knew he had to escape.
The dwarfs are still struggling for food.... even though THEY CAN LEAVE THE MOUNTAIN !...and it's not like the don't have anything to trade.
The dwarfs giving more Mithril to the elves....we all knew it was going to happen.

The eagle...that was just stupid.... Yeah sure Manwe would sent an eagle to alter a political struggle.... Tolkien's work is all about bloodlines - an eagle would've never been sent for something like that and it obviously didn't happen like that in the Silmarilion.
And I don't think Pharazon would be able to manipulate an eagle in anyway.

I think this is the only show that I watch for all the wrong reasons. As explained in previous posts, by other members, this show is not really that good.

But I do enjoy a lot of the characters, the music and scenery are simply outstanding. And of course the title. Lord Of The Rings.

So for me it is an enjoyable 1 hour escape. I would love to live wherever this is filmed. Not in Mordor of course.
