Re: Tokyo Vice [Crime, Drama, Thriller]
Watched 1x1. A solid show! Everything Japanese seems to be portrayed correctly. Will continue watching. ▼Spoiler A solid show, but not a perfect show - I saw two small errors: the dead guy with the knife in his chest showed a little bit of muscle movement (under his eye; I really wonder why they didn't fix that digitally), and when Jake came home, the window was open (which surprised me)... and he was then shown opening exactly that window a few seconds later.

Re: Tokyo Vice [Crime, Drama, Thriller]
I'm liking it pretty well, it's entertaining. Was annoyed that they had an American lead giving a clinic on why everyone dislikes Americans ▼Spoiler e.g. 'did you get that tattoo the old way?' but then saw in the credits it was based on a book by an American so less annoyed now.

Why didn't you like him asking that in 1x1?

It felt natural for an annoying American to ask, yes. And the reaction was appropriate as well.

I don't mind when foreigners (or even tourists from a different part of the country) ask me weird or silly questions, and I'm sure I've asked questions that were perceived similarly in other countries!

It's not that I thought it was silly, just condescending.

Interesting, I didn't get a condescending vibe.

Re: Tokyo Vice [Crime, Drama, Thriller]
Not sure about this one e1 I felt was a bit convoluted and contrived and was the typical stereotype of a white person interacting with Japanese culture. I will give e2 a try but may well drop it.

Everything I saw was correct (based on everything I know about the country, which is a lot but not everything ).

Re: Tokyo Vice [Crime, Drama, Thriller]
1x7 Again a good episode, but with only the season finale left, this show REALLY needs at least one more season!

Yeah, I was pretty sure something like that was about to happen, and it was satisfying to see that it did.

Season 1 finale: many things happened, but not enough to not renew the show for season 2! I hope it'll happen.

Still highly recommended! It's a quality show when I never think that something looks totally unrealistic or that a scene could have been acted better.

2x8. Another episode with superb acting. It looks like the main story arc could be coming to an end over the final two episodes (for this season), but even if it does, I hope the show gets renewed.

Re: Tokyo Vice [Crime, Drama, Thriller]
Somehow, I missed this show.... probably I thought "just another procedural crime show, and then in Tokyo.... *meh*". Or it didn't register at all. Just saw the first 2 episodes of season 01 and it is awesome! Love it!

Re: Tokyo Vice [Crime, Drama, Thriller]
Impressive and interesting facts first:
▼Spoiler One of the executive producers = Jake Adelstein Wikipedia Jake Adelstein If you don't know the show, the main character is Jake Adelstein! ... and the show is (very loosely) based on a true story Did you watch it already? Did you remember the first 5min of S01E01? A scene that ended with "Two years earlier"? I missed/forgot it in S01! Well it is in fact resumed - and actually quite seamlessly!
▼Spoiler This scene is resumed at the last quarter of S02E08! That's 16 episodes á 50+min later! seamlessly! Imo this shows quite well how exceptional and detailed this shows script is!
Is this show worth watching?
This is a clear: YES! This show is a very strong 4★, with many 5★ highlights!
What is the show about?
This is NOT a "Police Show"! This is NOT an episodical show! It's one BIG movie-drama-crime-thriller, spanning over 2 seasons so far! This is a high quality drama show about a young foreign journalist in Tokyo, challenging the yakuza! Challenged by racism, a hard and overly career oriented life, and soon by very hard choices! You will see very detailed characters of press, police, yakuza and closely related persons and families - mostly in a very realistic and quite "grey" context... Technics are exquisite, especially since you will see a lot of scenes in a lively bustling Tokyo at day and night - and light and sound are still masterfully executed! You can "feel" Tokyo! The show is bilingual in japanese and english but mostly in japanese. The acting is superb! And not only the from the main actors!
Similar shows? If you like Slow Horses or Giri/Haji, then this is for you! I have searched for other similar high quality and non-episodic crime shows, but this seems to be rather unique ... in a very good way This is maybe somewhat similar: The Recruit, anyone knows other similar shows?
How is S01?
S01 is fast engaging and starts with a big bang, followed by a season of deep character and story building. You will see the main character slowly grow, and you see other characters joining him in his life and quest. Thrilling drama, with a very realistic and intense angle on Tokyo's culture, organized crime and night life! Since S01 ended and the story was more like only chapter 1 of a bigger book, i wasn't sure how to rate it, because it needed at least a S02 to make sense... Cliffhanger? Yes indeed!
How is S02?
Carefully optimistic i started to watch S02 - would it be es good as S01? Well S02 starts slow, with a somewhat changed context due to the events in S01. But it seamless resumes S01. Mid season it gains massive intensity and builds up for a -to be expected?- dramatacally eventful S03. Despite one REALLY disgustingly annoying character (you will know who i mean), this season definitely keeps the high-quality and maybe even ups it a bit! E07 and following explode pure 5★-drama-content into your face, especially E09! Will there be a Cliffhanger? I assume yes, indeed! A BIG one! Cant wait for E10 and already fear the 1-year wait for S03! Or will they conclude all of it next episode ?!?! Dont think so - hmm don't HOPE so ! I want S02 be like chapter 2! But would S03 then be the finale?

Re: Tokyo Vice [Crime, Drama, Thriller]
Yes, hands down one of the best drama/crime/thrillers of the last decade. And made it from "never heard about it" to my absolute number #1. Binged both seasons last few days, can't wait for S02 finale! I don't think I was so engaged and looking forward to the next episode since 24 (the better seasons like 3-5) or Prison Break (mostly season 01 and parts of 02)

Yeah, I'm totally looking forward to the next season! The (2x10) season finale was mostly satisfying, but it felt a bit like a show finale... Let's hope it gets renewed ASAP.

Yes, I liked that they really concluded the story while leaving room to tell another story at some point. So, I would not need to live with a huge cliffhanger and wonder how things would resolve if there would never be a season 03. In general the finale was not super strong... felt a bit rushed at moments like "oh, we only have 20 minutes left.... wrap it up, gents!" and some of the careful pacing and story telling which made the show so strong, was watered down a bit. So for me a bit anti-climatic ending of the story and not the strongest episode of the show. Nevertheless, a great show overall and - as you said - a mostly satisfying ending I can live with
