Avatar: The Last Airbender is the reimagined live-action take on acclaimed animated series. The story is set in a world divided into four nations, each populated by different kinds of elemental "benders": Earthbenders, Waterbenders, Firebenders and Airbenders, and focuses on a young Airbender named Aang, who becomes the Avatar, a one in a generation bender who can master all four elements.

Alternative summaries

Netflix, IMDB/Amazon, TVDB:
A young boy known as the Avatar must master the four elemental powers to save the world, and fight against an enemy bent on stopping him.

Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender 2024 [Netflix Fantasy/Advent./Drama/Action]

I could not resist - still watching the show, but the experience is so "discombobulated", that i need to share yikes hmm yikes

Discombobulated?

Yeah... i had to search a fitting word, not sure its the right one - but why?
IMO ep01 is quite terrible, rushed, superficial, really bad dialogues, mostly bad acting, light is terrible - directing is "off".
Surprisingly ep02 is much better, some good acting, better light, drama and atmosphere, directing seem much better but its the same director.
It goes on like that:
One scene is nearly terrible to watch, superficial, rushed, really bat dialogues, extremely rough characters...
... and the next scene is actually really good, and you will even see quite good acting and some dialogues had real depth and meaning... hmm roll hmm

And then... suddenly there are scenes that hold great insight, character actions and deeper meanings... WTF?!

Is it worth watching?

ohhh... i am sooooo conflicted here.
The world is mostly really well made, but sometimes its trashy.
All special effect so far, were great, CGI is top notch, creatures are great, it seems there was a lot of budget!

The rest? Seems to depend on the scene, this show has some great moments!
But you might have an overwhelming urge to "fast forward" every 2nd/3rd or 4th scene.

For me - at the moment (ep06) the good scenes are topping the bad ones and i mostly enjoy the show, but the bad scenes are sometimes so bad, characters are so trashy, annoying, inconsistent and unbelievable  - it sometimes makes me even angry, my solution: the option to "fast forward" yikes

This reminds me strongly of the "harry Potter" movies:
I really REALLY! like the books, but the movies were so unbelievable awful (especially compared to the books), rushed disconnected scenes with no life or holistic viewing experience, i really respected Rowling for the books before, but her involvement in the movies and the terrible results changed my mind, sadly.
But this show is in many ways the same:
... rushed! rushed! rushed! Seldom character developments/quality but lots of character quantity. See on IMDB how many roles had only one episode and how little had more... could have been done better!

So if you like fantasy or fantastic worlds with good special effects with some quite EPIC action scenes and maybe don't mind the trashy scenes, go watch smile

Maybe the next season will be better and comes with more consistent good quality?
Maybe budget-shuffeling might help? Less rush with a couple of more episodes and better script with a fantastic world but with maybe a little less budget for special effects and action...?

... wonder how your experiences were/are ^^

... how does it end?

Spoiler

yikes  CLIFFHANGER ... deluxe yikes

Yeah... After only watching 1x1, I got mixed feelings about this one. I expected something awesome, and only got a good show will a huge child/ young-adult cast. (There also were adults. cool) Hmm!

I wonder if I - since not being familiar with the source material - just had the wrong expectation or if Netflix is to blame (once again).

Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender 2024 [Netflix Fantasy/Advent./Drama/Action]

While I've heard about Avatar before (initially I thought people were referring to the James Cameron movie)  and have a vague understanding its a mix of martial arts and magic and there are element "benders" I've never really seen anything. I "think" I may have seen part of a a terrible movie a few years ago but honestly dont remember anything about that except maybe the fire benders boats, they seemed familiar somehow?

Anyway, I thought I would watch the first ep and see what I thought.

I REALLY enjoyed it, quickly watched 2 & 3 and am looking forward to the rest.

So as someone with no investment or knowledge of the franchise, I think this is great and I hope they continue into a S2 (if thats even possible, I have no idea if he saves the world in S1 and thats it, although I think the cartoon series went for a few years?

That would most likely be this movie. It was the first attempt at making a live action adaption. Pretty much everyone considered it bad. This image is actually from that movie, not this show:

Three seasons. Water, earth and fire respectively. Completed story. We'll see if Netflix can do that much at least.

The original AtlA show actually ran a few years before the Cameron movies and was relatively well-known at the time. Giving the movies that name was... a choice. Legend of Korra was a sequel show to Last Airbender and takes place several decades later, starring the next incarnation of the titular Avatar (meaning after Aangs death). It wasn't quite as popular as the original but is also usually well-regarded. It really helps to have watched the original first, though.

I only watched the original cartoon (not anime) a few years ago and, for those who haven't, it's good. Really good.

This new show has been referred to (by the makers) as "a remix, not a remake" or something like that. It's true. A lot of scenes are pretty much exact adaptions, but sometimes things are shuffled around and the pacing is different. A lot of the regular fluff was dropped. Still, 2 episodes in, a decent adaption so far.

I've read reviews saying that it seems like the cast took some time to get into the roles and dynamics. If the episodes weren't entirely filmed out of order, that might line up with our observations. Also speaks well for the quality of a possible S2...

Having watched the first 6 episodes now, my early opinion sadly was confirmed. Only a 7/10 from me.

I've watched through the Avatar series (original + Korra) twice. Korra honestly isn't anything special. The original Avatar series however is a masterpiece. Great character development, writing, animation etc. I was pleasantly surprised by the Netflix series because I was expecting a M. Night Shyamalan debacle again (terrible live action remake movie). And lets be real, Netflix live action remakes are rarely good. Still doesn't hold a candle to the character development in the original animation. Can't recommend the original enough. Great for all ages. It aired on Nikelodeon over a decade ago, so kids can watch it. There is a whole subgenre of videos on youtube dedicated to character analysis.

They have done a great job with the live action version of the Avatar, the Last Airbender. Never expected to see anyone pull that off.

Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender 2024 [Netflix Fantasy/Advent./Drama/Action]

No lie, I like wept throughout watching it howwwwever it was lowkey sexist [compared to the original] and pulled most of the nuance out in about every situation... despite have a longer runtime the the original animated series. So-yeah... IDK about anyone else, I just know I'll never watch any of this version again. Sure, it's not offensive the way the movie adaptation was but when you have gold why grab at some copper!

Annnnd, for what it's worth, I legit rewatch some AtLA on the regularly, that'll just never be the case for this.

That being as it is, I'll likely watch the next season... but NETFLIX really needs to up their game on this live-action if they want folks coming back for all three seasons.
