Re: Worst TV show turned movie(s)?

...I don't think Serenity was anywhere near what it should have been...it was okay...but they butchered a lot of things that made the show totally awesome. In the film, things were more clean and crisp and star-trek-ish, not gritty and under developed like a lot of the tv worlds. Plus, they killed off a bunch of favourite characters in cold empty ways....ways that are probably more realistic and what have you....just really empty. Shepherd Book was one of my favourites, and in the film his appearance and death was more or less a waste of screen time. He didn't serve a purpose that couldn't have been served by some other generic character.

...I mean, Serenity was still a decent movie....so it doesn't deserve the votes...especially with a failure like the Simpsons Movie to choose from...

...maybe Serenity was like tC's Aeon Flux experience...the only pair of show & film that the voter had seen? If that's the case, they voted irresponsibly methinks.

i totally agree with you as to the 'crisp' Star Trek-y nature of Serenity, and do feel it detracted from one of the things that made Firefly so godsdamn special, and as much as FOX were to blame for the "failure" of Firefly, you could hardly blame 'the suits' for pushing the film in this direction, and anybody who has done the featurettes/commentaries on the Firefly dvd can clearly see this was not something that came from a creative perspective... the film need to garner a new audience that hadn't seen the tv series, so to that extent i see that as a commercial means to an end, something that, these days really just needs to be accepted and ignored... so, yeah, that sucked, but it was easy to look past...

Serenity's only real flaw lies in the fact that it was too damn compressed... the plot was a monster and didn't really leave room for the character moments the way Firefly did, thus meaning that character motivations and such needed an outside force to motivate them. that is a problem, but again, given the medium and target audience, it was a necessary evil... so yeah, it sucked that they had to kill off Book & Wash the way they did... BUT... without those events... i mean, Wash's death is a perfect example... it's sole purpose was to bring Zoe out into the open and show just how badass she is... but fuck, anybody who knows the tv series already knew that... but given the monster plot etc, she doesn't really get to show that in the movie, thus needing that outside impetuous to drive her forward and give us a big-bang balls out action thing that the kids so do love these days...

where i have to disagree is your outlook on Book's death... if anything it was the one thing that pushed Mal's character right out into the open. Book was Mal's conscience, one of the few people he actually had a deep and true respect for... it was Book's cold and calculated execution that pushed him forwards to do the right thing for the greater good regardless of the personal sacrifice, something he [it seems] always had trouble doing...

it was, to me, Wash's death that was totally unnecessary...

i'm going to eat your brains and gain your memories...

Re: Worst TV show turned movie(s)?

you make good points.
Either way, it wasn't until the 2nd time that I watched it that I was able to really appreciate the movie. The first viewing left me pretty bitter...it was too compressed...the style was fudged...it lacked the character moments...it killed off great characters that shouldn't have been killed off....it didn't set itself up for a good sequel that could prolong the lives of some of the best characters that ever existed....

...the 2nd viewing came after some reflecting on why it was as it was...and suits be damned! they did what they could with it....but serving the show justice really wasn't on the agenda...

Re: Worst TV show turned movie(s)?

Yeah, but the chances for a sequel were pretty slim to begin with.  This was likely Joss's one shot at a Firefly movie, so the way I see it he didn't have any choice but to kill off a couple of the main characters.  Otherwise it just feels like a cheat.  They had to be in real danger, where good people get killed otherwise it loses all its credibility.

And there were plenty of character moments!!!  o.O  Jayne and his grenades, Kaylee and her battery operated gadgets, Mal and Inara with the uncomfortable talking by vid, Mal and Book talking about faith, River crying over Simon when he got hurt, Zoe's reaction to Wash...  I could seriously go on and on and on.  There was plenty in there that was recognisable as Firefly.

I saw it three times when it was at the cinema (the first time at its world premier at the Edinburgh Film Festival) and I just love every minute of it.

Re: Worst TV show turned movie(s)?

another thread turned to firefly discussion. Not that i'd mind, the show totally deserves it, one of the biggest mistakes in movie industry history was to cancel it mid-season. Absolutely loved it. I'd pay to see it again and that means a lot coming from a person such as myself.

Well, writing it according to the expectation that there wouldn't be a sequel, to me, caused Joss to cheat things to fit his expectations...thus compromising the credibility of the whole project...a little bit, anyway.

You do make good points...but they're only passable if you gloss over the fact that forcing an ending to it all like that was a huge injustice to the series...

...it's like, if you adopted a pet dog...and you found out that it just wasn't within your budget to keep him...and then, instead of letting him go live with someone else and never seeing him again, you shoot him.

There is no justice in ending something prematurely that was not ready for its end to come. The dog does not have to be put in real danger in order for you to keep your credibility...
