1932, Los Angeles. While the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong! Based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, this limited series follows the origins of American Fiction's most legendary criminal defense lawyer, Perry Mason. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason's relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.

This show is good, you should be able to recognise a ton of familiar faces here.

Wasn't sure to start with, but it's growing on me.
I liked Matthew Rhys from The Americans

DRM "manages access" in the same way that Prison "manages freedom".

Re: Perry Mason

There's this somewhat recent trend in TV shows to put titles or names (of places or people or buildings) into scenes (more or less) like they are physical objects (don't know how to explain it better).

In 1x4, the PERRY MASON title appeared behind legal secretary Della but in front of the car, so when she walked around the car she also walked around the title. Loved that! smile

Re: Perry Mason

ah Perry Mason wont they let old shows die. what next  77 Sunset Strip, Dr Kildare, Iron Side? I think they are hoping the people  who watched these are by now dead. I wonder how many of the scripts are reworked from those old shows? Easy way to get a new series without the cost of new ideas? ( eg the last version of the Flight of the Phoenix copied very closely the original )

Who cares as long as the result is good? They can rework any great show every x years for all I care. big_smile

Did you just want to let out some frustration or will you watch the show? cool

Yeah exactly - this is definitely a good show in its own right. Could've been named anything and it would still be an awesome show to watch.

Yay. smile

Somewhere else I read that the show has a LOT of viewers, more than others shows like https://next-episode.net/watchmen or https://next-episode.net/the-outsider! yikes

Re: Perry Mason

I get it is a reboot, sorta. I liked the original series because it was entertaining and Mason always won through some legal wizardy or some last second discovery.. Nothing about the origins of the characters. These characters are nothing like the original characters but then 50s-60s TV was really different story telling. Characters were not really allowed to be as flawed and broken as this group.

So far (4th S1E4) I am pretty hooked. Rhys is a good choice but I have to say it wasn't working at first. The girl who plays Della seems to carry the show a lot which also works. The other characters like Stephen Root, John Lithgow, Lili Taylor, Chris Chalk, Lupe Falcon, and Robert Patrick are all really good.

Honestly, I was worried that this would be just a bucket of disappointment like so many other reboots. This is really well done both in front of the camera and in the edits. I know that his is on a short line (8 episodes) but I am hoping for more goodness from this.

Fingers crossed..

I've not read any of the books, so I don't know if he started off as a P.I. before he became a lawyer, but I think this show is definitely a keeper.  Slow at first, but I'm a fan now.

Spoiler

One thing I think was a bit silly was how they showed him go from P.I to lawyer in about 2 minutes! The bar exam is not an easy thing to pass, and I don't think there's a fast-track way of studying for it, passing it and then being able to actually represent people in a trial. Maybe there was back then?

2020.  Meh.

Re: Perry Mason

1x7 was another quality episode!

Did you notice how smart they were regarding filming street scenes? They zoomed close enough to bigger buildings so that no modern buildings would be visible, and also decided not to show busy main roads, so they didn't have to put huge numbers of old vehicles there (not even mentioning issues with modern signage and traffic lights). smile

And @ graybags: yes, the bar exam was easier to pass back then for sure (same as other exams that have become way harder over time). I've enjoyed how that process was displayed, including the exact quality of his performance in front of a judge later on. smile
