Topic: Cocaine Bear

A film I want to see asap looks fun
"Cocaine Bear, a new film by Elizabeth Banks, tells the story of a 175-pound black bear who eats tons of cocaine and tears a Georgia forest apart"

Haha, thanks, adding it to my list ASAP! smile

Re: Cocaine Bear

Thank you merc, It's now on my list! My only suggestion is that it should have been set in British Columbia instead of Georgia so that the protagonist could be a grizzly instead of a black bear. "Say hello to my little friend!"

I actually don't watch any trailers for anything (if I can help it)... but I'm expecting a batshit-crazy movie the likes of which could be featured on the podcast How Did This Get Made. I just hope it delivers tongue

Re: Cocaine Bear

trust a serious newspaper to consider what cocaine does to a bear ( you might need  a paywalk breaker to read )

In 1994, a team of Nasa scientists started exploring an entirely new frontier: giving weed to spiders. Not just weed: the researchers subjected their spiders to a large amount of psychoactive drugs. Caffeine, marijuana, amphetamine, plus chloral hydrate, a sedative, for the comedown. To carry out the important work of getting spiders high, they’d developed an ingenious method. First you dissolve your drug of choice in a sugar solution, and then you inject it into the body of a dead fly. Tweezer the fly into a spider’s web, and wait for the tiny predator to pounce. And then you clear away the web, and see what your spider builds next.......

Images of their intoxicated webs still circulate online, and many of them are strangely beautiful. The spiders dosed with marijuana will tend to weave the inner part of their webs as normal, before stumbling into a comfortable stupor some time before finishing the job. Benzedrine webs are frantic and twitchy; the spider will complete one section, before apparently darting off to start all over again somewhere else, leaving large gaps entirely unfilled. But my favourite might be the webs spiders make on LSD. Spiders midway through a profound acid experience produce perfect, mathematically even radial spokes—but no actual web. Just a glorious, useless sunburst. Maybe the spiders had encountered God........

A few drug-taking animals can assume almost mythic proportions. In 2013, a feral pig broke into a campsite in rural Australia, drank 18 beers, tore through the bins, got in a fight with a cow, and then fell asleep under a tree. For this feat, the pig briefly became a kind of folk hero; the Australians, who tend to do this sort of thing, named him “Swino”. (There was something close to a moment of national mourning a month later, when Swino was found dead by a roadside after having been hit by a truck...........)

Re: Cocaine Bear

one telegraph reviewer gives it a 1 out 5

Do you find the word “cocaine” inherently funny? What if lots of people kept shouting it while running around in the forest? Now what if two of these people were under the age of 13? If you’re already roaring helplessly, you may be the target audience for Cocaine Bear, and I can only say how sorry I am to break the news. This black-comic caper, in which an assortment of rednecks and halfwits try to retrieve a cache of class A drugs from a rampaging bruin who’s already snorted most of them, doesn’t so much insult its viewers’ intelligence as actively libel it.

Re: Cocaine Bear

While I enjoyed seeing it in a crowd and the tight runtime made it easily digestible, it was ultimately too middle of the road to be rewatchable for the lols or goretopia of it all... I feel it's popularity is less about a marketing campaign [as I never watch trailers or engage with adverts, I just read what's coming out and decide on the basics] but a urging for folks to have a fun communal experience... like an MCU movie but not so bogged down in mythos.

For me, in the end, there was a lot of unfulfilled potential with what was brought to the screen for this project as a result I can't help but wonder if there may be a director's cut... hiding around the VOD corner, perhaps!?
