Yeah! My biggest issue with this show: not enough episodes! cool

107?  Really? Uh...

Spoiler

...I thought Connor and Burton's fight choreography was quite weak; they both looked like out of shape actors flailing around, and it took me out of it unfortunately.  Re-watch the scene of them in the future in the black outfits.

The scenes back in the USA were all great. 5/5 stars.  You wouldn't want to kill Corbell (unpopular opinion coming) because at least you can track where all the evil is coming from if you keep him alive, if you kill him, they'll find someone less congenial and more evil, and you'll never know how to stop them.

The chat between Ash and Ossian was revealing of their distrust of Zubov (in fact, everyone's distrust of everyone in the future), but the chat between Zubov and Ash, and then Cherise and Inspector Ainsley, while being well portrayed and somewhat intriguing, were boring repetitive storytelling in that "Oh, I'm going to threaten you to get information out of you, and oh I'm going to leverage my power and authority to get what I want." Yawn.  You've written the hell out of this worn out plot device, move on writers.  Wake me up when it's over.

Overall, I thought it was one of the weaker episodes.

The episode names definitely stick with you though, really funny. wink

There's a mid-credits in the finale fyi your information.

How did Conner know exactly when she'd forget what number came next? Or does everyone in near future Bumblefuck have exactly the same difficulty with counting?

Re: The Peripheral [Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller] (Chloë Grace Moretz)

I never want an episode longer than 50 mins of anything. My hamster brain gets itchy enough past 30, and that's watching everything at double speed. I think two more would have been stretching. They gave enough info to make it intriguing and make me give season 2 a shot.

Such as good show, but could have been more content/ had more episodes for the first season!

Very minor continuity goof (the first one I noticed in a while) in 1x8:

Spoiler

At 14:50, water can be seen at the retaining wall. At 15:00, the sun is visible at their right side, throwing shadows to the left.

At 21:00 (and only minutes later in the 1x8 story), long shadows can be seen in the opposite direction, and the retaining wall is dry.

With all this one tiny issue, let's assume they branched off 2032, she already connected to her peripheral in the future - so how long it will take Cherise Nuland to figure out that Inspector Lowbeer is not her friend and the cringe sniper shot was a complete bs? A minute? Plus in another cringe scene with the destruction of the clock, she herself told Nuland that there will be a new stub, just Nuland won't be able to control it, since Nuland will not be aware where/when it is. So, the premise really changed just in that aspect, Nuland won't be able to send more assassins (for a while).

Also comparison with restarting a game is not accurate, she did not restart anything, she saved the game, installed a new instance of the game in the unknown to others location and continued the same game forward on that new instance - all she achieved is kicking out some players from it (they can access just the old instance of the game in which the magical brain bacteria is splattered by some large caliber bullet) smile

And then there is a logic issue - ok, she is dead and gone, but the rest are not. For example, even the sniper boy still wants to run around in the future, now just from two stubs instead of one smile We should assume that they all there will forget about that tech, will go back to drinking a beer on a porch? smile Also these "hacker" guys etc. etc. It would make a lot more sense to jackpot that original stub, it would solve this.

Re: The Peripheral [Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller] (Chloë Grace Moretz)

Its so ridiculous stub stub everyone's a stub...
this is why i avoid time wizards, the future guys live in a stub and keep on stubbing because of the interventions.
Its so strange to me that they can get support everywhere...and the hacking, so sad
Edit: Watched till the end, pointlessness is the theme of the series

Re: The Peripheral [Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller] (Chloë Grace Moretz)

I totally lost interest in this show after 107, and I'm a month late watching episode 108, and all I can say is:

de·us ex ma·chi·na - an unexpected power or event saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived plot device in a play or novel.

However....

Spoiler

...this is the very thing I love about playing Civilization and video games in general, is restarting, and trying another approach while knowing how things play out it might go better than the last play through.

My problem is technical, like, how the hell does the time dial work, and how does Connor killing Flynne still allow another Flynne to reappear in 2032? She would had to have created the new stubb sometime before Connor kills her, right?  Someone may have to break this down for me step by step, detail by detail, point by point, to get me to understand the mechanics of how that works.  I think it's just the word stubb that throws me that I don't like, I'll just call it a "Save As", as that makes way more sense.  So she created a Save As somewhere before she died, and then destroyed the clock that allows you to make more Save As' so Cherise can't find her....essentially.

Spoiler

(The use of the word stub is a bit like the idiotic use of the word application when referring to programs.  Application means to apply or to put something to use.  With computer software, the something is the program.  Programs are what allow you to run various applications.  They should not be called apps!  ie.  Photoshop is a program that allows the application of photo editing.  In the same way, a stub is a remainder of something, it isn't a word that connotes the creation of something new or a starting point, like a Save As.  This kinda thing drives me nuts, and throws me off. lolz.  Whoever is writing all these words like Jackpot and Stubb, I don't like it.)

You know how in TENET there's the scene where she explains to the protagonist all the inverted materials flowing backwards through time?  I needed one of those scenes in this, or maybe a couple episodes of it. lolz.

https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/1*NnKsLipvh593WTLbs8-cmg.jpeg

The fact that Flynne's headaches/seizures were from Alita uploading the Research Institutes data into her head, I didn't realize or see coming which was cool, but as an early established plot point it just felt like a lengthy setup time to a rather flippant explanation that wasn't unpacked, like, there was no build up to it, and there were needless fight scenes that didn't seem to make any sense as a form of protection for the most powerful weapon that controls the flow of time!  Also, it's just 20 feet down a set of stairs off the side of a street!!??

If I've learned anything from other brothers Nolan things I've watched, it's that the less you think about it the better off you are. Though I tried that with Tenet and still ended up facepalming heavily, so your ymmv may vary.

Even if they are both dealing with complex concepts, I could follow the logic in Tenet because they spelled things out with visuals, whereas The Peripheral glossed over necessary exposition with flippant conversations instead of showing the mechanics of the time travel process in a practical way, and for me, how the time travel works is the most important plot point of the show as it holds the story together, everything else is kinda secondary, and the lack of exposition reduced all the impact of Flynne's decision in the end, for me.

The other thing that doesn't make any sense, is in the case of a multi level global catastrophe, technology will not improve, it goes back to the stone age.  That bothers me to no end with this show.  Again, explanation is needed when there are obvious plot points that don't add up.  With these writers they'd just bore us with, "oh that's easy, we'll just insert amazing thing, and technology is now unbelievable."

Depends where and how it happens, in theory also can force to focus all resources on development, imagine what the world could do with the whole military budget focused elsewhere smile

The technologists were all raptured to low orbit by Space Karen. The big reveal at the end is that the whole show was a video game controlled by a pig.

Re: The Peripheral [Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller] (Chloë Grace Moretz)

g371, that would be outstanding if the explanation for their technological advancements was from something so practical rational and grounded in reality like that, buhhhhtt, I'm going to have to go with mrverene's answer! wink

In reality all resources would be spent on agriculture, while rebuilding.  Perhaps robotics and automation would eventually become a focus due to labor shortage, but even still, you need people to build them and all the factors of production thereof!  It's the exact same problem I have with Mad Max Fury Road, the factors of production to create a vehicle are astronomical, you wouldn't drive out into the desert to destroy, everyone would be attempting to preserve everything, and in all shows depicting a post "jackpot" world, we'd all be farmers and gardeners.

It's a fun 6/10 though, you should watch it now that you can marathon the whole thing, you could come to a different conclusion, as I was watching week to week.  I completely bailed on the Mosquito Coast and finished The Peripheral, if that says anything.

Re: The Peripheral [Drama, Sci-Fi, Thriller] (Chloë Grace Moretz)

found this series a few weeks ago and enjoying it. I like the use of London as a future back ground and the strange giant statues. I like the idea of  data transfers rather than the classic Startrek warpspeed across the sun to time travel.
