Topic: La Brea
https://next-episode.net/la-brea
When a massive sinkhole mysteriously opens in Los Angeles, it tears a family in half, separating mother and son from father and daughter. When part of the family find themselves in an unexplainable primeval world, alongside a disparate group of strangers, they must work to survive and uncover the mystery of where they are and if there is a way back home.
I have just watched the first episode of this my initial comments are that it is similar to Lost, however, the quality of the CGI was not the best and some of the acting left much to be desired. Anybody else watch it and what did you think?

Re: La Brea
I fear this is one of those one season wonders, though I said that about The Manifest as well (4 seasons strong now).

Re: La Brea
yeah, i tried to like it. I thought I would. I get the Lost thing, but they did too, referencing it in a very bad line that was clearly put there to make people go "oh fair enough, at least they said it". But to be honest I'd prefer to rewatch Terra Nova instead. I took it off my watch list after skipping through the last 15 minutes. Wow. Been on here for over a decade and that's the cattiest comment I've ever posted about a show haha

Yeah, same here. It's a bit hard to watch... They didn't have the budget to make this idea work perfectly. I might regret this later, but still... I won't give up watching after 1x1 right away! P.S.: When you start a thread in this part of the forum, please take the time to pimp up the first post a bit (like I just did).

Okay, 1x2. I'll keep watching - while jumping over the logical plot holes -, but this is clearly not a show that needs your full attention.

I saw a better review for the second episode. I think i'll still leave it and wait for the full 10 to come out and binge it IF it's still got good reviews. Mainly good reviews on here as I have found imdb reviews are not my people like next-episode are.

Hahaha... well put. Unfortunately I keep tripping over these logic jumps and I feel that is where this Land of the Lost for adults will end up failing. In a attempt to get the audience of this take on Land of the Lost on board the Powers That Be erroneously believe we need some logic involved but unlike the brilliant LotL movie which somehow used just the right mix of SF mumbo-jumbo to give it some good bones to build on. Whereas the mumbo-jumbo in La Brea seems to be trying way to hard to lift the premise they are trying to sell yet at the same time, clearly, not enough research went into the series and as a result it doesn't actually have the strength to hold itself up. But that's just my feeling as of Ep 2... if I stick with it perhaps I'll be surprised.

▼Spoiler 1. Him finding that ring relatively easily was stupid. 2. Shouldn't the ring have been deeper underground? Given they went back ~12,000 years

Not enough money went into the series, almost everything else is a result of that. ▼Spoiler imadsani wrote:1. Him finding that ring relatively easily was stupid. 2. Shouldn't the ring have been deeper underground? Given they went back ~12,000 years
Not necessarily... 'stuff' isn't deposited everywhere equally over time.

You're not wrong but even sub par production value can be worked around if the story or characters/actors can carry the load, unfortunately this story seems like it was written by a child... and not like a Jim Shooter kind of child, who was professionally writing comics at age 13. I'm talking about the kind of kid that still eats glue in middle school As for the characters and the acting... well again, it is early days

Yeah, true... let's see how the show continues.

I mean yes, but I doubt this series has the story or characters/actors... but maybe I'll be surprised

Re: La Brea
Actors, dialog and plot are all rather pedestrian but the concept is interesting and so far they are revealing it in a compelling fashion. Hard to tell how long that will last.

Re: La Brea
*sigh* while the latest episode was gripping, I started to focus on the set in 10kBC, who decided how much of the landmass would make it through the phenomena? why did portions of the land masses(buildings, roads, cars etc) but the humans made it through in full, no half cut humans or limbs?

I'm assuming that roads and buildings just broke apart when falling into the sink hole. Humans, well, they should have just went *splat* when hitting the ground. Maybe a bunch did, and the ones left alive are just the few that somehow survived. I mean a giant sink hole opened up in LA. You'd think a 10's or even 100's of thousand people would be involved, so the odd 100 or so that we see might be all that's left. Or maybe there are different groups scattered around or that went to another time slightly in the past or future from our group. Just keep watching to find out I guess. As for myself, I'm enjoying the show. I can overlook bad acting and bad CGI if the story is consistent and well written (for right now I'll give this a "well ENOUGH written story" and just have fun with it. EDIT: I thought about this for a bit and I see what you were saying. Even if the buildings and roads were broken up, there would still be a literal mountain of debris. Maybe the rift filters out most of the non organic stuff? Or it somehow only lets inorganic stuff (like cars) through if organic material was in close proximity? Thanks. Now this is going to bug me too

THIS! It has bothered me from the beginning... tons of sand/ dirt should be visible, but not one bit is. Ah well, it's a cheap show after all.

Re: La Brea
I think one guy in IMDB review summed up perfectly: "Sometimes, I'm in the mood for some NBC trash.". Great for a background noise, not that you will lose anything if you will miss a half of it. Love the Fear the Walking Dead approach of explaining things: "it does not matter" - don't think about it, we know as well it's a massive plot hole

These days, I prefer to watch nothing instead of trash.

Re: La Brea
I am loving Season 2. I watch for entertainment value. Killing, drama, suspense, sinister plot, romance, time jumps, the 80s. What's not to love? I watch for entertainment value and I am very entertained. Considering they had to film during Covid-19 challenges and restrictions, I am impressed by the show.

Re: La Brea
During the 2'nd season I started to get the feeling like it's some soap opera with touch of sci-fi and now half way into 3rd it only deepens.

Re: La Brea
Just watched S03E05 - really well done! The story line picked up the pace and got very interesting! Went to https://www.nbc.com/nbc-insider/show/la-brea and found out that sadly, this is 3rd and final season. Next week is S03E06 and the series finale. I really don't want the show to end. I wish it would continue for a few more seasons so we could see ▼Spoiler the time travel technology exploited instead of the show being tied up neatly in the final episode. Think of the fun they would have using time travel to create chaos and havoc to the timeline and history as we know it. The premise of building fighter jets with time travel tech to go back in time and win wars that were lost would be a game changer. Even more interesting is the fact that Maya plans to sell the tech to the highest bidder opens up a myriad of sinister scenarios that will now not be esplored. Anybody else watching and enjoying the show despite it ending too soon?

I only just now finished the final episode, and yes, I enjoyed it. I liked the conclusions.
