Re: The Orville
scorpius074 wrote:@TheFizza Thanks. That was an interesting read. Moze wrote:I really do enjoy the show and this season, but I wish they could stop repeating the same topics and issues. Lets hope for something else for the last episodes.
I don't mind them revisiting certain topics and issues as long as it's done extremely well; with possible future seasons on the horizon involving new planets or meeting significant new alien species. It almost feels like they're tying up loose ends in case the show doesn't get renewed. My only gripe with this episode is that I wish it came at a later time. Maybe at some point next season? But with a fourth season still unconfirmed, and all but given, I think they wanted to set a few things straight. This is the first instance for me where the show begins to drag somewhat. ▼Spoiler It's certainly an important moment for Topa, but the time she spends having dinner with the colony, speaking with Heveena, and chasing the Luminites into the forest almost felt like an entire episode on its own. Since the relationship with the Moclans has been severed, it puts everyone at a disadvantage if the Kaylon decides to attack. Maybe opening the door for a future unforeseen ally? Everything really picks up at around the time when Gordon calls out the Moclans for what they are. What follows are some powerful scenes when Bortus addresses the Council. Those were some hard-to-swallow scenes seeing Topa being tortured, and MacFarlane once again showing us he's not shy about going there if it helps advance the plot. BTW, kudos to Imani Pullum for her spectacular performance. Ed Mercer is a mastermind when it comes to dealing with people. Placing Heveena in the exact same situation as she did Topa was just brilliantly unexpected considering the cameo appearance. Dolly helped steer her along as only Dolly could, but Heveena was also smart enough to see the subtext of the entire situation. Well done Dolly, and Ed. I'm also glad Klyden—played by Chad L. Coleman, aka Fred Johnson—is back, and even happier seeing him have a change of heart towards his daughter and Kelly. Almost losing a child can change one's perspective. Like I said earlier, all of this might've worked out even better at some point in the future, but who knows if there is one for the show? Now, with Klyden back, that hinted thing between Bortus and Kelly makes even less sense. And I don't care what anyone says, the Moclan shuttle still looks like a late '90s computer mouse lols. Who knows? Maybe all of this will lead to a double feature extravaganza for the ages involving the Moclans and Kaylons or Krill to cap off a near-perfect season? How about those establishing shots of Heveena's islands and that scene of the Orville coming out of the nebula. Sheesh... My hands down favorite hilarious moment so far this season is Gordon's face going from no clue to getting it. "Good job, Sherlock."
Well put, I too like when it's done well, just like this episode, I really liked the moments you talked about as well, stellar performances from the actors! Makes sense when you talk about renewal or not, so I guess i take back what I said

Re: The Orville
has any one noticed the lenght of the episodes in this season ? eps 8 was feature length 1 hr 26 mins others 70 mins. The first and 2nd seasons were the standard 40-48 mins. Would never get that on CW. Makes all the difference?

Re: The Orville
Absolutely! Moving from FOX to Hulu gave us fewer episodes than the first two seasons but they're significantly longer. I enjoy the longer runtime for the most part.

Re: The Orville
I've never seen a show that managed to transition from a send-up of Sci-Fi to a serious Sci-Fi drama epic while still maintaining a spattering of humour and do it well. At first, I was a little put-off by the change in direction but gave it a chance and it's really grown on me.

Re: The Orville
I think at the start, it didn't really know what type of show it was supposed to be, that was the problem. Was it a sci-fi show with loads of humour, or a comedy set in space? As time has gone on it's really nailed its levels of both sci-fi and humour. Great show.
2020. Meh.

well eps 9 gave what was missing - space opera. A great episode to balance the more thoughtful ones.

Re: The Orville
the things that are absurd about this show a) the robot - we know he is able to put on a more or less human form so why not all the time? b) the love affair with the female doctor is ABSURD BEYOND BELIEF- she must be real starved for attention & options to want to have an affair with a robot that has no feelings & has no bits. How does that work even? Seems like what some people have for their car giving it a name. Do they have sex even? how does that work? The robot was fine with its painted on eyes when this show was a comedy but now it is a joke for a different reason

It only works on the holo deck. But I do remember the captain putting on a holo suit to look like a Krill. So who knows. This season they focused way to much on the robot and doctor and Klydens kid. And considering that some episodes were movie length, they really bored the crap out of me. They had there chance. Maybe Hulu is in control of their direction now. Or Seth went off the rails. Who knows.
I think "he" had dinner with her as a human in the mess hall?

Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

Re: The Orville
Euhm, I'm pretty sure there will be more seasons because they got their budget increased for season 3 with alot, I've rarely seen that happen with an end to the show in the same season, in fact I can't remember a single show where it went out like that. Edit: You increase the budget when you're expecting to make more seasons because it's a good show(business wise) as far as I can tell.

Episode 11 is actually apisode 8.5 and was released as a novella. The Orville: Sympathy for the Devil. I remember reading a few days ago that if it were to happen they'd have to gather all the cast members and renegotiate their deals.

I have seen shows renewed for 2 seasons more after 2 seasons and then cancelled before filming. A show can die at the drop of a hat.
That's not the same at all though. Well you guys might be right that it's not coming back, very weird behavior with that funding though.

Re: The Orville
merc wrote:it felt like an end of series round up?
Exactly! Episode 309 was the penultimate episode that served as the season finale and 310 was the farewell and tribute to the fans; hence the title Future Unknown. I enjoyed it and chuckled a few times along the way, and it even got me with a jumpscare towards the end. It would be a tragic loss IMO not to have more seasons of The Orville since there is still a lot of untapped potential there. The finale functions both as a season finale, that sets up possible new threads, and also as a series finale, if it truly all ends here. Most of this season was written with that possibility in mind. I'll miss it, but at least I got a satisfying ending to a superb season. That's something I can't say too often these days... ▼Spoiler So happy to see Alara again one last time.
