If you need a recap of The Witcher Season 1 before Season 2 arrives, let us guide you through the events of Season 1, from the incident in Blaviken to the Battle of Sodden Hill, in chronological order.

Damn... I had forgotten how much happened in season 1! yikes

I hope to find the time to start watching season 2 soon. smile

Re: The Witcher

Wow, thanks for that.
I watched season 2 but was wondering what was going on - that helped me remember a lot of stuff.

Re: The Witcher

I can't speak to the games but they're really far afield of the books after s2. That's a good thing as the books are boring as hell.

Just finished it and I think it was Better Than Season One!

Re: The Witcher

Agreed, getting rid of the unexplained time jumps helped a ton. Not to mention keeping the singing mostly confined to pubs so i could hit the skip forward button without missing story.

31

Re: The Witcher

Who is playing Geralt now?

32

Re: The Witcher

I think it's still Cavill for s3 and Liam Hemsworth for s4

Its astounding how little of that I remembered lol

Re: The Witcher

waiting for the last 3 episodes before i watch so i don't have to watch the recap twice tongue

Re: The Witcher

Well, for me the only reason to watch this is Cavill. The rest is just a godawful. And I don't even complain about black elves, a hugely diverse magic council or

Spoiler

the gay Radovid-Jaskier setup, lesbian Philippa and SM-Dykstra

I don't think, these "creative additions" sit well in the Witcher world, but I could live with it.

I just dislike everything about the show since beging season 2. The whole storyline and storytelling is kind of confusing, most of the characters are highly unlikeable and to be honest... most of the actors just can't pull me in... bad acting all over the place. Worst offender here are Anya Chalotra and Triss Merigold for me. Unfortunaly they play two very iconic and important roles... Yenn and Triss... which is a shame.

Together with some very strange visuals like how the dwarfs are setup. They just filmed a normal human and then in post-processing shrank it down/copied into the scene as "smaller version human". Or the female dwarf weapon smith with the glue-on-beard. I mean... WTF? They have the iconic franchise, the have the money,... how could nobody say "look, those dwarfs look stupid, lets copy from Lord of the Rings...". Or some of the CGI for the mages are just... bad.

Anyway, I guess I am not the target audience for a Game of Thrones-politic game meets Amazon LotR meets Witcher mash-up.

I really liked the episodic season 1.

Re: The Witcher

I partially get your criticism, fassy, but are there any fantasy shows that hold up to your high standards? smile I find The Witcher quite enjoyable (story, acting, settings, costumes, ...)!

38

Re: The Witcher

I've really enjoyed this season so far, although episode 5 was a little boring.
Bring it on!

Well, depends on what we rate as "fantasy". If we look at high fantasy, yeah... not too much here which I really like. If we count GoT in that genre... then I think I enjoyed the first couple of seasons. And like I said, I like the first season of The Witcher.

So, what do we have? Rings of Power? Awful! Wheels of time? Yuck!  House of Dragons? Meh.

Are there any more noteworthy medieval fantasy shows? Don't think so. Even though I did not like the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies when they were released... by now I actually like them a lot and for me are a good example how medieval fantasy should look and feel like.

Going away from medieval, there were some quite decent fantasy shows around like Carnival Row or Penny Dreadful. Or Supernatural (up to some point), or Van Helsing, or ... quite a lot of others.

But back to the Witcher:

I just don't like the way of storytelling in Season 02 and 03. They kind of give a crap on the lore and world-building or consistency. I could even live with that if the story would be told well. But it isn't! The whole "scheming" of the political actors including the council of mages is just a mess. It is hard - I would argue actual impossible - to follow who is doing what and absolutely no word of why. It is hard enough to follow who is supposed to be who (especially having the books - not the game - in mind), but then some of the afore mentioned creative additions are just ridiculous attempt to appease a certain audience.

And about the acting... in my opinion, the only one doing a good (actually awesome) job here is Cavill. The rest of the cast (including Batey) is quite weak. Not sure if is really the acting or the bad dialogues/weak scenes. But I am not impressed. e.g. I liked Chalotra in season 01, not so much 02 and 03... quite bad.

Yes, settings and costumes are mostly alright. And one or the other monster fight pretty awesome, e.g. the flesh monster. Actually... just the one... the others were not that impressive (baby wyvern, aeschna, jackapace)

Would that make Geralt the maitre d' or Mr. Creosote?

44

Re: The Witcher

The princess' and the Witcher's physical suffering in the last two episodes was too long-drawn-out for my taste, but other than that I enjoyed season 3.

Well, thanks for the entirely unwanted reminder of that particular skit. Actually... somehow a comedy troupe managed to create a more effective example of body horror than whatever the afforementioned "flesh monster" was more than 30 years ago.

It really wanted you to keep track of all the dozens of characters and their names this time around, yet gave at least me absolutely no reason to care about any of them. Not good, that. Then again, GoT was kinda the same and everyone seemed to enjoy it there...
