Topic: TV shows I like (and why most are US shows)
Quoted from https://forum.next-episode.net/viewtopi … 61#p166061 : graybags wrote:Also, why don't many UK shows appeal to you? What sort of shows do you like? I don't think that I'd ever say that I don't like most of the TV shows that an entire group of countries produce.
Ha, I had expected your reply when posting! Not to worry... many shows from Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Japan also don't appeal to me. Not all of my favorite shows are US shows, but US artists and companies have created an ecosystem that (even if not perfect by any means) makes it more likely to produce quality shows. (Similarly, in a way, the US created an ecosystem for startup companies that became so successful that it (among other factors) resulted in this crazy headline: "U.S. tech stocks are now worth more than the entire European stock market".) Some examples of what I really like: https://next-episode.net/messiah https://next-episode.net/devs https://next-episode.net/the-mandalorian https://next-episode.net/the-boys https://next-episode.net/the-expanse https://next-episode.net/the-magicians https://next-episode.net/lovecraft-country https://next-episode.net/legion https://next-episode.net/preacher https://next-episode.net/happy! https://next-episode.net/into-the-night https://next-episode.net/condor

Re: TV shows I like (and why most are US shows)
I'd never say that the US make more quality shows than poor ones, I'd say it's the other way around. But that's just my opinion. I don't find American humour very funny most of the time, so a lot of the comedies I don't find very funny at all. The US might have the budget for say, huge sci-fi extravanganzas, but a big budget doesn't guarantee a good TV show, not at all. If a TV show has bugger all budget and is still great I think I'd be far more into that. Just because you throw a load of money at a turd, it's still a turd.

I've never done the math on the exact "great to crap" ratios for all the countries, but what matters to me is the amount of good shows that come out of the US.

You may not of done the math, but did you do the maths?

I think you will find that the word "maths" is an abbreviation of the word "mathematics". So using the word "math" is just wrong. As is lots of the other bastardised words the Americans use of my language! Also, there is no such thing as "mature British cheddar", it's mature ENGLISH cheddar! I am proud of my quaint little country and it's inconsistencies, as you put it. There endeth today's lesson

And the english language originated from germanic languages (like anglo-saxon) and in german we say "Mathematik" which stands for the entire math science and there are no plural forms of it, so the abbreviation "math" makes also more sense in german than "maths" for us. But anyway most shows i watch and like are also from the US, because they are usually well produced with a decent budget, the american accent is easier to understand for me and many actors are also easy on the eyes which is a plus in my book aswell But of course there are good/great shows from other countries aswell.

Some American accents I actually have to turn subtitles on to translate, they are so wack. I prefer English! And English humour. And maths! Also there's no such language as American and for god's sakes start using SI units like the metre and kilogram. We are not in the middle ages any more!

I'd like to add that it is also likely that this is a matter of probability to some degree. There is simply no other country that has such a large industry trying to produce such a variety of internationally mass-marketable content. Perhaps this is simply due to you having more options total to choose from. Though, then again, I can rarely ever stand anything anime - the actually japanese kind, that is. It's not that I think most of it is bad, it's just that a lot of cultural ideas/concepts/expressions do not translate well into any western culture or language, which makes a lot of it awkward.

While I agree with your comment, "...the english language originated from germanic languages" to an extent, the word "mathematics" actually comes from ancient greek, as do lots of our other words. Lots from Latin too, and French. Language evolves, and not always for the better! Anyway, I watched the first ep of the new Utopia last night. And I thought it was... ok. Nowhere near as good as the original, they just never got the tone, feel or soul of it anywhere close. Even the music was just off. I think I'll keep watching, but I just wish they'd changed maybe a few more aspects and called it something else, maybe nobody would have even known it was related to the original idea.

True, a lot of words originate from other languages, but especially the Latin and Greek ones are not neccessarily borrowed from there directly but might actually be funneled in from another language that was borrowing it already, which both French and German are known to do. We'd need a lot more information on the etymology here to be sure...

I hardly ever have a problem understanding a speaker these days, maybe it's a matter of getting used to it - but subtitles help. Not only when you don't want to crank up the volume, but also when they sneak in a word that's extremely rare. And it helps with learning proper spelling. graybags wrote:Also, there is no such thing as "mature British cheddar", it's mature ENGLISH cheddar!
Nobody told the producers of (and the people responsible for naming) ASDA Organic Mature British Cheddar and Sainsbury's British Mature Cheddar Cheese!

*sigh*. It's just a case of the PC police striking again. Cheddar is from a place in ENGLAND called CHEDDAR. But hey, let's be all inclusive and call it "British". Jesus.

You will find that nobody ever really cared about your internal affairs and distinctions to begin with. What even is Wales? Why would we ever need to acknowledge such a thing exists? "British" is just a useful shorthand for "somewhere on or near that island where everyone seems to hate each other for no reason but pretends not to". It beats letting the British decide what we should call them, at any rate.

Wow, how to alienate people. What is Wales? It's a country full of very proud people Anyone reading your comment will be highly offended. I won't dignify the rest of your comments with a response.

I am obviously joking. Still, if somebody is from the US, that is likely as much information as you'll need. It's simply not quite as relevant to know they are from, say, Illinois. It mostly matters to people who also live in the US.

Re: TV shows I like (and why most are US shows)
I think a lot of what makes entertainment interesting is culture. Where you grew up makes a world of a difference. At the same time, I find there are gems from every country and culture. Too many people are stuck on, "they don't look like me, so I am not interested, and I am not going to even give them a chance. Besides the fact that I prefer American English without subtitles, (but, if it is entertaining enough, I will endure the subtitles), I have found American entertainment has moved more towards non-stop dialogue over cinematography, writing, and creativity. It's always the same storyline and a bunch of talking to cover up the fact there isn't any real substance or entertainment value. You find out very quickly that there are only a few countries that speak some sort of English. Basically, there is New Zealand, the UK, America, Canada, and Nigeria. I often find that I must have the subtitles on when watching anything from Nigeria and often the UK..depending on what part of the UK it is coming from. Then there are those that seem to fight against all Sci-Fi. They make jokes about people that prefer science-related entertainment, and I am not talking about fantasy and horror. Star Wars is not Sci-Fi. Neither is The Shinning. Star Trek used to be Sci-Fi until they decided to copy Star Wars. A good example of Sci-Fi is 2001 A Space Odyssey, or The Martian.
