The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan's series of fantasy novels. At the center of the Wheel of Time's diverse cast of characters is Rand al'Thor, a seemingly average young man who is destined for something bigger ...
The Wheel of Time turns and authors come and go. Books become myth, myth becomes TV shows for teenagers. I have to say this: {grump on} They changed stuff, some by necessity, others with no discernable reasons. But I don't have to like it.{grump off} The sets and landscape are gorgeous and I thought the acting was good. What I disliked was the crudeness inserted into what was a pretty clean read. For me, this changed the characters a little. I also liked the costuming, which challenged the memories I'd built. I do wish Moiraine had her jewel, though. The Husband loved it, so episode 2 is queued up. Your thoughts?

Big fan of the books here! Altho it's been a while since I last read them, so I probably won't be that irritated about changes they did.

Also a huge fan of the books... but a little nervous about how this adaptation will turn out, could be a hit or a total disaster based on the trailers so far. I just hope that Amazon gives the show a bit of time to find it's stride. Given there were 13 books there is obviously a tonne of source material to work with, they've got to find what works best to tell the story on TV.

I noped out at the 32 minute mark of ep 1. haven't read the books but felt like i'd already watched the show dozens of times.

Wow! Loved 1x1! I had no specific expectations and liked what I saw. I don't remember a character named Janzo. Explain, please? Finished ep 3 tonight. The more I watch, the more sour I get. It's like that scene in "The Sixth Sense" where Haley Joel Osment asks Bruce Willis to tell him a bedtime story and the prince gets in his car and drives and drives and drives some more and keeps on driving...
These characters run and ride and run and ride some more and nothing is explained, so unless you've read the books, it's pretty flat.
However, I'm *compelled* to watch the rest. Such is the memory of an addiction. I wonder if Lanfear will show up in this first season? And who will play her? There are 2 actresses listed on IMDB who have no character assigned...

I have only watched the first eps and got me thinking this the just finsihed, budget production "The Outpost" an olden days rustic story. Janzo was the amusing eclectic character who solved all the problems was every thing unappreciated son, doctor, scientist, publican and beer mixer, who moved like the hunch back of Notre Dame. I was joking. Maybe look up the show.

Oh man I love this show. Why do I get strong Saturday morning TV vibes from this? Probably the classic middle of the road fantasy fiction Lord of the Rings / Narnia / Game of Thrones / Once Upon a Time / Stargate vibes, combined with the amount of wide screen shots and then super super super super tight close ups, lolz, but regardless, it's such an inviting watch. Rosamund Pike really carries the show well. While everyone else is trying to make TV look like movies this feels like classic TV again. What I also found refreshing was that, although there are strong parallels in the cultures and worldviews they portray to our own, it wasn't preachy and trying to give a message in it's portrayal of those cultures and worldviews, but just trying to tell this story as best they could in the first 3 episodes, which I appreciated. I can see this type of story getting REALLY preachy if it's not handled well. Oddly, I found episode 101 was the weaker episode. Too CW.

ah talking about the Outpost. eps 3 in the mining town wiith the willie nelson singer, Janzo's black blood priesttess girl friend , Wren, tuns up as the bar lady. maybe Janzo will save them after all all in all some great scenary. how many are real though?

You did this before. Please don't randomly mention a character from another (unrelated) show. If you must, explain right away why you mention a character from another show.

I'm 3/4 of the way through episode 3 and I know exactly what you mean about feeling like you've watched it a dozen times before. I'm not saying it's bad but its just ... really generic. I'm really not sure if I'll even bother finishing this episode, its all just been done before and done better. I've never read the books but don't people rave about them and say they are amazing? I'm not getting that at all from this.

My feeling is the books were very influential but practically everything they've influenced got adapted before them. I may be missing out by not watching it but I'm thrilled to not have yet another show to plow through.

Definitely generic, and I kind of like that about it. Perhaps you guys managed to stomach a lot of garbage I couldn't watch and ruined shows like this for yourself. Let me know the alternatives that made you feel like you watched this a dozen times. @Merc I lasted a whole 10 minutes of the Outpost and turned it off. Unwatchable. 3/10. At best. This editorial in the Hollywood Reporter about The Outpost was hilarious:

Ha ha its very possible I’ve slogged my way through worse trash than you can stomach. I used to have the stupid belief that once I started something I had to finish it….not anymore though. The most recent show that this reminds me of is the Shannara Chronicles, S1 I enjoyed but S2 was a disappoitment

well as I said before eps 1 of the wheel reminded me of the Outpost with its rustic inn and town, then it shifted to Lord of the Rings half way through. The Outpost did get better than that news report assessed on just one eps. I have now watched all 3 eps and it is fellowship x3. Nice scenery and cgi city. its painless to watch

Fair enough. Strong Narnia vibes too, with the look of the trolic's, at least to me. I totally forgot about the Shannara Chronicles, I shut it off right around the point we meet John Rhys-Davies. Honestly, it's the low production quality of those shows, with poor decisions in production like the over saturated color palette and then the story is just a pre-teen after school special; a boring melodrama. The wheel of time, has that baked in there, but it isn't the focus, but it's definitely there, Amazon don't wanna lose them teens, but it's for an older audience as well, unlike the Shannara Chronicles. The closest TV shows that The Wheel of Time reminds me of is like, Game of Thrones (that has great elements) meets Once Upon A Time (plenty of garbage fantasy fiction elements).

I just jumped onboard this after Thanksgiving family viewing lead here... I have never read the books but I am aware of them (those giant tomes taking up whole bookstore shelves). As someone coming to this series completely unversed in this fictional world I must say they've done a pretty good job of making the series compelling... so far. I hope it keeps up

Having read the books, huge disappointment to me. I'd write out all the changes so far, but there are honestly too many. Episode 4 entirely never occurred in the books. The books were and are one of my top all time fantasy series, and I was really looking forward to seeing this when I heard about it. Watching it now is like a punch to the gut. I honestly hope they stop making it before they cock up any more of Jordan's work.
