Topic: I'd like to see a REVIEW option added to the series pages...

I don't know if this is possible or if others have made this suggestion for the site before but I think the option for a site user to leave a review for series would be fantastically useful to many of us not sure if we should check out a show as well as give those not active in the forums a taste of user involvement.

It could also drive traffic to the forum if constructed with options to drill down on those user's reviews and even just direct folks to the forums for more in depth analysis and/or discussions.

Thanks!

I don't think the site is big enough to add something like this...

Agreed, we already have a star rating and a lot of the popular shows have dedicated forum pages.

Duplicating the forums into a review/comment system would not be a great idea.

Re: I'd like to see a REVIEW option added to the series pages...

One could just post a review to each shows dedicated topic on the forums? On perhaps create another topic for reviews?

I agree with the replies - show raing + posting in a dedicated thread (which can be done in a review format if a user so wishes) achieves this well enough ...

Re: I'd like to see a REVIEW option added to the series pages...

Thanks for the replies all and as someone who is not versed in the technical aspects of web design I cannot comment intelligently as to how difficult it would be to add an option for user reviews and/or create a path from reviews to the forum... HOWEVER I can state that I believe the point is missed as to why this is sooooooo much better an idea than posting on the series forums user's reviews.

As someone constrained to the forum to add reviews I feel obligated to point out several things: Like those 'reviews' are not meant to start a conversation but (ideally) to provided a platform for opinions which may help others in deciding to watch something. Further those opinions placed in the forum are, by nature, swallowed by further comments which pile over them and they may also feel quiet out of context at those points. On top of which many folks add reviews at different times, sometimes it is years after a program has finished airing while others do like to review as series air.

More importantly we are all here to celebrate our common interest, even if only in part, but the only ways that can be accomplished is to heavily engage in the something like the forum (which to be fair many users are not very aware of as it is not even an option on the app) or the very passive choice of rating (which isn't even something you can do per season... it's the entire series or nothing). As a result those rating exist in a sort of vacuum, they have no context for say how a series performs either episode-to-episode or season-to-season. This may not be a big deal for programs like M*A*S*H or The Twilight Zone (1959) which were pretty consistent overall but what of that last season of SCRUBS or Battlestar Galactica (2004).

For that matter what about a television series like American Horror Story which might be transient one season then may be painful to watch the next. How does one rate this inconsistency with just an overall series star rating system? What of those anthology series like the Twilight Zone in any of it's incarnation, can a star rating truly provide any use to someone who didn't like the only episode they have watched to that point?

As part of the forum I have recently be conversing about how some programs have taken awhile to become compelling. I would love the opportunity to advise fellow Teleophiles that they might do will to give some series a chance as it might take awhile for them to see what made the series good.

Listen I'm not trying to be a jerk here and I'm very happy to have a place like Next Episode where I can keep track of what I'm watching and what I have watched. But I believe it could be better, it could be a resource for billions of series fans the world over and I think improving our ability to rate programs with the addition of a review is a great start... More importantly it's of value to newbies who might become more regular users, if like other web based resources, it can offer the very simple ability to give more depth to (IMHO) the iffy use of rating alone to indicating the value of our favorite or even least favorite television series.

Re: I'd like to see a REVIEW option added to the series pages...

If I want to read a review I just go to imdb and look for reviews for a particular movie or program, or Amazon if they have the movie or program (nice review section) or I just read the threads here in the forums about a particular movie or program.  Often enough the thread topics here will pique my interest in a program or movie (which I can research further later if I so desire) and I may have something new to watch.

I see where you're aiming and it seems awfully ambitious but is it warranted?

If I'd want to see what others think this is what I'd do too.

I have seen that there are people who like different things that I do and watch shows for different reasons with dedication. I am not like that. I don't care for recommendations, I know what I like and often will check out new shows based on people or premise. Not by reviews.

But I see the point of having a text based review. I also see why it might not be a thing for this site.

I'd love if there was an easy way to find the forum discussion thread, like for example on the page of the TV show on here. Maybe users could suggest threads, just like we can with the "If you like Hacks you may also like"-section. Just a thought.

There's a forum thread link on tons of show pages here already. smile https://next-episode.net/ted-lasso for example.

It's not as comfortable, but that's already being done for one and a half years, see https://forum.next-episode.net/viewtopic.php?id=9954. Would be great if I'd not be the (almost) only one to post links there. cool

Personally I hate IMDb and it's focus is supposed to be movies even if it does have TV series (which might be a bit of an overreach, but I digress) whereas Next Episode is a platform for series not movies. I would much rather trust a Teleophile over a Filmophile about a series if only because while film & television may be cousins, they are not identical tongue

Thank you but is ambition a bad thing? I believe the adage of 'change or die' is most apt on the internet... how many of us came here from sites which didn't change or changed in bad ways (like TV Guide's website)? And I only found Next Episode by word of mouth. Which, again, I am grateful for.

Thank you again LuC, for indicating I have stated my point of view and reasoning in a coherent way. Though it is unfortunate I did not sell you on that POV hmm

I find the forum a bit unwieldy at times, I have come here on more than one occasion with no agenda to just see what folks are talking about but more often then not that type of perusal quickly turns into just hitting discussions on series I have recently watched. I really have no suggestion on how that might be addressed but it's nice to know that I might not be the only one smile

True, ambition is important, so is change/ progress. But there's also mission creep... And there are always budget or time restrictions: if santah would try to bring every suggestion to life he would have to clone himself 10 times. wink

I'm speaking from experience, I still 'patiently' wait for a tracking on/ off switch on show pages (for shows on my watchlist). cool

100% agree with adding reviews to shows. It's a hassle to go to another site to find a reviews. I thinks its a positive rather than a negative if you mean the site is too small for this feature. If its smaller it gets more personal, maybe you will find a reviewer your views align with, and you could maybe list all shows he made reviews for etc.
