Re: The Mosquito Coast [Drama, Action, Adventure]
I watched the first 2 episodes and this is a solid win for me, it's just as good as the trailer. It builds well, I'm interested in the story, and really interested in the backstory. Some beautiful shots in the opener. ▼Spoiler I think they were agents that got burned. He's doing a lot of social leveraging and tech work, and Melissa George is another Lauren Reed, Vaughn's ex-wife, from Alias, I think, so, a super agent of some kind. Give this a watch on Apple TV on Fridays. It's good.

It is a little slow but I stuck with it. ▼Spoiler You can tell he has done something really serious but we still don't know what. He has some skills too. The wife obviously knows everything, but she is keeping a low profile for now.

Re: The Mosquito Coast [Drama, Action, Adventure]
I dident watch the Trailer and just startet to watch it and after a few minutes my jaws dropped as i remembered that i read the book The Mosquito Coast by PaulTheroux around 25 years ago and it was awesome. There are not many books i can still remember so long ago. There was also a movie adaption with Harrison Ford but dont remember if that was any good. Im not sure if the series can compete with the book but i will check it out anyway.

Re: The Mosquito Coast [Drama, Action, Adventure]
Paul Theroux makes an appearance to discuss this adaptation for Apple TV on the Bonus Content, Inside The Episode: Light Out, so you might want to check that out HomerS. Even though the writers throw these characters into precarious situations in an obvious way, I enjoy watching them get out of those situations. Bit of a cat and mouse thing going on, which is welcomed viewing for me at the moment. Not as much of a slow burner as I thought it was going to be, the story moves forward faster than I was expecting, and there's action. I have really really low expectations for AppleTV shows, so that helps. ▼Spoiler I loved it when the daughter drove the truck into the cop car and rescued her father, "teen super agent just learning her abilities", style. That was great.

Watched 1x2. Great show! Suspense, an interesting story, many different locations, and a quality cast! g371 wrote:▼Spoiler Tho bonus points for showing a plausible ankle monitor hacking and shimming handcuffs.

Ep 1x03. Are events in television episodes optional? Action to Slow Burner bait and switch. Yawn. This whole episode could be 8 minutes long.

Yes. paisley1 wrote:Ep 1x03. Are events in television episodes optional?
Yes! I really fell in love with Justin Theroux right from the start of the show. I've liked him already, he's such a versatile actor (see https://next-episode.net/maniac! ). And I also feel like it's time to finally start watching https://next-episode.net/the-leftovers - another show with him as a lead character. By the way: He is a nephew of writer Paul Theroux and a cousin of journalists Louis Theroux and Marcel Theroux.

Re: The Mosquito Coast [Drama, Action, Adventure]
Great actors. Bad Director. Paced too slow. He didn't advance the plot. ▼Spoiler We knew they were going to walk through the desert and find the beacon and phone a friend, which could've been the first 8 minutes of the episode, but they dragged it out for an hour, and all we learned was how they suffer under hot and cold conditions. Gong! Great actors though, too bad it was such torture for them to shoot, because it was needless to this viewer. A couple aerial shots of them walking, meeting the people in the valley, the snake bite, then the call from the beacon, and then start the story with the Mexican guys who pick them up. That is all that was needed.

You know... there's this other activity (typically involving two people) that can be concluded in 8 minutes... but if it's really good (great actors!), why not prolong it?

It's a bit like saying the Lord of the Rings is about two short blokes with hairy feet, who go on a long walk to throw a ring into a fire, then go home.

It was a bit like showing a full 120 minutes of Sam and Frodo walking through the dead marshes with Gollum! Unnecessary. I'm not suggesting they skip plot, it's the complete opposite, this episode didn't have any plot and could've been cut down. Lord of the Rings has the opposite problem to this, it should've been 6 movies not 3, as there's so much story that was missed. Pacing is important for telling a story in a meaningful way, and this was a lot of what we already know instead of what we don't, and as a result came off like filler that didn't really advance the plot much. Have you seen the movie 'Gerry' with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck? Episode 1x03 felt like that. (Too far, that's mean, this episode was way better than that movie.)

I have not and I won't, but thanks for reminding me of 'Gary' in Living With Jigsaw - just had to watch it again (only 2 minutes long)!

The relation is that in Gerry, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck walk through the desert for 103 minutes and nothing happens.

Ep1x04 was good, kept the suspense up, straddled the line of believability at the end. Looking forward to learning the backstory one day.

Re: The Mosquito Coast [Drama, Action, Adventure]
I briefly read the plot to the book last night. Seems this show isn't related to the book at all, other than the names of the characters. Shame really, I just don't understand why they do that. Just call it something else!
