Topic: Debris
https://next-episode.net/debris
About the Show: When mysterious wreckage starts falling from the sky, a secretive international agency is tasked with figuring out what it is, where it came from, and most importantly… what it can do. British agent Finola Jones and American agent Bryan Beneventi are partners who have very different styles – she's warm, intuitive and detail-oriented, and he's charming, confident and guarded. But they have no choice but to trust each other as they track down the debris scattered across the Western Hemisphere. Each fragment has unpredictable, powerful and sometimes dangerous effects on the everyday people who find it. Every discovery is also a race against time, because shadowy outside forces seek these objects for nefarious purposes. The cast includes Jonathan Tucker, Riann Steele, Norbert Leo Butz and Scroobius Pip. Creator and showrunner J.H. Wyman will write and executive produce alongside his company, Frequency Films. Jason Hoffs, Jeff Vlaming and Samantha Corbin-Miller will also executive produce. Airs March 1, 2021 on NBC.

Since I'm a huge fan of Joel Wyman because of Fringe and the episode "Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11" which he wrote and produced, I'm looking forward to what he can do without Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, and if the show will have the comedic, emotional and relational dynamics that made Fringe so great. Also, I'm wondering how much this show will touch on Bob Lazar: Area 51 & Flying Saucers, the Berkshire UFO's, the Tic-Tac UFO, and content discussed on the program Ancient Aliens. We'll see. Lighton, could you add a Forum link on the show page to this thread?

Re: Debris
Well I watched the first episode, and it was good, but flat. The production is great, with good music, lots of coverage, location shooting, and interesting special effects that have a similar visual style and texture to Fringe. I liked the story with the kid and mom, and the performances by the secondary actors was very well done. I don't like the lead actors though, they're just really flat to watch on screen, like they have no star quality or interesting personalities worth getting to know; they're boring. Either the lead characters are just written flat and are in service to the story of the debris and not for us to get to know (bland writing), or the actors aren't portraying them well (bland acting), or both. I'd literally re-cast the lead actors with dorkier people that are interesting, like Rainn Wilson and Nick Offerman, because there's no comedy. The subject and production of Debris is as interesting as Fringe, B+, but with less interesting characters/actors, D-, than Fringe, so it's a C, which is 6.5/10. Audiences tune into a show for the characters they resonate with, and if that's absent, then the story has to be amazing, and if the pilot, which is supposed to be a tent pole that holds up the season, is only a 6.5/10, or a C, this may get cancelled. I'm assuming a weird March 1st release date is Covid related, but at least there's something Scifi to watch.

I've enjoyed 1x1. Good show so far, I don't share your criticism. More special effects than I expected, which is nice. Looks like it will be a 7/10 show for me, could maybe even become 8/10, depending on the rest of the season. paisley1 wrote:Lighton, could you add a Forum link on the show page to this thread?
I posted https://forum.next-episode.net/viewtopi … 85#p167985 yesterday, that kind of stuff only santah can edit. You are (and everyone else is) welcome to post in that thread by the way.

My mistake, I thought you had access to the inner workings of the site. I suppose the serious straight laced tone and mood of Debris, like NCIS, is more suited for this subject, and not a playful one like Fringe/Eureka, so perhaps, that's what I find flat and boring. It's a pilot and that's never easy to get right, and we haven't even seen the rest of the cast yet, so perhaps the best is yet to come. (Please note: I just just finished marathoning all 5 seasons of Fringe, and left a post in the Fringe forum, so my brain can't help but compare.)

Definitely give this a shot, the special effects are great, it's totally worth it. Again, Western Canada (Vancouver) production. Watchable.

I couldn't care less where it was made, but I watched it and liked it. Definitely had a kind of X Files/Fringe vibe.
2020. Meh.

Re: Debris
S1 Ep2, It's Jonathon Tucker (Bryan) that bothers me, as I have a hard time hearing what he's saying because he mumbles his lines under his breath, it's so annoying. I've warmed up to Riann Steele (Finola), she's great. I'm going to constantly forget the names Bryan and Finola as they're such forgettable names to use for lead characters. As for plot, not a whole lot happened in this episode to move the story forward, but it's cool to see what the debris tech can do... ▼Spoiler ...Cloning. We also learned that they've figured out how to turn off the alien tech without any explanation as to how or when they learned to do this, which is a bit heavy handed, as every Fringe episode had some wild scientific explanation behind how to counter a fringe event, and this didn't have any discussion behind it, just a group of scientists in hazmat suits tinkering with tech until they found a way to turn it off. Kinda boring and a little too convenient.

I liked 1x2 and can live with that you said in the spoiler, paisley1. And I love that they mentioned/ featured Peeps! If you apply such strict criteria to every show you watch you'll miss out on many good ones.

Yeah, that's why i put the /s I Wasn't serious, I mean how could I possibly watch The Boys, with Butcher, Butchering the cockney accent I'm surprised they let it slip through though without someone catching it. Unless like I suspect, they kept it Americanised so as not confuse the main audience. "Hey Mike!, What did she say? What the Hell is a 'garij'??" "God damn it Barbara! She means 'garaaage' Go get me a beer!

Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

the last episode was a snooze fest. This could turn into a dumpster fire real quick if it doesn't get better and pick up pace.

As I said above, I liked 1x2. I always find it fascinating how good (or bad) different people find the same thing. P.S.: referring to episodes as 1x2 (or whatever) instead of "the last episode" helps everyone reading this thread at a later time... knowing which episode exactly was talked about.

Ya, I agree, 1x02 was slow, and the lead characters are bland, and the plot twists are a bit too convenient, and most of our viewing pleasure hinges on the debris tech fascinating us, but I'll take what scifi I can get these days.

Re: Debris
I'm giving it a few more episodes but so far the characters seem awful. And debris itself seems boring too. No explanation as to why it does what it does. Characters just randomly give some explanation out of the blue and it seems to pan out. Weird af. Quality is good though so maaaaaybe they have something coherent and interesting in the pipeline.

I can live with slow if the show is good. And I can live with weird. ▼Spoiler I never saw "instant accidental cloning" used anywhere before, looking forward to more weird ideas in the next episodes!

+1 Agreed. lighton wrote:I can live with slow if the show is good. And I can live with weird. ▼Spoiler I never saw "instant accidental cloning" used anywhere before, looking forward to more weird ideas in the next episodes!
▼Spoiler Cloning isn't new, but being fresh about it is, and I think Debris' take on cloning is creative and fresh. So many shows have cloning though; Orphan Black, Eureka, SG1, Atlantis, TNG, hell the Cylon's are all clones, but "instant accidental cloning" from a machine, that's a rare thing and pretty creative how it's used, and the closest I could come up with something similar is the movie Multiplicity (Not accidental), the TV series Living With Yourself on Netflix (Also not Accidental), and Star Trek Voyager S5xE17 called Course Oblivion is Instant Accidental Cloning, well, back in S4xE24 Demon is when it happened, and you don't realize that until mid way through Course Oblivion, but you all know what I mean, you've seen it. The thing is, the cloning is all really well fleshed out on every other show, and on Debris, it's akin to magic without explanation, and it just leaves an empty pit where extrapolation should be. Hopefully we start to get some technobabble soon.

I've seen it, but I don't recall that AT ALL! Voyager has been a while...
