Re: How many TV shows are you currently watching?
paisley1 wrote:After giving it some thought, I realize I'm into a lot of shows even though I thought I wasn't, it just doesn't feel like many shows, because they are so short, with most of them having around 10 episodes per season, and they can be binge watched in a day, and my level of interest is only moderate for about 75% of them. TV watching is different these days because before there was a show per day that I was totally invested in watching, that would air throughout the entire year with around 20-25 episodes, but now that doesn't really exist for anything good.
Try to spread out a show over a certain amount of days or weeks. Just because you can binge-watch it doesn't mean you have to. I was never tempted to do that (and never did). See what that does to your level of interest. If it's still only moderate most of the time, maybe you need to watch/discover better shows. paisley1 wrote:It's not a total wasteland out there on TV, it's just that seasons aren't as long, and the stories aren't quite as inspired as they once were, at least in my opinion. I'm always hopeful someone will produce something inspired that lasts for generations. We really were spoiled in the 2000's.
I didn't see your post when you posted it, but it's still time to disagree. There are so many good shows out there! Just a few for you that you didn't list: https://next-episode.net/messiah https://next-episode.net/devs https://next-episode.net/the-outsider https://next-episode.net/mr.-robot/ https://next-episode.net/preacher https://next-episode.net/the-boys And "lasts for generations" isn't really criteria that I - personally - find important. I want to watch something great now, that I enjoy/that inspires me now... not later. (And I hardly ever watch a show again later.)

Re: How many TV shows are you currently watching?
I feel you I'm currently at 122 Active Shows... it's hard to filter and if I miss something I tend not to notice for awhile... like I'm behind on The Sinner. I try to curate my series but for every program I drop, that's no longer fun or wasn't that good, 5 more new series premiere and either I'm starting my 4 Ep Test on them or just downright into them from the start. The hardest part for me when reviewing what I watch is dropping a series, but at the same time I was so much happier after losing most of the Arrowverse and The Rookie from my watch list. Good Luck! Sofie777 wrote:Sofie777 wrote:You can look at the list under here what I am watching. But these are the ones I watch right now: Another Life, Legion, The 100, Blood & Treasure, Younger, Suits, Private Eyes, Pearson, Krypton, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Elementary, Agents of SHIELD, Killjoys, The Rook, Poldark, Pennyworth, Instinct, and Whose Line is it Anyway. I watch episode for episode as chronologically to the airing time that I can manage (in Europe). I use the app SeriesGuide for that (has similarities to NE, but has other qualities). If I don't start a show within 4-5 episodes of the first season, I can forget about it. Some exceptions for Netflix and like. I don't like to binge, so if there is a show on Netflix, I mingle it with the others. For example : I have found out that I have to watch 3 shows each day (not more) until the fall season come. Then I watch Another Life as the third one each day. Some days life gets in the way, and I don't watch the third show at all, but it is ok. When AL is finished, I will watch 3 "ordinary" shows.
Stuff has changed since this post. I took on way too many shows last fall, so now I watch 114 shows. I am now in the week after Valentines Day and have over 200 shows in my VLC-list, and more added (and subtracted) each day. I hope I finish during summer, but most shows will start later than normal this year (because of you know what), so I will manage to catch up. I need to be more critical of the shows I take on. I am current on Outlander, Westworld and When Calls the Heart because "everybody" is talking about them.

What really annoys me is when someone quotes a huge long list of text and just replies "Thanks" at the end. FFS people!

Yes! Forum software should point out stuff like that to the user before accepting a post, teach the users. "Your reply is less than 10% in length of what you quoted, do you want to confirm with these 13 consecutive Captchas or edit your post instead?"

I envy your focus and ability to restrict yourself! My number of currently watched shows* is down to 9 (if I didn't forget any shows), but I just finished one of those and have only 30 minutes left for another show on that list. *where I've watched at least one episode in the last 4 weeks

During C19 my "currently watching" has dropped, it's about 8 shows. Last year it was about 15-20.

Maybe I was in a mood when I started watching it, but I only got like 15 minutes in and it felt like the poor mans Homeland, so I turned it off. I might try again. Take a running start at it.

This list is the bar for me. Highly intuitive and pulls on the heart strings. [...] I've seen all of DEVS (gong!), up to season 2 of Mr. Robot (yuck), none of The Preacher or Messiah

Like, how I like The Outsider? My general opinion of the first 5 episodes of The Outsider, comes after I just finished marathoning all 5 seasons of Fringe two days ago, I felt like this was a really well filmed but a long, slow, drawn out, serialized version of a typical Fringe event, but without humor or science or any character I could get invested in. Typical creepy Stephen King horror that I don't care about.

Re: How many TV shows are you currently watching?
Say paisley1, did you watch all of The Expanse, or did you give up before season 2? I gave up after about five episodes first time i tried watching it, but my friends wouldn't stop pestering me about watching more, so i did... And i don't regret the decision at all. Turned out to be quite the ride, I really like the realistic aspect of it, and it was a fascinating to see how the story progressed. Not to mention it has some really great characters and progression.

Hey Moze, ya, it was way less than that, it was one episode, and all I remember was that it looked like that garbage Toronto made TV that I hate, and I was right. So, its an aesthetic problem, and there's no getting over it with me. My faceballs just have no tolerance for the look of the Expanse, sorry. No amount of pestering is going to change that. I don't like how it's filmed. I don't like the sound. I don't like the sets. I don't like the characters. There is no hook in it for me. I just tried again on Amazon Prime, no way. However, I just marathoned all of Mr. Mayor, up to episode 7, and it's great! Great premise, sharp wit, not preachy, the comedic timing is still ironing itself out, but Bobby Moynihan is fantastic, he steals the show, I think everyone else is just trying to keep up. The lines are so clever, and poke fun at L.A., which I love. Tina Fey is an executive producer, so it has the feel of a proper comedy.

It kind of is poor mans Homeland, but more genuine at the same time. 6-7/10 from me.

Ya, that's kinda what it felt like last time I tried to watch it, like a 6.5/10. It just didn't hook me in.

Remember, Homeland was based on an Israeli series while Tehran is the original Israeli series that may show up as an Americanized version. Another excellent Israeli series is Fauda.

Hm, isn't Toronto and Canada the home of sci fi like, stargate and travelers etc.? Such a shame you cant get over the aesthetics of The Expanse, the hooks are a bit slow to manifest for sure, I did drop it as well, just based on my initial dislike of the main cast and the seemingly uninteresting characters, and it was a bit hard to follow every faction they where rapidly introducing. But it gets a lot better towards the end of s1, and sky rockets in s2 and onwards with new interesting characters and better progression for the main cast. I'm not claiming to be the brightest guy but i had no clue whatsoever where the story was going, and it was a delight to watch it unfold as it did. paisley1 wrote: However, I just marathoned all of Mr. Mayor, up to episode 7, and it's great! Maybe i'll try some comedy for a change, not finding the genre amusing these days after the office and parks where done, not to mention the cancellation of Louis CK.

Moze wrote:Hm, isn't Toronto and Canada the home of sci fi like, stargate and travelers etc.?
Oh, I love that you asked this question, and I can't wait to answer it. Yes, Canada is home to Scifi, but there are two very different camps. Eastern Canada (Toronto) and Western Canada (Vancouver). All the watchable scifi shows come from Western Canada (Vancouver): -Battlestar Galactica -Fringe -Travellers -Stargate SG1 -Stargate Atlantis -Smallville -The X-Files -Eureka -Debris -Resident Alien All the unwatchable scifi shows come from Eastern Canada (Toronto): -Alphas -Dark Matter -Warehouse 13 -The Expanse -12 Monkeys -Orphan Black -Killjoys -Defiance -American Gods -Star Trek Discovery -The Handmaids Tale And I have no idea why, but every time a scifi television series is made in Toronto, I can't watch it. And almost every time a scifi series is made in Vancouver, I love it. What's crazy, is that with a show like The Expanse, I could tell immediately that it was Toronto. Years of being Canadian, and having a healthy distaste of all things Eastern Canada, my eyes instantly rejected it. I know they say that filming in Vancouver is better because the air is really clear due to the rain which produces a nice quality to the image, but that's not it at all, it's usually the set design and interior aesthetic of a show made in Toronto that causes my brain to turn the channel. Maybe this is more of an American vs. Canadian thing, because all the Vancouver shows I've listed might be American production crews, and perhaps the Toronto shows I've listed are Canadian production crews, and they just have more of a pedigree for TV in the states than Canada, but I don't know for certain. I prefer it when American crews show up and hijack locations to make their scifi, like: -Lost in Space went to Drumheller Alberta -Tales from the Loop went to locations throughout Manitoba The aesthetic looks right when they do that.

Re: How many TV shows are you currently watching?
Interesting! Had no clue it was divided like this, and it totally makes sense when I see the list. Every show in the bottom list I've watched have the same problems as well. They usually feels "off" then gets better over time or is 100% garbage all the way through. I wonder if it's a cultural thing, or that they are just generally bad at writing, casting and directing. (Edit: I suppose you gave an edited answer to this)

Ya, I was still working out my thoughts, but, it's a pretty clear list of west good vs. east bad, and hard to define why. In general, and overall, Canada is the Scifi nation, and probably only because Vancouver is a cheaper flight from LA, and the exchange rate from USD to CAD makes it cheaper to film, or not, I still don't know.
