I'm fairly certain now; Westworld has shit the bed. There's just no gravitas to it any more. It lurches along from clunky scene to clunky scene and all with that fuckign dreadful 80's synth soundtrack clamouring along for the ride and seemingly trying to jarr you out of every goddamn moment. Sitting through episodes 4 and 5 has felt like some sort of pop culture obligation. Dare I fucking say it but if the show didnt have seasons 1 and 2 in its resume, and was launched as a standalone from season 3, the thing would be getting panned as another pretty looking hi-tech scifi thingy with forgettably plastic performances Re: WestworldFrustrated With Westworld Season 3? I rewatched seasons 1 and 2 prior to watching the last one. I really liked them (especially the first season) and I was looking forward to new adventures in the "real world". I was hoping that season 3 will be about "questioning the nature of our (human) reality" and was really excited. And then - I got disappointed, as it usually happens when you have great expectations. If season 3 weren't the part of "Westworld", if it were an independent series, I would think that it is an average science fiction and action show, with lots of shooting, fighting, special effects, weak and not very interesting story and pretty flat characters. Watchable, but forgettable. Something like "Altered Carbon" season 2, but filmed with much bigger budget. However, this season supposed to be the part of "Westworld" and should have continued where season 2 ended. It did, but in a strange and messy way. They relied heavily on special effects, shooting, fighting, racing, rioting while the story felt empty and confusing, with no real substance. They DID try to give something to the audience, but it just didn't work the way it supposed to. The only thing I liked was Maeve's story, but just the beginning of it, while she was still trapped in the virtual world. The rest was... meh. And the music was terrible. I know that they wanted to create the feeling of suspense with it, but such attempts hardly work if the story is boring. I'm happy that season 4 won't be filmed and aired soon. I still have to decide whether to continue watching this show or not. I'm not sure whether it will be able to recover after this... Re: WestworldI felt season 3 would have sat better as a 2 part TV special. as a tie in for season 2-3 instead. And maybe that was what they wanted to do, but weren't allowed with the contract they have for several seasons. The compromise could have been dropping to 8 episodes. I did like the feel of the future. What I really liked was the fact I believed so many parts of it could happen and the start of it all could be happening now. I felt that worked. Definitely still intrigued enough to watch season 4. "city morgue, you kill em, we chill em"

Yeah, I liked that "feel of the future" too. The only thing I disliked was that the car doors looked a bit too flimsy. But then it's really, really hard (expensive) to do "future cars" right/ fully convincing, as many other TV shows and movies have shown. The scale is massive and it's so beautifully captured you feel like every episode is a self contained movie. Is it great scifi? Yes, I like it and I'll watch more, but do I love it? No. I'd rather watch BSG, or Eureka, or Fringe, or SG1, or Lost, or Voyager. Funny scifi characters > Big Budget Dystopian without heart. Same goes for Altered Carbon and Lost in Space and Star Trek Discovery. I just don't care. If network tv would write characters we care about people will tune in again. 92 2021-02-17 13:00:11 (edited by g371 2021-02-17 13:00:34)Re: Westworldpaisley1 wrote:
I have the same feeling about this show, it's so fancy and shiny, but falls short to fully capture your attention. So it's like wow, but not wow Re: Westworldg371 wrote:
Yes, exactly, wow but not wow. Without becoming invested in any character, I become indifferent to the whole show. Come to think of it, that problem is systemic with all Jonathon Nolan and Christopher Nolan films! Interesting. Might be the reason why they don't win awards, they have the structure of films down, but don't know how to write human emotion very well. Spectacle without heart. Which makes sense with the subject of Westworld, and all of their movies. Very clinical and robotic concepts to their stories, and I really like all of them, but I don't love them. Wow but not wow.
