Re: Ending or Canceled TV Shows for the 2023-24 Season
scorpius074 wrote:‘The Society’ & ‘I Am Not Okay With This’ Canceled By Netflix Due To COVID-Related CircumstancesNetflix has reversed its Season 2 renewal decision for The Society. The YA drama, whose production was impacted by COVID-19, has been canceled and won’t film a second season. Additionally, Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of another coming-of-age series, I Am Not Okay With This. While there had been no official renewal, I hear comedy-drama I Am Not Okay With This had been quietly picked up for a second season, scripts were written, and it was fully on track to go into production. The Society was renewed last summer for a second season, which had been slated to premiere in late 2020. I hear the delayed season had been eyeing potential start of filming next month. According to sources, uncertainty around production dates and balancing the availabilities of a large cast like The Society, coupled with unexpected budget increases due to COVID led to the decisions on The Society and I Am Not Okay With This, which had been both well received by critics and fans and had strong support at Netflix. “We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This,” Netflix said in a statement to Deadline. “We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators, including: Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry at 21 Laps Entertainment for I Am Not Okay With This; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, casts and crews who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world.” This is something we will likely see more of as the months-long Hollywood shutdown due to the pandemic will create a logjam when trying to ease all series impacted by the shutdown back into production while mitigating higher production costs due to strict COVID-19 safety protocols and losses from the pandemic. Streamers and tech companies in general have been better positioned than traditional media companies in navigating the financial impact from the pandemic.
Source The cancellation was confirmed by Netflix. These episodes will continue to be available on Netflix. more...
I watched I Am Not Okay With This on the recommendation and found it to be a smart, compelling, well-balanced and intriguing psychological thriller in the tradition of the teen horror (superpowers) genre. Unfortunately it was barely on it's feet before it was cancelled by the Powers that Be... it is a shame more folks couldn't have experienced just how fantastic this 'modern day' Buffy was/could have been.

I can't believe Doc Martin is still going. I started watching it when it first started.

‘Stumptown’ Canceled: ABC Not Proceeding With Season 2; Cobie Smulders Series May Be Shopped ElsewhereEXCLUSIVE UPDATED: This will come as a shocker to Stumptown fans. The breakout series starring Cobie Smulders, which was renewed for a second season in May, will not be going forward with the Season 2 order. The studio behind the show, ABC Signature, plans to shop it and find a new home for it, I hear. Stumptown was part of the fall 2020 ABC schedule announced in June, slated to return to the Wednesday 10 PM slot it occupied last season. According to sources, a timing issue related to the production start delay made it impossible for the show to be ready for a fall launch when the network had scheduling needs for the 2020-21 season. As a result, the network made a decision to not move forward with the previously commissioned new season. The series, which films in Los Angeles, had not started production and did not have a firm start date when the call not to go with Season 2 was made this week. I hear the coronavirus pandemic played a significant role in the delay, which was also related to the extra time needed to get the scripts in good shape after the series changed creative direction with a showrunner change at the end of Season 1. I hear as a result, Season 2 of Stumptown would not have been ready until April, which is the end of the broadcast season, ultimately leading to the cancellation. The cast and the crew were just notified of the decision this afternoon. The well-received action dramedy is the latest series to become casualty of the COVID-related production shutdown, which scrambled schedules and led to networks reversing pickup decisions. Those include The Society and I’m Not OK With This at Netflix and I’m Sorry at TBS. As a high-end drama, Stumptown already was among the most expensive second-year broadcast TV scripted series. Additionally, with elaborate stunts, extensive location shoots and romance, Stumptown is the type of series most impacted by COVID-related restrictions, limiting the kind of scenes the show could do and leading to significant budget increases. One of the most anticipated new series of last season, Stumptown quickly developed strong fan following and emerged as a powerhouse in digital and delayed viewing. Based on a graphic novel series following veteran Dex Parios, it stars Cobie Smulders, Jake Johnson, Tantoo Cardinal, Cole Sibus, Adrian Martinez, with Camryn Manheim and Michael Ealy. Created and exec produced by Jason Richman, David Bernad, Ruben Fleischer, Greg Rucka, Matthew Southworth and Justin Greenwood are exec producers.

‘United We Fall’ Canceled By ABC After One SeasonABC will not be proceeding with a second season of United We Fall, its family comedy starring Will Sasso and Christina Vidal-Mitchell. The news is not surprising — the sitcom, a leftover from the 2019-20 season, got a summer burn-off run. Still, United We Fall performed respectably for a summer comedy over its eight-episode run. The series, which debuted July 15 and aired its finale on Aug. 26, was produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios. The swift cancellation is an illustration why Sony TV is getting out of the network comedy business over the outdated broadcast model.

Ink Master, Wife Swap, Battle of the Fittest Couples: Cancelled by Paramount, Is Yellowstone Next? There are lots of changes coming to Paramount Network. According to Variety, the cable channel is being rebranded to Paramount Movie Network sometime in 2021. As part of that change, the cable channel is planning to get out of the original TV series business and shift toward producing made-for-TV movies that star big-name actors. The plan is to produce 52 original films each year and air one per week. Chris McCarthy, president of entertainment and youth brands for ViacomCBS domestic media networks, said, “Made-for-TV movies provide all the creative upside and ability to work with great talent, without the full-time commitment of a series or feature. Plus, we’re maximizing our investment because we can build a valuable library to use across our streaming, cable, and global footprints.” Once per quarter, Paramount is expected to air a mini-series or large-scale series. Characters from those projects may be spun-off into their own series or movies. Yellowstone, which was renewed for a fourth season in February, will remain on the cable channel as part of that strategy. The brand change has been in the works for a while as Paramount has been cancelling scripted series or moving projects to new homes. The channel cancelled plans for a Sexy Beast series and dropped 68 Whiskey after one season. It’s unclear what will become of the upcoming Coyote series starring Michael Chiklis, Mayor of Kingstown from Taylor Sheridan, or Paradise Lost (in partnership with Spectrum) starring Josh Hartnett. What will happen to the unscripted TV shows that air on the channel? Bar Rescue and Lip Sync Battle will live on and move to other ViacomCBS channels. Meanwhile, Ink Master, Wife Swap, and Battle of the Fittest Couples will all be cancelled. At least some of the new Paramount Movie Network content is expected to end up on the Paramount Plus streaming service. CBS All Access will be rebranded with that title in 2021 and will feature a wide range of content from the ViacomCBS library.

‘Teenage Bounty Hunters’ Canceled By Netflix After One SeasonEXCLUSIVE: Netflix has opted not to pick up a second season of Teenage Bounty Hunters. The news comes nearly two months after the series’ August 14 debut on the streamer. Created by Kathleen Jordan, Teenage Bounty Hunters centered on fraternal twins Sterling (Maddie Phillips) and Blair (Anjelica Bette Fellini), who are looking for more trouble beyond their pristine Southern lifestyle. The twins team with experienced bounty hunter Bowser Jenkins (Kadeem Hardison) and start bringing in local criminals. The girls balance the hazards of their secret profession with the finer details of high school life including romance; advanced school work; and, of course, the popular kids. Sterling and Blair work to keep their academic lives and their questionable extracurricular activities separated. The show cracked the Nielsen Streaming Rankings Top 10 for the week of August 17-23. Jordan, Jenji Kohan, Tara Herrmann, Robert Sudduth and Black McCormick executive produced the 10-episode series. Jesse Peretz directed and exec produced the premiere episodes. Netflix goes straight-to-series on all of its projects, bypassing a pilot stage. Cancelling some series after Season 1 is equivalent to networks passing on some of their produced pilots.

Never heard of this show before. I've seen Anjelica Bette Fellini in https://next-episode.net/the-gifted, but hardly recognized her in the Teenage Bounty Hunters trailer because she looks younger than before! Will skip this show though.

‘Last Man Standing’ to End With Season 9 on FOX“Last Man Standing” is coming to an end — again. Fox announced Wednesday that the previously announced Season 9 of the Tim Allen multi-camera comedy will be the show’s last. The ninth and final season is slated to debut in January. This will mark the second time “Last Man Standing” has ended. The show originally ran for six seasons on ABC before being canceled in 2017. Fox then picked up it for a seventh season, which began airing in 2019. Upon its conclusion, the show will have filmed 194 episodes. “It has been an honor to be home for Tim Allen and ‘Last Man Standing,’” said Michael Thorn, president of entertainment for Fox Entertainment. “Millions of families have long enjoyed the show because, perhaps, they see themselves in the Baxters. The loyal affection they’ve shown proves just how much this series has meant to them. On behalf of everyone at Fox, a big, big thank you to ‘Last Man Standing’s’ brilliant cast, led by Tim, Nancy and Hector, as well as its writers and crew, headed by showrunner Kevin Abbott. We’ll be rooting them on throughout the season as they conclude what has been an impressive run.”

‘L.A.’s Finest’ Canceled By Spectrum After 2 SeasonsSpectrum has opted not to order a third season of cop drama L.A.’s Finest, an offshoot from the Bad Boys movie franchise headlined by Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, I have learned. The decision comes a little over a month after the show’s second season launched on the platform. Spectrum had no comment. Season 2 was originally scheduled to premiere on June 8, but was pushed to September amid the George Floyd protests against police brutality. All 13 episodes were released at once on September 9 as a weekly air pattern for Season 1. The first season of L.A.’s Finest is currently airing on Fox, which acquired the series for its fall schedule that was impacted by the pandemic-related production shutdown. It got off to a solid ratings start though the numbers have slipped since. L.A’s Finest, from creators Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, Sony Pictures TV, Jerry Bruckheimer TV and 2.0 Entertainment, originated as an NBC pilot. After it did not go to series, studio Sony Pictures TV found a new home for it at Spectrum as the service’s first original series. It had a strong launch, earning a second-season renewal.

‘The President Is Missing’ Series Not Moving Forward at Showtime Due to COVID-19 (EXCLUSIVE)Bill Clinton and James Patterson’s “The President Is Missing” will not be making it to the small screen, at least not at Showtime. The premium cabler has decided not to move forward with its buzzy pilot which starred David Oyelowo and was based on the book of the same name by Clinton and Patterson, Variety has learned exclusively from Oyelowo’s co-star Ann Dowd. Speaking at a junket for the new Netflix film “Rebecca,” Dowd revealed that a combination of COVID-19 and current political events were behind the prospective series’ demise. Another source close to the production confirmed that the pandemic played a significant part in the network’s decision. “[Production] stopped midway and then because of the pandemic, the relevance of it, things needed to be changed in the writing because of what happens to the President. It just wouldn’t have worked. It would have had to have been re-conceived,” Dowd said. News of the project being jettisoned comes more than three years after Showtime acquired the rights to the novel, ahead of its publication in June 2018. It will be interesting to see whether the project is repurposed elsewhere, given that Showtime won the rights in a highly competitive situation involving multiple other networks and streaming services, according to sources at the time. Former CBS chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves was said to have be instrumental in bringing the project to the network due to his longstanding relationship with the two authors. Anthony Peckham wrote the script for the pilot and and executive produced alongside Oyelowo, Clinton, Patterson, Bill Robinson, Leopoldo Gout, Christopher McQuarrie, and Heather McQuarrie. Jillian Share was on board as co-executive producing. The series was also set to star Michael Rooker, Janet McTeer, Ann Dowd, Medina Senghore, Paul Adelstein, and Gina Gallego. “The President Is Missing” centered around powerless and politically aimless Vice President James Martin (Oyelowo), who is unexpectedly elevated to the Oval Office when President Jillian Stroud (Dowd) goes missing, despite his every wish to the contrary. He walks right into a secret, world-threatening crisis, both inside and outside the White House.

‘Away’ Canceled By Netflix After One SeasonEXCLUSIVE: Netflix has opted not to pick up a second season of Away, its space drama series starring Hilary Swank. The decision comes a little over a month after Season 1 was released on September 4. When making renewal/cancellation decisions, Netflix brass analyze viewership versus cost. Away spent several weeks in the top 10 Nielsen streaming viewership rankings, peaking at No 2 for its first full week of release. Created by Andrew Hinderaker, Away stars Swank as American astronaut Emma Green. As Green prepares to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars, she must reconcile her decision to leave behind her husband (Josh Charles) and teenage daughter (Talitha Bateman) when they need her the most. As the crew’s journey into space intensifies, their personal dynamics and the effects of being away from their loved ones back on Earth become increasingly complex. Season 1 ended with Commander Green and her crew safely landing on Mars. The series is executive produced by Hinderaker, showrunner Jessica Goldberg, Jason Katims, Matt Reeves, Hinderaker, Edward Zwick, Swank, Adam Kassan and Jeni Mulein. Universal Television is the studio.

‘Americanah’ Limited Series Not Moving Forward At HBO Max After Lupita Nyong’o ExitsAmericanah will not be moving forward at HBO Max. The limited series had been a longtime passion project of Lupita Nyong’o who was set to star in and executive produce the adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s best-selling novel of the same name. Nyong’o’s Black Panther co-star Danai Gurira wrote the pilot and was to serve as showrunner. According to sources, the decision to not proceed with Americanah was made after Oscar winner Nyong’o dropped out because of a scheduling conflict. The show had received a 10-episode straight-to-series order at the streamer last year. It had been cast and ready to go when the coronavirus pandemic shutdown all production in March. The delays caused by the shutdown have scrambled the schedules of A-list talent who are usually booked a year or so in advance with little wiggling room. Americanah tells the epic story of Ifemelu (Nyong’o), a young, beautiful, self-assured woman raised in Nigeria, who as a teenager falls in love with her classmate Obinze. Living in a military-ruled country, they each depart for the west, with Ifemelu heading for America, where, despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple for the first time with what it means to be black. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous undocumented life in London. The series also was to star Uzo Aduba, Corey Hawkins, Zackary Momoh, and Tireni Oyenusi. Its demise was first reported by Variety.

‘Brave New World’ Canceled By Peacock After One SeasonEXCLUSIVE: Peacock has opted not to proceed with a second season of Brave New World. UCP, the studio behind the sci-fi drama series, based on Aldous Huxley’s groundbreaking novel, will shop it to other outlets. “There will not be Season 2 of Brave New World on Peacock,” the streamer said in a statement to Deadline. “David Wiener created a thought-provoking and cinematic adaptation. We’re grateful to the cast and crew who brought this world to life. We look forward to telling more stories with David in the future. This marks the first major TV series cancellation since Susan Rovner joined NBCUniversal earlier this month as Chairman, Entertainment Content, overseeing programming for television and streaming. Brave New World was part of Peacock’s inaugural original slate and the only homegrown scripted series available at launch in July. The big-budget drama did not generate a lot of buzz among critics and fans. Like most streamers, Peacock does not release performance information on its shows. [...] From UCP, in association with Amblin Television, the series is executive produced by Wiener and Morrison, along with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, co-presidents of Amblin Television. Wiener also serves as showrunner. Owen Harris directed the first two episodes and executive produces the series. Brave New World had a long journey to the screen. NBCUniversal’s Syfy and Amblin TV originally partnered to develop a scripted series based on Huxley’s classic in 2015. A year later, Morrison and Taylor were tapped to write the adaptation. In 2019, the project received a straight-to-series order by Syfy sibling USA Network. The series, whose Season 1 budget is said to be close to $100 million, later migrated to NBCU’s new streaming platform Peacock as its sole homegrown original scripted series at launch.

Filthy Rich and NeXt are both ending after one season on Fox, Deadline has confirmed. The network will not renew either series for a second season, though both shows will see out their current runs. Low ratings — both shows are averaging a 0.5/3 in the adults 18-49 demo — and uncertainty are behind the cancellation of the series, which were both originally intended for summer runs. NeXt has aired three episodes of its 10-episode order, while Filthy Rich has aired five of its 10 episodes. Created by Tate Taylor, Filthy Rich stars Sex and the City alumna Kim Cattrall as Margaret Monreaux, the matriarch of a mega-rich Southern family famous for creating a wildly successful Christian television network. After her husband dies in a plane crash, Margaret and family are stunned to learn that he fathered three illegitimate children, all of whom are written into his will — threatening their family name and fortune. Melia Kreiling, Aubrey Dollar, Corey Cott, Benjamin Levy Aguilar, Mark L. Young and Olivia Macklin co-star along with Steve Harris and Aaron Lazar.

‘Conan’ To End On TBS In June 2021; Conan O’Brien Extends Deal With WarnerMedia For Weekly Variety Show On HBO MaxConan O’Brien is getting out of the nightly game and has swapped his daily show for a weekly variety series on HBO Max. The move means that O’Brien will no longer front a late-night talk show for the first time in 28 years. Conan, which has aired on TBS since 2010, will conclude at the end of its 10th season in June 2021, WarnerMedia said Tuesday. He has fronted more than 1,400 episodes of the show, which launched after the comedian’s acrimonious departure from The Tonight Show. “In 1993 Johnny Carson gave me the best advice of my career: ‘As soon as possible, get to a streaming platform.’ I’m thrilled that I get to continue doing whatever the hell it is I do on HBO Max, and I look forward to a free subscription,” joked O’Brien. The move comes weeks after Jeff Ross, who exec produces Conan and has worked with the former Simpsons writer for many years, told Deadline that the pair had been considering their future. Ross told Deadline that he believes late-night shows are now “kind of dinosaurs in the business” and said that they were looking to do something different, as evidenced by this deal. “TBS and these linear cable networks, especially, are just like death. You know there’s no circulation, so you can’t do it forever. And [Conan] is ready for a change. We’ve got a lot of stuff going on between the podcast and the show and the digital business,” he said. Conan, which was re-tooled into a half-hour format in 2019, had previously been renewed through to 2022. The show’s Conan Without Borders travel specials featuring O’Brien traveling to other countries will continue to air on TBS, WarnerMedia said. Team Coco, which will produce the new HBO Max weekly show, is already in business with the streamer, making four stand-up specials featuring comedians including Chris Redd and Moses Storm. “28 years is a monumental achievement in late-night television,” said Brett Weitz, General Manager for TNT, TBS and truTV. “We’re incredibly proud of the groundbreaking work that Conan and his team have accomplished during the 10 years at TBS and are so glad that we will continue to have his presence on our air with the ‘Conan Without Borders’ specials. We celebrate his success and are glad to see it grow across our WarnerMedia family.” “Conan’s unique brand of energetic, relatable, and at times, absurdist, comedy has charmed late-night audiences for nearly three decades. We can’t wait to see what he and the rest of Team Coco will dream up for this brand new, variety format each week,” said Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer, HBO and HBO Max.

Black Lightning: Season Four to End The CW TV Series in 2021There’s a power outage in the Arrowverse. The CW has confirmed that the Black Lightning TV series will end with its upcoming fourth season. The final season kicks off on Monday, February 8th. It hasn’t been announced how many episodes have been ordered this time around but the past two seasons have had 16 installments each. [...] Though Black Lightning is on its way out, a Painkiller spin-off series, starring Jordan Calloway, is still a possibility. A backdoor pilot for the spin-off will air as part of Lightning’s fourth season. Of the show’s coming to an end, Black Lightning showrunner Salim Akil said in a statement: “When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre,” The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined: Black people want to see themselves in all their complexities.” “Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers, and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of superheroes to life for the culture.” “I’m very grateful to Peter Roth, Warner Bros. TV, Mark Pedowitz, The CW Network, and Greg Berlanti for their partnership and support of my vision at every step of this journey. While Season Four may be the end of one journey, I’m extremely excited to usher in a new chapter and continued collaboration with The CW as we tell the story of Painkiller.” Supergirl is also ending this season so, that will leave Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, The Flash, DC’s Stargirl, and Superman & Lois as Arrowverse shows on The CW.

‘The Expanse’ Renewed For Sixth & Final Season By Amazon Ahead Of Season 5 PremiereEXCLUSIVE: Amazon Studios has set an end date for The Expanse. The popular sci-fi drama has received an early renewal for Season 6, which will be its last. Not returning for the final season is original cast member Cas Anvar, who faced a slew of sexual misconduct allegations during the summer. The rest of the cast, led by Steven Strait, and longtime Expanse showrunner Naren Shankar will be back. The Season 6 renewal comes three weeks before the December 16 Season 5 debut on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories. I hear Season 6 tentatively is slated to begin production Janusary 20, with the target start date subject to change amid fluid pandemic conditions. The Alcon-produced The Expanse, based on James S.A. Corey’s best-selling novels, originally was picked up by Syfy, where it aired for three seasons. Following its cancellation in 2018, the show’s army of passionate fans launched a massive Save Our Show campaign, which helped seal the deal at Amazon. The space drama’s fourth season was released globally as an Amazon Original Series in December 2019. “From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honor the vision of the writers,” said Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, co-CEOs and co-Founders of Alcon Television Group and executive producers of The Expanse. “We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter. A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and executive producer. It continues to be an honor and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience.”

‘The Outsider’: MRC Shopping Series After HBO Passes On Season 2EXCLUSIVE: The Outsider, starring Ben Mendelsohn and Cynthia Erivo, has been put into turnaround after HBO opted not to proceed with a second season. MRC, the studio behind the drama series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, is taking Season 2 out to market. The pitch, originally presented to HBO, includes a script and bible for a continuation of the story beyond King’s book, which was the source material for Season 1. Series writer/executive producer Richard Price crafted the Season 2 storyline with King’s blessing, sources said. Centered on Erivo’s Holly character, it expands King’s universe, exploring the human, naturalistic and inexplicable with a sustained pervasive dread you can’t put your finger on. “We enjoyed our collaboration with Richard, Jason [Bateman], Andrew [Bernstein] and the MRC team, and we wish them well in continuing the world created by the brilliant Stephen King,” HBO said in a statement to Deadline. The project will be taken to premium networks and streamers, with MRC using its status as an independent to pitch it everywhere. The company has longstanding relationship with Netflix, where MRC has produced hit series House of Cards and Ozark. The Outsider series steadily built an audience on HBO — growing from 1.2 million viewers for its premiere to 2.2 million for the finale (+90%) — to become the network’s most-watched first-year series in the past three years with 11 million multi-platform viewers per episode. It also is believed to have done well in major international territories. 2019-20 TV Renewals And Cancellations “We thank HBO for a great partnership in the first season and for helping to bring in a massive audience who fell in love with The Outsider,” said MRC Television President Elise Henderson. “We are looking forward to finding a new home for this remarkable series. The Outsider originated as a limited series adaptation of King’s bestseller developed at MRC. While HBO bought and launched it as a drama series, the network brass ultimately decided to keep it as a limited series after hearing the Season 2 pitch. The show earned an Emmy nomination in the guest actor in a drama series category for The Outsider executive producer and director Bateman, who also has a recurring role on the show. The Haves and the Have Nots: No Season Nine? OWN Series Reportedly EndingThe eighth season of The Haves and the Have Nots just kicked off on OWN this week. While the series hasn’t been cancelled, it seems like the Tyler Perry drama is coming to an end in 2021 and won’t have a ninth season. Airing on Tuesday nights, The Haves and the Have Nots stars John Schneider, Tika Sumpter, Angela Robinson, Renee Lawless, Crystal Fox, Peter Parros, Tyler Lepley, Gavin Houston, and Aaron O’Connell. The drama centers on the complicated dynamic between the Cryer, Harrington, and Young families of Savannah, Georgia. In season eight of this drama series, Judge Cryer (Schneider) and his rich friends are all finding out what happens when personal flaws go unchecked. Karma has not been kind to the elite one-percenters. The eighth season of The Haves and the Have Nots currently averages a 0.10 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 873,000 viewers. Compared to season seven, that’s down by 60% in the demo and down by 34% in viewership. The series was once the cable channel’s highest-rated show but the premiere’s numbers put it much closer to the bottom of the list. Is it time for the show to end? New York Post recently ran a profile about Robinson under the title “Haves and Have Nots star breaks down its final season”. The article goes on to confirms that the series is ending by noting “It kicks off its final season Tuesday at 8 p.m. on the cable network.” and “Robinson tells fans to expect the final season of The Haves and Have Nots to be an emotional rollercoaster.” But wait, hasn’t the cast already filmed a ninth season? Maybe not. In 2019, Houston said that he was about to start filming the ninth season of the series. The season lengths for this series have been very inconsistent — ranging from nine to 44 episodes a season — so, OWN could have changed their plans about how the episodes would be grouped. OWN has been quiet about the show’s immediate future. However, Perry’s other shows on the channel have already ended. In 2017, Perry signed a deal to produce 90 episodes of television each year for ViacomCBS outlets (including BET and BET+) so that’s been keeping him very busy. It’s unclear how many episodes in season eight but hopefully, The Haves and the Have Nots will have a satisfying conclusion.

‘One Day At a Time’ Canceled By Pop, Will Be Shopped By Sony Pictures TVAlmost two years after Netflix canceled One Day at a Time after three seasons, the praised reimagining of Norman Lear’s beloved 1970s sitcom is losing its network home again. And, just like it did in the spring of 2018, the studio behind the reboot, Sony Pictures TV, plans to shop the series to other outlets. Pop, which aired One Day at a Time’s abbreviated fourth season earlier this year, has opted not to order more episodes. The ViacomCBS ad-supported cable network in 2019 rescued the series after its cancellation by Netflix in a complex deal that included encore airings on sibling CBS. A lot of things have changed since then. Following the merger of CBS and Viacom, Pop moved from the CBS to the Viacom side of the company, joining Chris McCarthy’s Entertainment & Youth division. Pop has since pulled away from original scripted programming; following the end of Schitt’s Creek, One Day at a Time was the network’s last remaining scripted series. Season 4 of One Day at a Time, which was cut short by the pandemic, was simulcast on Pop and sibling TV Land. The series, a reimagining with a Latino family, did significantly better on classic sitcoms-focused TV Land, raising speculation that, if One Day at a Time was renewed, it would move to TV Land. The last test for the show was its recent run on CBS, 45 years after Lear’s original premiered on the network. With ODAAT‘s performance on CBS expected to factor into ViacomCBS’ decision whether to renew the Sony Pictures TV-produced comedy for a fifth season, Lear and Gloria Calderon Kellett, who co-developed and co-runs ODAAT with Mike Royce, in September made the case why viewers should watch the comedy on CBS. But ratings for ODAAT, the only only Latino show on broadcast this fall were modest. Sony Pictures TV plans to exhaust every avenue for keeping One Day at a Time alive. I hear the studio has options on the cast until the end of December. ODAAT stars Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Izabella Gomez, Marcel Ruiz, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rita Moreno.

‘Superstore’: NBC Comedy To End With Season 6Cloud 9 is closing for good as NBC’s Superstore is coming to an end with its sixth season. The network is ending the show after this current run – taking the total number of episodes of the single-camera comedy to 113. It comes after America Ferrera departed the show earlier this season. Ferrera, who was set to exit at the end of season five, guest starred in the first two episodes of this season, which returned at the end of October. The show returns on Thursday January 14 at 8:30pm with 11 more episodes to air this season. It is the latest comedy move at NBC, which pulled Connecting last month. The network has Brooklyn Nine-Nine returning in 2021 and will have high hopes for new shows including Mr. Mayor, Young Rock and Kenan, which are all set to debut next year.

Helstrom: Cancelled, No Season Two for Hulu SeriesThough there’s still plenty of evil to vanquish, Daimon and Ana are out of work. Hulu has cancelled the Helstrom TV series so, there won’t be a second season of the fantasy horror series. Based on Marvel Comics characters, the Helstrom TV show stars Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, Elizabeth Marvel, Robert Wisdom, Ariana Guerra, June Carryl, and Alain Uy. In the story, Daimon (Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Lemmon) are the offspring of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. Working together, with a complicated dynamic, they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills. The 10 episodes of the first (and only) season were released on October 16th. The cancellation marks the end of live-action shows produced under Jeph Loeb’s Marvel Television unit. It was reported in December 2019 that no new series would be developed by Loeb’s group. Two animated series, M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey, are still in the works at Hulu. Though Helstrom has ended, there are plenty of Marvel TV shows in the works at another streaming service — Disney+. Last week, on Disney Investor Day, details about 11 upcoming Marvel TV series were released.

‘Arrow’ Spinoff ‘Green Arrow and The Canaries’ Not Going Forward At the CW, ‘The 100’ Prequel Still AliveThe CW is officially not moving forward with Green Arrow and the Canaries, its planned spinoff from long-running superhero series Arrow. Green Arrow and The Canaries aired as an episode of Arrow‘s final season in January. The other outstanding CW planted spinoff, The 100 prequel, which aired as part of the survival drama’s final season, remains in contention. The options on the casts of both offshoots expired last year. “They are very much in active discussions to see what we can do,” the CW President Mark Pedowitz said in May about the fate of both projects, produced by Warner Bros. TV. “I’ve had many discussions with Warner Bros, we have a strategy involved — hopefully we can pull it off.” I hear the network and the studio explored the idea of the Green Arrow and the Canaries and The 100 prequel running jointly on the CW and WarnerMedia’s HBO Max. (Arrow and The 100 stream on Netflix.) With all of the CW’s newer series, following the end of the output deal with Netflix, available on HBO Max, that was considered a viable possibility. It could still happen for The 100 prequel. (For the status of the other 2020 broadcast pilots, read our story.) Starring Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy, Green Arrow and the Canaries was set in 2040 in Star City and Mia Queen (McNamara) had everything she could have ever wanted. However, when Laurel (Cassidy) and Dinah (Harkavy) suddenly showed up in her life again, things took a shocking turn and her perfect world is upended. Tara Miele directed the episode written by Arrow showrunner Beth Schwartz & co-creator/executive producer Marc Guggenheim, executive producer Jill Blankenship and co-executive producer Oscar Balderrama. The project hailed from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros Television.

‘Animal Kingdom’ Renewed For Sixth & Final Season By TNTTNT’s popular crime drama Animal Kingdom has set an end date. Ahead of the Season 5 premiere, the network has renewed the series for a sixth and final season. I hear the cast and crew were notified in November about the pending pickup of Season 6, which is eying a February production start. Season five of the show, which stars Shawn Hatosy, Ben Robson, Jake Weary, Finn Cole, Leila George, Rigo Sanchez and Jon Beavers, will premiere this summer on TNT. (see key art on left) With Animal Kingdom and Claws both heading toward the end of their runs, Snowpiercer remains the only ongoing scripted series on TNT, which has been shifting its programming focus to unscripted fare to compliment the WarnerMedia network’s sports slate. A consistent ratings performer and strong younger viewers draw, Animal Kingdom reached 27 million viewers in Season 4 across all platforms, with the premiere retaining its audience from the previous season’s average. The series also ranked among 2019’s top 10 cable dramas (P18-49, L+7, ad-supported cable).

‘Insecure’ To End After Season 5; Issa Rae Thanks “Tremendous Support Of Our Audience”After four sometimes awkward and often acclaimed seasons on HBO, Insecure will come to its conclusion with the upcoming fifth season. “Prentice and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning and kept faith in us to see our vision through the end,” co-creator and star Issa Rae told Deadline today of the Emmy nominated comedy she executive produces with Prentice Penny. “We always planned to tell this story through five seasons, but we couldn’t have made it this far without the tremendous support of our audience,” the best selling The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl author and recently minted Television Academy Executive Committee member added. “I feel blessed beyond measure to bring our characters’ stories to an end, on-screen at least.” With all its scripts completed, the fifth and final season of Insecure is expected to go into production later this month. Starring its lead cast of Rae, Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, Natasha Rothwell, and Amanda Seales, the show will return later this year, HBO says. Based on Rae’s online series Awkward Black Girl, the Larry Wilmore co-created Insecure focused on the trials, tribulations and twists of LA-based Issa as she negotiated love, life and friendship (especially with Orji portrayed Molly). The Golden Globe and NAACP Image Award nominated series debuted on HBO on in October 2016 and concluded its fourth season with a Penny helmed and penned finale last June. Insecure was renewed for what is now its last season back in May 2020 by the AT&T-owned HBO.

‘High Maintenance’ Not Returning For Season 5 At HBOAfter four seasons, HBO’s pot-themed comedy series High Maintenance has come to an end, Deadline has confirmed. “Co-creators Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair have decided to take a break from producing High Maintenance to pursue other projects,” HBO said in a statement. “We look forward to hearing what they come up with next.” The season 4 finale aired on April 3, 2020. High Maintenance centered around The Guy, a marijuana dealer played by Sinclair, and told a variety of stories about New York lives. The critically praised series, which made the leap from the web to TV, had been an unlikely success story. It painted a uniquely authentic portrait of New York with empathy and insight, telling amusing, surprising, sometimes moving and always poignant tales of denizens who are usually just faces on the crowded sidewalks of Brooklyn. Blichfeld, Sinclair and Russell Gregory executive produced. Willy Friedman, Gwen Bialic and Emi Irikawa produced. Deadline’s sister pub TVLine was first to report the news.

Channel 4 Reverses Decision To Renew IFC Co-Produced Matt Berry Comedy ‘Year Of The Rabbit’EXCLUSIVE: Channel 4 has back-tracked on its decision to commission a second season of Victorian-era comedy crime caper Year Of The Rabbit after the coronavirus pandemic forced the British broadcaster into £150M ($205M) of content cuts. Channel 4 renewed Matt Berry’s Year Of The Rabbit in February last year, funding the Objective Media Group (OMG) show alongside AMC-owned U.S. cable network IFC. But now, OMG is on the hunt for a new partner for the comedy. “Year Of The Rabbit is a victim of the devastating effects of Covid,” OMG chief executive Layla Smith told Deadline. “IFC are very committed to the show, but we will need to find another partner — and we’re working on that.” The show stars Berry as a detective in Victorian London, who fights crime alongside his hapless partner, played by Freddie Fox, and the country’s first female police officer, performed by Susan Wokoma. Recommissioned by Channel 4 in February last year, it was written by Berry and Emmy-winners Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil (Veep).
