Topic: "Special" episodes

This is one example from my current watchlist:

Every so often, random extra material gets added as content to a show, sometimes years after the fact.

A lot of this just feels like spam. I really do not care about "making of" type stuff. The third item in that list might be interesting to know about, but is also utterly irrelevant.

At the same time, some shows like e.g. Doctor Who have some of their proper episodes (e.g. christmas) also listed simply under "Special".

It would be nice if these were at least sorted into proper content, extra content and background material. This might not be entirely possible from the data sources available, but at least some superficial filtering would be nice, maybe by scanning the descriptions for certain phrases or comparing a season's episodes with IMDB or something like that.

Regardless of whether or not this can be done, it would also be nice to have an option to ignore specials entirely, ideally on a per-show basis.

Did I miss any existing features here?

There's an option in the sitewide settings here <Don't show special episodes anywhere on the site> that will hide all special episodes from next-episode. I'm not sure if this is still a premium-only feature, or whether you're a premium user, but if you don't have that option then the former must be the case. I've always been reluctant to enable that option because I might end up missing out on something interesting or important. Your Doctor Who example is one of many reasons for my unwillingness. I see the same season two specials of The Boys, and as a quick test, they disappeared after enabling that option. Having the ability to ignore Specials on a per-show basis would be ideal indeed. Hopefully santah agrees.

Agreed, there are some shows, usually UK ones that have a Christmas Special episode that continues the story.  Downton Abbey was another one of them.

A good idea, I like it.  Not sure how doable it is though.

DRM "manages access" in the same way that Prison "manages freedom".

Re: "Special" episodes

You can't turn off specials per show, but you can do it globally here:

https://next-episode.net/settings?action=general

As for what some_one is suggesting - it makes sense, but there is no way to do it via the current data sources we have ...

Making it available per show is one of the things I am suggesting. As both scorpius074 and I explained above, the feature is not particularly usable as a global setting since it would also hide some proper episodes.

Adding a per-show option could be very useful.

It is most likely not possible to do reliably, but even doing it a bit would already be nice.

As I suggested, it would be possible to cross-reference the data with more data sources.

Filtering for phrases would be even less reliable but could also fall under the "better than nothing" category.

The categorization part, of course, is more of a long-term suggestion. It could help.
The per-show special-blocking could be more of a realistic short-term idea.

Re: "Special" episodes

Yeah, I've turned Specials off because too much crap was shown. Hopefully I won't miss too much good stuff. sad
