Yes, you've missed it. ▼Spoiler The premise of the show is that everything happens on tram lines. You do C now because of B, which was a result of A. Since A was A (and not KSZUW82), B had to happen, and thus your action, C, was a direct result of it. You didn't have a choice. I don't claim I understood 100% of every facet, but the way I understood it is that DEVS is able to compute everything not only forwards (predicting the future), but also backwards: what was the B that had to happen/ had to be present in order for C to happen, and what was the only A possible to get B as a result? Radical stuff. I did stumble over the 'multiple angles' thing myself. I think it's not that big of a deal... if it's able to correctly compute A -> B -> C for people, adding some angles is child's play.
▼Spoiler But the thing is, the computer would have to calculate the infinite possibilties, which surely would take an infinite about of time to do??? And then, if somehow it did manage to record all of history and every new infiinite timeline, I am supposed to believe that this computer was capable of showing every single event on video screen the events as they happened, or were going to happen. Just too much of a leap for me. I guess I'm over-thinking it

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
Hehe, yes... like with many good shows and movies, a certain amount of suspension of disbelief is required to fully enjoy it. On the other hand, what will become possible with quantum computers sooner or later could be quite something! It seems fitting to come back to my first post in this thread, my "absolute favorite movie or TV show dialogue of 2020:
▼Spoiler New guy: How many qubits is it running? Boss: A number... that seems pointless to express as a number.

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
I thought Devs was purely amazing. I thought it was one of the most emotionally moving, thought-provoking, visually stunning, and outstandingly ambitious pieces of cinematic art I've seen in a while. I was intrigued just enough to want to keep watching, partly because I was invested in the story from the jump but even more because I was impressed by certain elements of the show. The different depths this show has are interesting enough IMO and can mean a lot of different things to many different people. Ultimately my take from this mini-series—through all the surface layers—is that in the end, it was really a story about love at its core. I also love how Devs came full circle in regards to Ex Machina; not just with title sorts but also with the true meaning behind both stories. It's the perfect companion piece. Alex Garland has indicated that there will not be a second season of Devs. Instead, there's a possibility that the cast may be reuniting in the future for an entirely different project. This was the second straight series I've seen that has held my interest in as many weeks. I finished Messiah the same week the final episode of Devs dropped and ended up binging that in two days' time. Am I on course for a hat-trick? I plan on starting Into the Night, later on tonight. Maybe I should consult with lighton on what to watch next after that?

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
scorpi, you got that dead right. ▼Spoiler I don't think you needed to put Deus in a spoiler alert though! Glad you loved this and Ex Machina, as do I and they surely are companion pieces. What did you think of Annihilation?
I don't watch trailers. I never have and I never will. I don't like Tom Cruise, James Cameron and there's lots more to add, give me time I don't like Star Wars or Star Trek or any superhero *hit

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
Annihilation was one of the top sci-fi movies I've seen in 2018, and it's an all-time fave. I thought Garland outdid himself in this one—creating a world of profound beauty and complexity—while splicing together ideas from other cinematic and literary works. But Annihilation also marched to its own unique beat. The movie did an excellent job of validating so many different facets of the human experience. I plan on watching it again soon at some point. One of the things I love about Annihilation is that there is so much more going on than we're explicitly told. I'm sure there's more for me to discover. When I think of the top sci-fi/horror gems of 2018, Annihilation tops my shortlist. The reason why I hid that behind spoiler tags is because I had no idea about the true meaning/spelling of the word. I think it was around episode seven or eight that it was mentioned. I didn't watch or read any Garland interviews and inside specials pertaining to Devs before diving in, so I was blissfully oblivious to the notion. I wanted to show the same respect for anyone watching Devs for the first time.

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
Seems lighton agreed with you as he edited it! Personally I didn't get it until Forest said it was latin in, as you say, ep 7 or 8. But I still don't think of it as a spoiler. I shall be more aware/careful in the future. Glad you liked Annihilation too. I prefered Devs and Ex Mach but I'll give it another watch at some point too. I see The OA on your list. If you haven't seen anything else involving Brit Marling then deff check out Another Earth. It's great! She co-wrote and produced it and of course starred in it.

Ah... interesting idea. Kinda like https://next-episode.net/american-horror-story supposedly does it, using more or less the same cast in different roles each season. scorpius074 wrote:This was the second straight series I've seen that has held my interest in as many weeks. I'm happy that I got to introduce all three shows here in the forums, the first two being the best I've 'recently' watched for sure! https://next-episode.net/into-the-night is also totally recommended, albeit slightly less great. I've got no more "must watch" recommendations lined up at this point though. scorpius074 wrote:The reason why I hid that behind spoiler tags is because I had no idea about the true meaning/spelling of the word. Well said... for me that was the main spoiler of the show! Hadn't thought about that possible resolution for a second.

I enjoyed the surreal atmosphere of this series. The photography was beautiful, the choice of music unusual and the ideas very interesting and thought-provoking.

Plonker? Are you from London in the 1980's?

I'm not a native English speaker, so I will pretend that I don't understand. I like science fiction and give every science fiction series at least a try.

▼Spoiler The show does, of course, not hold up to the science, but a good bit better than you are giving it credit for. What you may have missed is that the kind of machine they are working with are not computers but quantum computers. It is a common misconception that they are simply the same, just better and faster; no, they work based on an entirely different understanding of physics, on a level where reality as we understand it becomes meaningless. Seriously, look into it, it is fascinating stuff, and they already exist. Within the story, they are trying to use some of these effects to emulate an object (dead rat) in its entirety and just so happen to notice they can somehow derive the rest of the universe from it. Not very likely, but not neccessarily impossible either and, at any rate, the one belief that needs to be suspended here.
This show was really nice. They did good work on atmosphere, pretty much every scene seemed to invoke exactly the kind of impression it was supposed to on me. There were a number of things I wanted to criticize at first, and still I ended up no longer wanting to later, because it managed to make up for it almost every time. Still, a few things:
Somehow, despite almost every character being a software engineer and/or physicist of some form, somehow they keep having to explain the extremely basic concept of determinism. This seemed odd to me. A personal pet peeve here: determinism and free will are not opposites. Even if every decision you will ever make is already known, you are still the one who makes them. The future is made up of decisions you will quite simply have already made by then. ▼Spoiler The show seemed to at least implicitly agree with me there by painting it as the evil thing to live by, but maybe in the end it did not and just wanted to go with plain old "no, you always can choose (somehow)".

Translation for you, then: "Show looked good, sounded interesting and had some interesting ideas. Everything was kinda weird." I pretty much agree with Asteria.
