Topic: Follow creators on Next Episode?

Now that the "follow actors" infrastructure has been set up, how about adding a way to follow show creators too?

I've found that creators* are far more predicative of me liking a show or not than actors*.

*who I like

Re: Follow creators on Next Episode?

Follow My Creators sounds like a good idea to me. I like it! Almost sounds like something out of a Westworld script. I'm simply basing this from the Top Charts section (From My Creators). Followed Creators would most likely be the end result.

We always had the ability to follow show creators from the show pages (as well as From My Creators), but there's no way to currently filter those individual creators against the Top Charts and Browse sections, or receive site/email notifications. Following a show creator should allow us to do just that. Let's see what santah thinks. smile

On a side note, I'm really digging the addition of "what I follow". I discovered some promising shows coming soon and in-development over the past few days.

Re: Follow creators on Next Episode?

Following creators is coming for sure, I almost released it the same time with following actors, but I decided to space them out so I can better monitor for issues and things that can be improved.

I'm not sure if filtering by creators in the top charts will work well. I'm yet to try it, but I have some doubts.

Another thing I'm planning to add (but not have developed yet) is a notification for a show (on your watchlist) that just got a trailer.

My issue with the top charts is that recommendations are based on the shows in my watchlist, not the shows in my watchlist that I actually gave a good rating! smile (I want to keep all the shows that I've (at least partially) watched, but don't want the ones I've rated with 3 stars or less as a basis for recommendations.)

Sounds good! Just by having added actors/actresses?

Perfect, let's discuss that here: https://forum.next-episode.net/viewtopic.php?id=9920

I hear what you're saying. I'm a little more forgiving since I don't mind recommendations based on shows I've rated with 3 stars. But that largely depends on how one views "3". There are different factors for different people when it comes to rating a show. In a 5-star ratings system is a 3 just average or I don't really care? Does it mean something else entirely different? For me, a 3 is somewhere between average and borderline good, leaning more towards average, with potential if there are more seasons to come. If it improves, I'll increase my rating. If not, I'm more likely to drop it if it gets worse. Now 2 stars or less is a whole nother story. I don't think I have any shows in my watchlist that were rated by me with 2 stars or less. If I was that disappointed in a show, then chances are it's no longer in my watchlist. In the end, it's all subjective anyway. Whatever shows I think deserve 2 stars or less might be 4 stars or more in someone else's book and vice versa.

Which is why I don't put too much stock in the ratings when it comes to discovering new shows. I instead focus on the trailer(s) (including inside & behind the scene looks), synopsis, creators, writers, producers, directors, cast, trusted reviews and forum topics for the most part. I tend to explore the Browse section more, but with the Top Charts, my main focus has always been Upcoming, and From My Creators. I tend to check out Recommended and Trending from time to time out of curiosity. I don't mind putting forth a little effort scrolling past some of the more unsavory hits I may receive every now and then. I actually got a few good hits based on some of those 3-star rated shows by me. Some of which I actually ended up giving a higher rating than the shows the recommendations were based on.

I don't think anyone has ever touted the discovery chart as a perfect system. I believe santah mentioned last summer that he was working on an additional type of discovery chart based on show page visits. You'll probably need to reach out to him for more info and updates.

And also the channels that I follow in the menu section. I'm currently following more channels than actors at the moment, but with the addition of the new menu, I'm more prone to start there. And most of my hits were shows in early development that currently have no cast. I hope none are stuck in development hell lol. I received a couple by notification, but most of my eyecatchers came from me clicking on the channels/actors links in "what I follow" and browsing. Here are a few that I didn't know about...

Foundation (I knew about this early on, but information was scarce at the time across most external sites. I had no idea it was added here. I'm very much looking forward to this. smile) [Followed actor: Jared Harris]
Contraband
The Continental
Jupiter's Legacy (Followed actor: Ben Daniels)
Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045
Power Book's II, III, IV, and V (Discovered this because of Joseph Sikora, which led me to books II, III, and IV)
The Gilded Age (Followed actresses/actor: Christine Baranski, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Morgan Spector)
Vikings: Valhalla (I was already aware of this show, but didn't know it was added to the site)
Jack Reacher (Also had no idea this was already added to the site)

Also keep in mind that I recently expanded my followed channel list from a few to a lot. I'm sure there are some kinks that need to be ironed out, and improvements pending on the horizon, but I'm also sure at some point it will all pay off. Especially for me when it comes to receiving notifications for recently added shows by others from the channels, actors/actresses, and soon to be creators, that I follow.

I've put it on hold for now as I didn't find a good way to use that data. Will eventually make it happen though.
