Topic: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
https://next-episode.net/devs Watchlists: 2425
A computer engineer investigates the secretive quantum computing development division in her company, which she believes was behind the disappearance of her boyfriend. By filmmaker Alex Garland, who has made a name for himself over the past few years with films such as Ex Machina and Annihilation.
I haven't even watched half of 1x1 and must say... wow! Even better than I expected. So far it's like... hmm... Mr. Robot minus the hacking and mental issues, plus Silicon Valley minus the funny bits, plus a good dose of mystery, plus something else I can't really put my finger on. Great design work! And the show contains my absolute favorite movie or TV show dialogue of 2020:
▼Spoiler New guy: How many qubits is it running? Boss: A number... that seems pointless to express as a number.
Currently 8.1/10 at IMDb.

Hmm, sounds like it's right up my alley. I will definitely check this out.

Yes, do it! I've finished 1x1 now and was really surprised by the plot twists I didn't see coming at all! Great show.

Found this show to be extremely boring and pointless... Got halfway through episode 1 and just drifted off doing something completely different; my laundry.

I like this, but good God, the Chinese female lead's acting is appalling. What's with all the over-the-top hysterical breathing? I know she's under pressure, stressed etc., but come on.

I just finished 1x2, you're talking about that phone scene, right? IMHO that was totally realistic. I've been in a very stressful situation myself (close call), and while I didn't pay attention to my breathing while it was happening, I did notice half a minute (or so) later that my pulse rate had about doubled... and probably I was breathing somewhat like her.

The phone scene, and then it's a whole lot worse in ep3 in another scene. I've been in alot of stressful situations (who the hell hasn't?) and I don't sound like her! I just don't rate her as an actress. I like the show though so I will stick with it.

The hacking and mental issues were my favourite part of Mr.Robot, and the funny bits in Silicon Valley are why I watched it. But i'll give this a go as I love Offerman.

Just watched 1x3. You can't really criticize it this time though because... ▼Spoiler ...it was done intentionally (to sell the story)! Well played. @ Deke:

I totally enjoyed the "Does anything ever happen without a reason?" conversation in 1x6. And I really like the show's pace (in combination with how it zigs and zags)... it's contemplative in a way hardly any other show is.

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
I really enjoyed watching 1x7! The "one second projection" near the beginning was cool. ▼Spoiler I had already almost expected the bum's involvement a few seconds before he showed up in that critical moment, but never expected anything in that direction from him in any previous episode. Love it! And my favorite line from this episode: We fuck 'em up by hanging out in your apartment for a day?
I don't want the show/season to end!

I think this started off really well, but then disappeared right up its own arse, with crazy pseudo science and I still never liked her acting ability one bit. The whole thing just didn't make any sense to me - maybe I'm not clever enough! But I still enjoyed it more than I enjoyed Westworld - what has happened to that show?!

Haven't watched the last episode yet, but totally enjoy watching the show (and Westworld). And I'm not the only one. The IMDb ratings are above average, and this author likes it too: Frustrated With Westworld Season 3? Try Hulu's Devs https://www.gamespot.com/articles/frust … 0-6476151/

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
My first experience of Alex Garland was 28 Days Later (he did the screenplay) but I didn't notice his name attached although I did think the film was very good. I have not read any of his novels or seen The Beach. His name came to my attention for Ex Machina which was really good and I thought Annihilation was very good too. So when I heard about him writing and directing Devs I was quite excited. I promptly forgot about it until I stumbled across it on here so I sat down to watch it and after 2 eps I am loving it. No real faults as yet. Pretty much great in every way. Incidentally the only other thing I've seen involving him is Sunshine which I thought was very average, he did the screenplay on that. Edit: He was an exec producer on 28 Weeks Later, which was okay. Pretty decent really.
I don't watch trailers. I never have and I never will. I don't like Tom Cruise, James Cameron and there's lots more to add, give me time I don't like Star Wars or Star Trek or any superhero *hit

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
Thanks vapdne, didn't know all of that. I've finished season 1 now... damn! It's a solid 9/10 from me, the greatest show since https://next-episode.net/messiah. (Assuming they can keep up the quality, ) I really hope for another season, even if https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/devs … newed-yet/ writes that "Devs appears to be a close-ended mini-series so, it’s unlikely to be renewed for a second season." ▼Spoiler Exploring different parallel universes could be fun! In case you've missed it: in the 1x8 version of Lily walking with Sergei to the door of the big office building in the morning, Lyndon and Stewart are sitting outside, talking. In the 'original' 1x1 version, those guys weren't there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devs_(miniseries) says that "It received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its imagination, acting, and soundtrack." I also appreciated the often slow-but-great camera work (and how they made everything look in general), adding to the feel of the show.

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
Thanks lighton. I *think* Devs is just a one off mini series. Who owns the rights to make more I have no idea but I would assume Garland would not be involved in a writing or directing role. And in my opinion, it is his directorial style and writing that make this show so good, as well as the films mentioned above. (He wrote and directed Ex Machina and Annihilation.)

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
Wow, just finished ep 5 and I love this show. Amazing. I really enjoyed the use of Free's Oh I Wept at the start and finish of the ep. Fantastic song from a fantastic album. Got into that when I was 13 and now I'm in my 40's and I still love it. Mind, the first music that really got me was The Beatles (Red Album) when I was 12 so not too surprising that most of the music I listened to when I was a teen is really good!

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
Finished it. Amazing. Really, really good. Few points, if you liked this you should watch Ex Machina and probably Annihilation. The next thing Garland writes and directs I am watching, absolutely no doubt about that. I'd be amazed if another season was made, it does not need one anyway. According to NME (last summer) Garland and Boyle are discussing a sequel to 28 Weeks Later. For me I'm not that fussed about that. Boyle is hit and miss for me. Might be good might be average. And I'd imagine our current virus problems would quite possibly scupper it for at least a couple of years anyway. As I often browse the forums looking for recommendations by people who liked other stuff I liked I'm going to compare this (in no particular order) to The OA, The Leftovers, Better Call Saul, Fargo, The Expanse, Undone, Counterpart, The Strain and 12 Monkeys as shows I've watched over the last few years and have found them to be breathtakingly good. Could honorably mention quite a few others as well and I'm a little iffy about including 12 Monkeys on the short list but it is there.

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
I'm always surprised by the superlatives thrown around in these forums so easily, and that post is the same. I like 28 Days Later, everything else Garland has done I think it pretty average, and I've seen them all. The same goes for Boyle, I like Trainspotting (loved it) but everything else, is... just ok. Devs just made no sense to me. It looked great, but the pseudo-science was just far too much to swallow, it just didn't stand up to any scrutiny. Yes, I know it's sci fi but... I dunno. I'm glad I watched it though.

Re: Devs [Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi]
Garland only wrote the screenplay for 28 Days, nothing more. If you didn't like Ex Machina then I'm not surprised you didn't like this. Ex and Annihilation are both considerably better than 28 Days. I don't think you understand what pseudoscience means https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudoscience

I don't understand your point. Not all films are based on books, sometimes someone writes an original screenplay, which is what Garland did with 28 Days Later. vapdne wrote:If you didn't like Ex Machina then I'm not surprised you didn't like this. Ex and Annihilation are both considerably better than 28 Days.
That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I prefered 28 Days Later. And I think that was a very condescending comment. I know what it means, thank you. And when I need to look up the definition of a word I certainly wouldn't use Wikipedia! Pseudo-science is a theory that is not formed in a scientific way. I used the term in a very loose sense when I was talking about Devs. To me the science was very flaky. We are supposed to believe that everything that's ever happened throughout time is somehow recorded somewhere and can be played back, from multiple angles? Eh? Or did I miss where they explained what their super-computer had managed to do?

Yes, you've missed it. ▼Spoiler The premise of the show is that everything happens on tram lines. You do C now because of B, which was a result of A. Since A was A (and not KSZUW82), B had to happen, and thus your action, C, was a direct result of it. You didn't have a choice. I don't claim I understood 100% of every facet, but the way I understood it is that DEVS is able to compute everything not only forwards (predicting the future), but also backwards: what was the B that had to happen/ had to be present in order for C to happen, and what was the only A possible to get B as a result? Radical stuff. I did stumble over the 'multiple angles' thing myself. I think it's not that big of a deal... if it's able to correctly compute A -> B -> C for people, adding some angles is child's play.
