Topic: Mr. Robot

There's just a very old thread at https://forum.next-episode.net/viewtopic.php?id=8936 so I decided to start a new one.

https://next-episode.net/mr.-robot/
Watchlists: 46862

This is a drama about a young programmer, Elliot, who suffers from a debilitating anti-social disorder and decides he can only connect to people by hacking them. Elliot finds himself in the intersection between a cybersecurity firm he works for, his hacking exploits at night, and the underworld hacking organization trying to recruit him to help bring down the 1 percent.

It's a great show with a current 8.5/10 IMDb rating.

The episode I enjoyed most is S03E05 aka eps3.4_runtime-error.r00, which (almost) is a one shot episode (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_shot_(film) ), so good! smile

The show features probably the most realistic coding/ hacking details of all TV shows or movies out there, and shortly after each episode I would read Corey Nachreiner's comments at https://www.geekwire.com/tag/mr-robot/ to see what I had missed/ what additional background Corey had.

Great trailer, and pause it at https://youtu.be/fmaNaD8LSX8?t=5 - isn't that one of the greatest stills of all trailers ever? big_smile

Looks like it will be an awesome final season! smile (Even if judging by the number of replies, I'm the only one looking forward to it. cool)

Re: Mr. Robot

I really liked season 1 of Mr. Robot and then lost interest during season 2.

From yay to meh and felt like a shore to watch, dropped it and never looked back.

Agreed, 1 was great, 2 was just awful.

Re: Mr. Robot

Sorry to hear it felt like a chore to you. It's on 47170 watchlists now with a very good 8.5 IMDb rating. smile

I would like to hear from someone who also enjoys the show but has little interest in the coding/ hacking details. Based on the IMDb rating there have to be such people! smile

It's not your fault (this time), everyone has different tastes.

Absolutely!! It's a show that's visceral with some of the best-framed shots seen on television. Superb sound work, interesting characters, great world-building, and the show's portrayal of cybersecurity and real-world systems penetration is breathtakingly accurate. The main selling point of Mr. Robot is that it delivers a believable portrait of the world of hacking, so IMO there has to be some interest in the subject matter to enjoy this series to the fullest. I give a lot of credit to director Sam Esmail, staff writer and technology producer Kor Adana, and professional consultants Marc Rogers, Ryan Kazanciyan, Andre McGregor and Michael Bazzell, for their efforts of making the show accurate so that even the most sophisticated hacker or technical person out there will not roll their eyes at a scene.

If this show doesn't grab you within the first 15 mins, then it's not for you. The opening to eps1.0_hellofriend.mov is without a doubt one of the best hooks to any show I've ever seen; third only to Battlestar Galactica "33" and Lost "Pilot". I do have to admit that I'm not the type that waits to watch each episode of Mr. Robot week after week. I get a better experience waiting for the season to end so that I can binge it later. As for the people out there who aren't interested in the subject matter, I would say it's still enjoyable solely for the twists and turns, characters, world-building, and unreliable narrative (which makes the show so exciting). At least that's what a few of my friends tell me. wink

IMO, 1 is legendary, 2 is decent, and 3 is a masterpiece.

Yeah, it's wonderful how it all fits together nicely.

Yes! I 'hate' it when people/hackers just randomly move their fingers over a keyboard in a scene and then miracles happen. wink I love it when some hacking tool is used that I've read about somewhere.

Interesting... I only really recall the Lost pilot (the most expensive pilot ever, at least back then)... maybe I have to watch the other two again. smile

Wow, 4x1 was great! Quite a suprise on the lawn, and...

Mr. Robot always starts out delivering quality jabs and hooks. I have zero doubts that this season will be great. big_smile

Totally! I've watched Phillip Price and Angela Moss: You've Been Conned (All the season 3 finale scenes from Angela and Philip played fluently in order) yesterday. I had already forgotten some of the nuances since the season 3 finale, now the 4x1 beginning was even better! (And probably the most seamless TV show season-to-season continuation of all times! smile)

I've also noticed I'd watched the 4x1 beginning with not enough volume the first time - I had missed Angela hearing the door open (while on the lawn). She saw what was coming...

Just watched 4x2. Damn, another sick intro! smile

(And it made me rewatch the 4x1 ending... I had stopped it when the end credits started, and it turned out there was more this time. cool)

Cool episode - and the subway snowman was quite a surprise - well done! big_smile

Spoiler

I really thought they'd find something cool in mom's bank deposit safe... sad

Re: Mr. Robot

4x4 wasn't one of the best episodes IMHO (not enough forward motion and too predictable), but Dominique 'Dom' DiPierro's dream! Damn! big_smile

And the ending - what a cliffhanger! smile

Re: Mr. Robot

No dialogue in 4x5... Very clever, it can't be an easy thing to do, write an episode with no speaking.

The only other time I've seen this done with real style was the Buffy episode "Hush".

2020.  Meh.

21

Re: Mr. Robot

Thanks, graybags, for ruining my surprise. tongue Ah well, still looking forward to 4x5.

The Walking Dead: Red Machete was similar - just 3 words spoken (but only 15 minutes long).

Ha ha... It wasn't much of a spoiler, let me know what you think of it when you've seen it.

2020.  Meh.

23

Re: Mr. Robot

Ok, I've finally watched 4x5. Very good episode! And one of their most suspenseful episodes. And an interesting use of xmas songs and text-based communication instead of talking. smile

Spoiler

Elliot successfully running away from the cops was - while not entirely impossible (after all, they have to carry their heavy gear) - quite unlikely though, given that he's a nerd who's never seen doing any exercise. cool

"The fourth and final season premiered on October 6, 2019, and will consist of 13 episodes."
