Topic: Better overview over cancelled shows
Figuring out which of your shows have been canceled recently still seems somewhat inconvenient. The best way I could come up with was going to "Watchlist", filtering by status "inactive" and ordering by "recent episode". That system, however, is still inconvenient because if a show that has not had any episodes in a long time (e. g. Sherlock - two years now, no solid information on anything, still marked as active) would then be officially canceled, you'd still have to scroll through most of your list of cancelled shows to find out whether there is anything new on it. We have forum posts for this, which is nice of those making them, but also kind of inconvenient to keep track of as well as to make in the first place. As I understand it, the show information this page uses is copied from third party databases, but not directly forwarded. Would it therefore be possible to have a "recently changed status" view, maybe as a queue with "okay, acknowledged" buttons? This might even be helpful for shows that get revived, or leave "in development". Going even further, would it be a possibility to integrate data from sites that explicitly track cancellation status into the site like that?

Hmmm... not sure I understand, what exactly would be the purpose of having such a list? (I've never missed it.) You can get email notifications when a show is canceled, and you can look up individual shows when you are not sure.

I did not know and did not find that feature before. Email notifications are a thing I and many other people do not really use for that kind of stuff anymore. While it may be still in use without alternative for official communication and account activations, it really is not the most convenient way to do anything otherwise and only spams your inbox. There does, however, seem to be the option to get site notifications for this already as well. In that case, I guess, my request would only be a more prominently available way to see this, maybe separate to the site's inbox. lighton wrote:Hmmm... not sure I understand, what exactly would be the purpose of having such a list? The use case would be to, if you are watching a lot of active shows at a time (as many here AFAIK do), keep track more easily of how many of the shows you actually watch did not survive the most recent cancellation season. Personally, I have somewhere ~12 shows that have ended or are on their last season this year alone. It often takes a few minutes to figure out whether there is anything new on that list.

Sounds like an opportunity for santah to improve the onboarding/feature-discovery process. some_one wrote:Email notifications are a thing I and many other people do not really use for that kind of stuff anymore. While we wait for a reply from santah... maybe https://next-episode.net/track would be useful for you? You could mark everything you've already watched as watched, then the list would contain only what's left over for you to watch, be it a current or a canceled show. By using the notifications you will have already learned which ones are canceled. Also, your canceled shows show up under "More (inactive shows)" on the left side of the main page. You will have to scroll down if you have a lot of shows.

That is quite an essential part of the features this site offers and I am of course using it. This is not about seeing what shows have new episodes but about seeing which ones not to expect new episodes from anymore. lighton wrote:Also, your canceled shows show up under "More (inactive shows)" on the left side of the main page. That is how I used to do it originally. The problem is that I have, as of right now, 50 inactive shows on my list. Removing them would interfere with recommendations/show discovery. It takes a while to read through that list and try to figure out which ones are new. The "Watchlist" tab, used as I described in OP, is a slightly more convenient way to do it, but still problematic.

Ok, so in the future, the notifications will take care of the "seeing which ones not to expect new episodes from anymore" issue?

Presumably so. Still, this feature should IMO not be hidden away in the site settings like that, and it might even serve as a main feature on its own instead of merely being awkwardly stashed into general-purpose notifications.

Yeah, it took me a while too to discover all the features the site offers... maybe a future onboarding/feature-discovery process will at least help users discover more of those more quickly.

Yeah, I see how it may be kinda hard to find. Btw if those notifications are not prominent enough for you - you can also install the mobile app and turn the "cancelled/resurrected" notification on so you get those on your phone as well ... Cheers!

Re: Better overview over cancelled shows
There is a goto website for me and that site is "http://www.ismyshowcancelled.com/home/". anyway is there a way to add this link to "Next-episode" site somewhere perhaps.

It doesn't look like they offer a search link that could be used like http://www.ismyshowcancelled.com/shows/search?xyz If you find one, you could use with with this site's "Search Engines" feature, see https://forum.next-episode.net/viewtopic.php?id=9775

The current prominence of site notifications is fine. There may be a bit of a disconnect between expected and actual user experience here - or maybe it's just me. I highly doubt that anybody needs those notifications that badly. There is IMO no real reason for notifications about status changes to be a thing that reaches you immediately. We are, after all, still just talking about TV shows. The information should not be something that reaches you once it becomes available. It should be readily available once you visit the site to check on it. Mixing it into the regular site notifications seems fine, but also like kind of a hacky solution. What I propose is to have a regular menu tab on the site for this, a bit like /track serves for episodes aired/watched. Perhaps this may be an obscure use case, but I do think otherwise. It would be nice to get some other opinions on this. santah wrote:Yeah, I see how it may be kinda hard to find.
It might, again, just be my opinion, but: If you only put traces of a feature under profile settings, you might as well just not include it at all. Who ever goes there unless looking for a way to turn something off or extremely bored?

Well, I prefer to get an email once the site learns about a cancellation instead of having to look for that information. It's great to be able to look for that again if needed (i.e., http://next-episode.net/elementary -> "Ah yes, no more episodes"), but I don't need or want a special category just for cancellations. some_one wrote:santah wrote:Yeah, I see how it may be kinda hard to find.

Sooner or later I tend to explore what's possible - I'm curious - but I agree insofar that that feature might be hidden a bit too well for the average user. @santah: can you say what percentage of users with a Premium Membership has made changes to https://next-episode.net/settings?action=notifications ? Probably a higher percentage than users with a free account?

I hear you. The thing is: 1. We don't really keep track of the dates when status has changed. This can be upgraded but: 2. This information wouldn't be super reliable (as information about what has been cancelled and/or ressurected often is). 3. I don't really think this would be used much. You obviously feel the need for it, but I don't think many other people will. It might, again, just be my opinion, but: If you only put traces of a feature under profile settings, you might as well just not include it at all. While I somewhat agree, I can't really see where settings can be put other than the "settings" section of the website.

Oh, no, I do not feel the need for it. The current notification system should do the job well enough ( - it did not fire for me yet but I don't really want to hope for an opportunity to verify it). But when I look at this, I see a feature that aligns itself pretty damn well with how I, and judging by those 60% presumably also many other people use the site. Making it a proper feature might add to the fairly well-rounded impression this site currently leaves, and might in some cases more easily add to the incentives to actually go premium. Additionally, judging by what you said so far about the technical aspects, it should even be somewhat simple to implement. Just dump, whenever a status changes and the notification process is triggered, an entry for it in some database table, then add a simple page that merely filters that table for the user's shows and displays the results... If you still think this would not be worth it, santah wrote:While I somewhat agree, I can't really see where settings can be put other than the "settings" section of the website.
Easy, they wouldn't even have to be moved out of the settings page. You could simply add a little "get notified" button/link (bell icon, maybe?) to the "Status" field of show pages that would send users to the settings page. This would make for basic, non-invasive advertisement of a feature in a place where mostly people who might be interested in it would see it. Also, side note:
santah wrote:1. We don't really keep track of the dates when status has changed. This can be upgraded but: 2. This information wouldn't be super reliable (as information about what has been cancelled and/or ressurected often is).
It does not have to be 100% accurate. We still have other sites for that, the one that @Ameriplan linked being just one example. But having the information here eventually, associated with our actual watchlists, could, IMO, go a long way.

I did not think you could link each show to "http://www.ismyshowcancelled.com/home/" but just place a link to the website homepage somewhere.

TBH, that site doesn't look very trustworthy, I'm seeing some questionable ads there. Also, you don't need to put links into "".

Weird, my adblockers showed me the ads there. Today they don't. I didn't say santah said "never add quotation marks to links" - I was just pointing out that your extra work is not required (and you're not quoting anybody).

Re: Better overview over cancelled shows
I remember that in one program I was using years ago that all links required quotation marks and it just became a habit of mine and since I am so old (older than dirt) that habit will never change.......
