Re: Random Stuff
I'm watching this show about a danish farmer. He bought ducks to eat the snails, but they flew away. But he seems happy anyway. He has lots of plants and tools and stuff. Lately I've been growing some monsteras and an ivy plant that's taking over a window. Also, a coleus. Plants are pretty neat, don't you think?

Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and gods, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the gods themselves.

Re: Random Stuff
I don't, but the damn Windows Update does it for me Normally I hibernate at best, if I don't have terminals or alike open. But mostly it's because I have constantly a lot of stuff running and it's a chore to start it back again. Some VM's which I need just for specific things are scheduled to shut down in the middle of the night. Tho it's not free, I guess it costs around 15 eur/month to keep running 2 PC's 24/7. Or 180 eur/year. Restart again retarded Windows Update or some driver updates. At least AVG gets it, in their dialog when to restart the computer the last option is "Next century" My Debian machines are restarted... never.

This is exactly why I use Sledgehammer (formerly WUMT Wrapper Script), along with WuMgr, to put a stop to those automatic updates. If Windows gets updated it's because I pulled the trigger and scheduled a restart if needed. g371 wrote:Tho it's not free, I guess it costs around 15 eur/month to keep running 2 PC's 24/7. I no longer need it at my current residence but Winsleep came in handy for me in the past to help cut costs. g371 wrote:My Debian machines are restarted... never.
Yeah, same here. The only times they're off is during routine maintenance and cleaning. And before anyone tries to be funny, NO, I don't take a sledge hammer to my PC or blast Peter Gabriel over the speakers to stop the updates.

+1! I use a script to automate at least some of the 'starting stuff back again'. g371 wrote:At least AVG gets it, in their dialog when to restart the computer the last option is "Next century"
Love it!

I have 2 problems why I don't restart or shut down computers: 1) I use Windows notepad for quick temp notes, like some configs/passwords I set and alike, these get lost on restart; 2) I use 5 virtual desktops and even Chrome update pisses me off, because after I again need to drag 30 windows to correct desktops - have not found a solution for that. Instead of restart I have a useless_process_killer.bat @echo off

Will need to check that, for a while it was ok, you could tell Windows Update to stand down, but it's Microsoft, after some major update, they reset config or something like that and, bam, surprise restarts are back, last one yesterday It's like Windows Update team competes with Internet Explorer team who will get the most hate in MS history The day Linux will be able to cover my desktop needs, bye, bye

I don't mind much anymore... Windows 10 with Chrome (with many tabs open) tends to get close to running out of RAM after 4 to 8 days, so a reboot helps to clean house and return to 100% system performance. (At least Windows now waits at least a day or two before the auto-reboot.) Linux probably does that better.

Re: Random Stuff
That's cool, and I agree, a reboot every now and then is a good thing. I just don't like giving Windows too much control with the updates. I have backup solutions in place, so even if Microsoft borked an update, I can always roll back. Would hate to be like so many people I see on Reddit complaining about BSOD's, bricked devices, broken wifi, deleted user files, etc, because they wanted to grab the new feature updates the same day they're released. That's why I follow AskWoody and SusanBradley@PatchManagement. Atleast now with the 1903 update you can opt-out of those feature updates, temporarily, and focus on the security patches. I haven't tried it yet though; my Win machines are currently on 1809. BTW, I know Chrome can be a resource hog, but how many Chrome tabs do you keep open during that stretch?

Re: Random Stuff
Yeah, I have backups of all important files, but it would still suck if my Windows installation went belly-up after an update... scorpius074 wrote:BTW, I know Chrome can be a resource hog, but how many Chrome tabs do you keep open during that stretch?
About 100, but at least half of those put to sleep with The Great Suspender (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta … nakg?hl=de), which is a great extension.

Chrome RAM hoarding I'm solving with 24 Gb of RAM and The Great Suspender extension: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta … cebajanakg

Btw, that Great Suspender extension is even more valuable for javascript heavy sites, which are hogging CPU in the background

Well, I have 24,000,000 GB RAM, a couple of zettabyte HDD's, a GPU that has Nvidia and AMD joining forces, a couple of processors that Intel keeps begging me for, and my wifi spans the globe. Free wifi for everyone! My SSID is scorpius074, and my password is IDon'tHave1.

Re: Random Stuff
I bet non-English speaking people pronounce it randomly both ways. One time was talking with one guy and after 3 minutes realized that the strange sound that comes from his mouth means "SQL"
