Re: The Orville

Well, it was no Kobayashi Maru but I'll take it. tongue

If you're a fan of sci-fi, consider yourself fortunate to have two quality space opera shows that come on the same day, back-to-back. Especially in today's climate. Star Trek: Discovery & The Orville. It almost feels like two gladiators, going toe-to-toe, in the ring throwing nothing but haymakers, and connecting with devastating force. Trying to flatten their opponent by seeing which one can dazzle us with the best episode each week. Personally, The Orville has provided me with a little more Oomph!, but Discovery is gaining, and has had a couple wins go their way this seasons. And the best outcome of all is that, as fans of the genre, all we have to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy the spectacle. smile

Yeah, DS9 was known for its badass battle sequences. "Sacrifice of Angels" happens to be one of my favorites. The Dominion War Saga has a lot of battle sequences too, though some of them have been reused in later season episodes. Add to that the battles in "Way of the Warrior", "The Die is Cast", and "The Changing Face of Evil", and you have a combo that would be tough to beat. There were also a few Voyager and TNG episodes with good space battles. Can't forget about Nemesis, if you want to include the movies. There was A LOT going on within a small time frame towards the end, and that's what made the 2x09 battle so intense. You also have to consider what was at stake. Plus, top notch CGI and effects are always welcomed. The two-parter could have easily served as the season finale. Kind of scary to think of all the great things to come, with five more episodes to go in the season. Once you finish DS9, revisit this thread and let us know what you think.

That's what i heard about DS9 aswell. I'm rewatching Voyager at the moment  (very slowly tho with all the other shows i'm following) but DS9 is on my to watchlist aswell.

2x14 The Road Not Taken

Aeron wrote:

THIS is how you slowly build up your characters and world to a satisfying payoff. If you have an entire episode that takes place outside of the main universe and put all the main characters into completely different roles yet still manages to retain the core of the show and give viewers enough familiarity to hold onto, then you really do know how to write. Even if the series ends here, what a brilliant, intelligent, and enjoyable adventure The Orville is. Anyone still out there who looks at this show and thinks "Family Guy in space" is in crippling denial. This show is reaching Stargate levels of storytelling and character development now. What started as a chance foot in the door, to get the fleeting chance to stand in the shadows of science fiction giants has evolved into something that actually has the potential to be one of those giants some day.

For this episode in particular, what a delightful blend of TOS movie and Star Wars musical cues, the new ships and places that are a departure from the typical Union aesthetic, and the very best special effects I've seen on this show so far. Effects that are very detailed and eye-popping while still allowing everything to be well-lit and easy to follow. A very bold and dramatic way to cap off a season, especially the second season, and a very enigmatic ending that deliberately left threads hanging while still being satisfying and positive.

THIS show is the hopeful vision of the future we need right now. Not something that just reflects back what we currently are (because, let's face it, what we currently are is embarrassing), but one that shows up what we could be if we could stop resenting ourselves and each other for five freaking minutes. We'll always have our precious mistakes, our warts, our weirdness, but it's wrong to let those things define us. In the past, this kind of love and awareness came from a different show. A show that has sadly decided to move away from the wisdom of the human adventure. Now, thankfully, it's coming from this one. Hopefully, for a long time to come.

So happy when I saw this! I wish seasons had more episodes but I'd hate to sacrifice quality for quantity.

Nice! I expected nothing less. smile

Re: The Orville

Sweet. There were already some hints it was renewed, but an official confirmation is always better.

Re: The Orville

yikes

The Orville TV show will return for a third season but a few important details have changed. It was previously announced that season three of the space series would launch on FOX during the second half of the 2019-20 season. At Comic Con, it was revealed that the show is moving over to Hulu as an exclusive series for the streaming service. What’s more, season three won’t be released until late 2020, many months later than expected.
