Re: The Orville

I had to laugh 2 times in the latest episode 1x07 and that in a sci-fi/Star Trek like show, which is a good thing in my book.
The Orville is for me one of the best new stuff on TV at the moment, looking forward to every new episode.

Re: The Orville

Well there were definitely similarities to 'Nosedive,' but Seth went on record saying that he wrote 'Majority Rule' well before the Black Mirror episode and was actually inspired by the Jon Ronson book So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed. They did miss some key character development opportunities imo, but made some other interesting observations along the way. Decent episode either way in my book too.

Re: The Orville

It was a good episode (concept-wise). Liking the direction they're taking this show (explore other worlds week-to-week with alien rulesets). It's real sci-fi.

Reminded me very much of Black Mirror 3x1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nosedive

Re: The Orville

LOVING this series!!!! big_smile

Re: The Orville

Y'Know, this is hard to call...

I'm dying to see the next Orville but then after I watch that I can't wait until Discovery

As someone mentioned in this thread (or the other on this)

Bloody cool to have two superb shows on at the same time...

If you're a DISCO fan and not Orville - fine by me, the other way around works equally

I love both so I'm a very happy puppy

For those of you who don't like the other one, give them a chance and watch all the eps

The only way shows stay on air is to have viewers (both series have good viewing numbers - DISCO is implied by the pick-up)

Good news indeed! Make that 2 good sci-fi/star trek series to look forward to next season.

I'm saving Discovery for a binge big_smile  ....and as a fan I'm pretty sure i'm in for a nice ride (I even enjoyed the last Enterprise so I'm not that hard to please smile )

Re: The Orville

@he3tic

There's a mid-season break in to weeks for DISCO - I'm sure we're in for a cliff-hanger until it resumes in mid Jan so suggest you binge it before the new stuff (there's bound to be a cliff-hanger end of season)

Orville is far easier to watch as its episodic. I checked out Rotten Tomatoes today as Orville has terrible ratings. At the time of writing the critics have it at 18% while the audience have it at 93%

Something I read the other day (can't remember where) - what's the point of a critic if they get it that badly wrong?

And, yep. Ent I liked as well. Slow at the start - picked up hugely at the end.

Eek - this one should be in the DISCO channel to discuss properly...

I made similar arguments in both threads

Only @Orlando seems confused by the new state of SciFi

Can we kindly keep the discussions to their relative threads in the future?

I know I'm responsible for the mixing of chat but there's also a Discovery vs Orville (proper place for this stuff)

Re: The Orville

Right - Orville only

This week was pretty much a TNG away mission only with little main cast

These are usually fillers so they have budget for the next eps / end of season so I guess Orville will get better and better

As it's been renewed (we don't know how many for) I have hopes that Orville becomes the new TNG

I'm very happy with the series - we want more decent SciFi and we're been rewarded well

Seth McFarlene is, apparently, a real Star Trek nerd - good on him

Re: The Orville

Call it a filler but to me this week's episode felt so much like a true installment of the original inspiration. "Into The Fold" was IMHO one of the top three Orville episodes so far this season. The overall story was quite interesting as it was entertaining, Seth was anemic with the jokes (that's a good thing btw), the overall humor was spot on as the story called for it, the bulk of the action in this episode was eminently believable and well-presented, and Isaac was MVP for a second time this season (in many ways Isaac is the star of the series). Oh, and speaking of MVP's, last week's missed character development opportunities definitely flourished this week x2. Claire herself didn’t necessarily grow as a character as much as Isaac did, but it was quite enjoyable to see her interactions with her family as a way of humanizing her. I think we all got a sense of who the doctor is and how she views life on the ship

+ show spoiler

Not to mention, Claire also verified one thing this week: they’re using translators to understand alien languages. We all sort of knew that, but it was nice to hear her say it nonetheless.

"Your children are unruly, disrespectful, volatile, and highly unpredictable. I am quite fond of them." wink

The job of a critic (in any field) is not to predict what is and isn't popular.

McDonalds is one of the planet's most popular places to eat - you won't find a critic recommending it. An extreme example, I know, but the point is the same. I watch, and thoroughly enjoy, trash TV on a regular basis, and The Orville, like Star Trek TOS before it, whilst enjoyable, is trash TV.

A show that's enjoyable is not trash TV. And failing to appreciate something that's enjoyable for most people while calling themselves a critic just might mean their idea of what is good and what is not good is broken, and they should probably shut up :3

No, an enjoyable TV show is not necessarily trash TV, but at the same time a popular TV show isn't necessarily a critically acclaimed TV show. Telling critics to "shut up" because they don't praise shows you enjoy to the heavens just shows that you have no comprehension of what TV critics do...

I can tell you right now what TV critics do - TV critics get paid for eloquently smacktalking most of the time.

Maybe this is just a show you don't "get". It certainly is not trash TV and if you reply here again to me you're going to need to write a good list of the flaws this show has that qualifies it for the "trash TV" title :3 Then maybe we'll see why you seem to have such a strong opinion about it.

Hmm..now I'm torn between watching half of first season(I'm REALY eager to get started) or wait until the enitre season ends..next year...I dont particulary like HUGE cliffhangers either... I very much like the feeling I get when they do that and I can simply jump to the next episode (that would normally be a long wait).

Damn...I have to sleep on it big_smile

Re: The Orville

I'm still waiting on Discovery.  I heard it started poorly but has gotten better.  It's not a show I need to watch so I'll wait a few seasons and then binge it.  The Orville, however, I watch every single week.  I usually find Seth irritating but he really has toned down the annoying factor in the show.  For me at least.

Also, for those of you who are arguing, please remember, you have two good shows to watch.  No need for the fussin' and a fuedin'.

Yeah, it's annoying

Looking on the bright side we're assured of S2

Same stuff happening with DISCO

Of course, "The Doctor" vs. Phlox. smile

You couldn't script it any better. Speaking of which, this episode is without a doubt top shelf material! Not only is this the best episode so far this season, but it's probably the best of the entire series, which is saying a lot. I hate to see Alara go, and I guess the rumors were true after all (nothing official as of yet), but man, you can not top that ending with the jar of pickles. Genius!!

Now all I need is for Gates McFadden or Alexander Siddig to grace us with their appearances so I can die blissfully. big_smile
