Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

i really liked travellers season 3. Just finished it. It's definitely one of the different kind of scifi shows where the scifi is more in the background of the characters.

"city morgue, you kill em, we chill em"

Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

Just to give you the best and the worst this year:
Best: The Man in the High Castle
Worst: Altered Carbon

Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

Travelers.
This show is getting better with each season.
Third one is pure art.

Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

I've heard nothing but great things about Travelers, which is why I mentioned it earlier in such high regards. I may have to readjust my selections before the year is out. I'll know soon enough. And to think that I have three full seasons to binge, up next in my queue. I get goosebumps just thinking about it. big_smile

No it isn't, Nightflyers is just a very poor ripoff of 2001 Space Odyssey.

Wrong!! You mean 2001: A Space Shining with the malevolent computer represented by a glowing red eye screaming "Here's Johnny" (or was that Rowan), Hallorann flying the 2093 Plymouth Fury, the lifeboat named RedRum, and Olive Oyl with super-psychic abilities. tongue

The malevolent computer is represented by a glowing eye, like in 2001. The "acid trip" from the ending of Space Odyssey is just spliced throughout the series (the super-psychic abilities). Volcryn is the monolith and the Star Gate. The lifeboat is the EVA pod. D'Bran is Bowman. The hominids were the crazies from Eagle16. Nightflyer is Discovery One. Jupiter is Jupiter. "Bowman's bedroom" is D'Bran's home... etc etc... I do give that Rowan is obviously Jack, but there the similarities with the Shining ends.

PS. Then again, if your gonna ripoff someone, why not ripoff the best. Kubrick was a genius.

Yeah, Kubrick was a genius which is why you have to laugh at these comparisons and not take them too seriously. I doubt he's rolling in his grave. Thank goodness he turned down directing The Exorcist; otherwise, I guess that would've also been mentioned. It's an insult to Kubrick and his work more than anything else and is more comparable to a terrible parody. And we're not alone because if you Google any of those films along with Nightflyers, you'll get several hits. What are on earth were we thinking? Please accept our apologies, Mr. Kubrick. smile

When shows like this aren’t capable of knocking you flat on your face with style, they’d better have vivid characters and a riveting story to fall back on, and, unfortunately, that wasn't the case here. However, IMO the show did have some pretty good aesthetics and intriguing character concepts. There were also some decent performances, and I thought the show's take on the nature of perception and reality was interesting. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to keep it afloat and in hindsight, impossible to regain those seven hours of my life back.

Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

Nightflyers was truly awful. Just dumb all round. I'd also like to nominate another show for worst sci fi? (was it a sci fi? was more like Neighbours with drugs and mermaids) of the year - Tidelands. Avoid at all costs!

Seen a few people mention this, will go check it out. I'd never even heard of it till I read this thread.

Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

These are what I curently have set on my watchlist. It could be argued that Mars is semi factual rather than fiction, but it is set in the 2040s...so you can make you own mind up on that, I enjoy it anyway.

MARS
Marvel's Runaways
Titans
The Gifted
Star Trek: Discovery
Altered Carbon
Krypton
Lost in Space (2018)
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Marvel's Cloak and Dagger
Marvel's The Punisher
The Expanse
Westworld

And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes....

Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

My list, sorted roughly from "awesome" to "good enough to watch":

The Expanse
Star Trek: Discovery
Altered Carbon
Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Lost in Space
Counterpart
Westworld
The Orville
Titans
The Gifted
Nightflyers

The Magicians is listed as scifi too and S03 was really, really good! It's 'less scifi' than the above list though, but was one of my fav shows this year.

Preacher was great too, but it's not scifi... but given how f*cked up it is now I wouldn't be suprised if they add scifi next season... big_smile

Favorite Sci-Fi Shows (2017-18)

The Expanse
Counterpart
Black Mirror
The Orville
Travelers
Altered Carbon
Lost In Space (2018)
DARK

Honorable Mentions: Killjoys, Dark Matter (prematurely ended), 12 Monkeys, Colony, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams, The Crossing, Westworld, Mars, Humans, Star Trek: Discovery, Star Wars Rebels, Timeless, Hard Sun, The 100, The X-Files

Can I Have Some Sci-fi To Go Along With Those Fries: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Action/Adventure/Superhero Fiction), Legion (Drama/Psychological Thriller/Superhero Fiction), Krypton (Action, Drama, Superhero Fiction), Stranger Things (Supernatural/Horror/Fantasy/Period Drama), Fortitude (Drama/Mystery/Horror/Psychological Thriller), Outlander (Drama/Adventure/Fantasy/Romance/Historical Fiction), The Handmaid's Tale (Drama/Dystopian Fiction) -- Those are just a few of my mixed breed favs, that I consider to be under the umbrella genre of speculative fiction, and I basically wanted to keep my first two lists, for the most part, insulated within the realm of sci-fi.

Anticipated Debuts: Consider Phlebas (Amazon), LOTR (Amazon), Another Life (Netflix), Watchmen (HBO), Aeon Flux (2019), Amazing Stories (2018), Away (Netflix), Star Wars: Underworld, The Nevers (HBO), The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Netflix), Galaxy Quest (finally!!)

Seeing how we're only in Q2 of 2018, my selections are subject to change.

I noticed you were the only one who mentioned Humans, albeit in your Honorable Mentions - You hear anything about another Season dropping ?

adhere to the golden rule of quoting: don’t full quote to the extent possible but shorten to relevant citations, readers will thank you.

cool

http://www.cancelledscifi.com/sci-fi-tv-shows/humans/ says:

This show’s numbers have been down in its third season, and AMC kicked the show out of Prime Time to the 11 PM hour; never a good sign. Its fate is more closely tied to how it is performing in Britain on Channel 4, however, its numbers are down over there as well according to Wikipedia. I have moved it to Bubble status and will keep it there until we hear final word on its fate.

Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

There are no fresh sci-fi shows on my list, just waiting the next seasons of Altered Carbon, Impulse, Manifest, Westworld and The Rain S02 just came out.

Btw The Rain is not categorized here under Sci-Fi:

Yeah, waiting for Altered Carbon too! smile Lot's of potential... curious to see where they go with the story and characters.

Re: What is everyone's favorite scifi this year?

I'm waiting for Altered Carbon aswell, but am afraid that it won't be the same without Joel Kinnaman.

Like it was mentioned earlier, Channel 4 and AMC have yet to order a fourth season of Humans officially. I'm not feeling very optimistic unless Channel 4 in the UK wants to keep it going. That would most likely make it cheap enough for AMC to get on board; clearly, the ratings aren’t incentive enough. It will be most unfortunate if it does indeed get canceled since it closed its stellar third season with a whole string of game-changing scenarios, affirming that a follow-up season would bring us a radically different show. In any event, whatever news lands in my inbox regarding its season four status will be posted in the forum topic.

Copy all that. Yeah would be a shame, but par for the course as far as entertaining shows getting cancelled, goes. Another one Bites the Dust (probably) , as they say..
